Then it was institutionalized in Tabernacle and later the Temple.
Jesus was final sacrifice. - Curtain in Temple ripped from top to bottom.
READ
So he delivered him over to them to be crucified.
So they took Jesus, and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them. Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” Many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek. So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but rather, ‘This man said, I am King of the Jews.’ ” Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.”
When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic. But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom, so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” This was to fulfill the Scripture which says,
“They divided my garments among them,
and for my clothing they cast lots.”
So the soldiers did these things, but standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.

6 Realities of the Cross
The Cross Was Jesus’ Burden (16b-17)
The Cross Was Jesus’ Burden (16b-17)
“bore his own cross”
Doesn’t invalidate other Gospels concerning Simon of Cyrene.
John is making a theological point- It was his own cross. Don’t take the stories about Simon wrong. Jesus is only one who could carry that cross.
He had to be cursed in our place.
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”—
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”—
“And if a man has committed a crime punishable by death and he is put to death, and you hang him on a tree, 23 his body shall not remain all night on the tree, but you shall bury him the same day, for a hanged man is cursed by God. You shall not defile your land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance.
“And if a man has committed a crime punishable by death and he is put to death, and you hang him on a tree, his body shall not remain all night on the tree, but you shall bury him the same day, for a hanged man is cursed by God. You shall not defile your land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance.
We also should carry our cross.
It is a reference to complete surrender and death of self.
“If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. 27 Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.
“If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.
I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

The Cross Brings Choice (18)
The Cross Brings Choice (18)
One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, “Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!” 40 But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41 And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.” 42 And he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” 43 And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
Everyone is one of these two men on the cross.
We are all worthy to be on the cross. One confesses faith in Jesus, the other did not. One dies and is with Jesus, the other continues to suffer.
For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
His salvation was not in works. He was a bad man who had no way to do anything good to make it up.
The Cross Was for the World (19-20)
The Cross Was for the World (19-20)
Jesus is Savior to the whole world- not just the Jews- Every chapter of John points this out.
The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

He is your Lord or he is not.
“Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? 47 Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. 49 But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.”

Jesus is my Lord!
Not because I say so but because I live it.
It is the foundation of my life.
Many say your a Christian but it is not the foundation of your life. It is added onto your life.

The Cross Ended Jesus’ Mission (25-27)
The Cross Ended Jesus’ Mission (25-27)
He would rise from the dead but his earthly responsibilities were over.
Jesus cared about the earthly situation of the two he cared about the most.
Mary- can you imagine the pain of seeing your son being tortured to death?
John- the disciple closest to Jesus.
Obedience is hard on those around us.
Believers need believers
Jesus’ brothers were not yet believers.
He was going to take over the spiritual responsibility at the right hand of His Father.
His earthly mission ended when he breathed his last, “It is finished”
For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit,

CONCLUSION
On that Day of Preparation for the Passover a Lamb was chosen and died.
Jesus was the Lamb. The final sacrifice.
We just need to accept that sacrifice by surrendering to the one who died and is now alive.
Have you surrendered to Jesus?
Have you surrendered to Jesus?
