How do you know when the Lord is asking you to show love to someone?
-Your experience.......
Explanation
Jesus’ foundation for all he did was what God has already said/revealed to us in scripture
-Could have wowed people with knowledge about God that he had because of the kind of relationship he had with God......
-He engaged the man with a question....
-This is our foundation for life....what does it say and how do you understand what it says?
-Drawing out what the man already knew
-It’s interesting to see that the man who was testing Jesus knew the answer from what the law actually said, but really didn’t know the law as how he should live that out.
-After the initial question the tone changes and this guy got an answer to his question that he didn’t expect......
RIGHT DO THIS AND YOU WILL LIVE.....OR DO THIS AND IT WILL GIVE YOU LIFE TO YOUR LIVING!
-HE WANTED TO JUSTIFY HIMSELF......He wanted to make sure he was right in the eyes of the law and what he knew of his relationship with God.
When the law was given by Moses it was almost guaranteed that your neighbor was going to be probably a family member if not definitely an Israelite.
-Now the context Jesus is teaching in this guy that was not the way they lived any more.....so I can imagine as I was reading this the problem he was having in connecting what scripture said and how to live it out in his context.
In the story Jesus told
-Ive always heard this preached and the focus is the 2 guys who didn’t do anything to help.....
-I have been captured in my thinking this week by the Samaritan so he will be our foucs
What was the criteria for the Samaritan to start helping the man?
What was the criteria for helping the man who was beaten?
-He felt compassion....
-He saw the man and his heart was filled with love for him AND HE ACTED ON THAT COMPASSION.
The other 2 gentlemen
sometimes this comes from Empathy
Did you act on it?
What should we do?
What should we do?
1 Corinthians 13 NLT
If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn’t love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. If I had the gift of prophecy, and if I understood all of God’s secret plans and possessed all knowledge, and if I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn’t love others, I would be nothing. If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it; but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing. Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. Prophecy and speaking in unknown languages and special knowledge will become useless. But love will last forever! Now our knowledge is partial and incomplete, and even the gift of prophecy reveals only part of the whole picture! But when the time of perfection comes, these partial things will become useless. When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child. But when I grew up, I put away childish things. Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely. Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love.
1corinthians 13
When you see something that breaks your heart and hurts you to look at or think about what do you want to do?
Andy Stanley -” Do for one, what you wish you could do for everyone”
What if they what you do to help them wont last?
What if they waste the blessing you gave them?
What if they made bad life decisions that put them in the place they are now?
What if they would return to the streets after you help them get clean?
If God is breaking your heart for someone or something you see.......ACT ON IT IN LOVE!
When was the last time you saw something where you felt compassion for someone....where you were so compelled by your love for the person you saw?
Did you act on it?
