Coaching Trees...
Two comtemporary....
Two contemporary....
Andy Reid. The man of the moment.
Bill Bilechick. Famous for giving his disciples lots of help (both college and professional)
Two most significant:
Sid Gilman/Philosophically=power run and vertical passing game.

Now let's transition this discussion to

DISCIPLESHIP!!!

Engage: In sport, if you don't win you lose your job. For some reason we have accepted the cultural assesment that since "religious faith" is just personal, since it is optional, and each makes his/her own way-there is no accountability. Needless to say Jesus did not define discipleship that way-He raises the bar a little higher.

Needless to say Jesus did not define discipleship that way-He raises the bar a little higher.
Expand: Jesus uses image and parable along with direct affirmation. We would use vocabulary like control and ask questions like "whose in charge?" That does not change the fact that the primary issue for discipleship is obediently following.
Excite: It's not easy. I am fully aware of the way it pinches particularly in a narcissistic culture which constantly strokes our ego and focuses on the individual.
Explore: The primary question for disciples is...

The primary question for disciples is...What must I do to give up control of my life's purpose to obediently Follow Jesus?

What must I do to give up control of my life's purpose to obediently Follow Jesus?

There are a lot…a lot of excuses or alternatives: I can’t believe this, or that. Theological, philosophical, conceptual, scientific…My examination of the subject is not scientific and it’s extensive if not exhaustive and I have concluded that the controlling factor is always obedience. For that evaluation I will not apologize and along with it this sermon will make clear that...
Explain: There is no secret sauce just a series of distinct, disciplined, choices.

Body of Sermon:

1. Reprioritize Our Connections

1. Reprioritize Our Connections
Luke 14:25–26 ESV
25 Now great crowds accompanied him, and he turned and said to them, 26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.

You can convene with the Crowd

You may keep company with the Curious.

Disciples are those who

Challenged

who are

Convinced,

and who

Change every connection.

2. Refocus Our Convictions

Luke 14:27 ESV
27 Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.
Christianity is unique in that there is this focus on an executed man, a wrongly convicted and maliciously executed man but executed nonetheless. And an unheard of focus on the instrument by which He was tortured and executed. That is the powerful image of the Cross. This is it's power, it's presence and it's looming significance...
so Jesus uses it as an instrument to evaluate our conviction so we focus on the...

Significance of the Cross

What had been an instrument of shame and torture becomes a mark of acceptance and allegiance.
And we come to understand the...

Sufficiency of the Cross

His saves me…mine defines me.
With our connections and convictions aligned then we are in a position to...

3. Reevaluate Our Commitments

Luke 14:28–35 ESV
28 For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? 29 Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, 30 saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’ 31 Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? 32 And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace. 33 So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple. 34 “Salt is good, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? 35 It is of no use either for the soil or for the manure pile. It is thrown away. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

Are you Focused enough to finish?

“He’ll never follow through…He’s not a finisher. Determination

Have You Counted the Cost?

…Looking before leaping…foresight

Are you "Salty Salt?"

Ability…effectiveness…

When Jesus....

Will you heed His voice? Will you make the right choice? Will you take up your cross and pledge to Him your allegiance…When Jesus comes to town?
