David and Goliath a closer look
If you have ever read the story of david and goliath you may have wondered why did saul not go out against Goliath he was the one that was better fitted he was taller older been proved in battle why was it not him that went out and brought the victory home for God’s people?
Why was it David the teenager the youth or the stripling?
the difference was how they viewed the battle.
Saul viewed it in the flesh it was up to him
David viewed it in the spirit it was up to God
Saul viewed it as a conflict between Israel and the philistines flesh versus flesh but David viewed it as a conflict between heaven and hell.
And whether or not you are able to face your problems the giants that pop up in your life will depend on your view of the battle.
Listen giants are always going to be popping up in our lives
9 foot tall problems with a 125 pounds of armour on them that seems impenetrable
Problems with a big spear that keep poking at you
Problems when you are already in a valley
Problems that mock your manhood or womanhood or mock your christianity
Problems that show up to mock you twice a day.
They are a constant source of irritation.
Problems that get you stuck
How you view the problems or how you view the battle is going to largely determine the outcome of the battle for you.
The reason Saul did not defeat the giant is he viewed him in a with a different set of eyes than David.
Let me ask you in your life in your battles do you look more like David or Saul?
Are you hiding behind people or are you carrying your problems head around the streets of Jerusalem.
do people see the head of your problem and get shocked at the Lord's Deliverance?
Dude check out his head man
Like in the country when they kill a deer strap it to the hood of the truck and drive around town with it. They do not really need to but it is just cool.
Have you took some of your problems to the taxidermy and mounted them?
He kept it as a symbol 17:54 jerusalem was still in the hands of the jebusites and when he captured it and made it the capital he brought Goliath's head there.
Do you have any of your giants stuffed and have their armour in your tent? And their head on the wall for all to see?
How many of you when it comes to the big giant problems in your life what used to be an obstacle has now become a source of encouragement?
This is not for self gratification but to energize the troops to get their own victory.
Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing: thou hast put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness;
To the end that my glory may sing praise to thee, and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give thanks unto thee for ever.
Obviously I do not think you are going to get in a fight with a nine foot tall man so the giant is a representative of something spiritual.
When I say the names of these problems do you feel more like saul or david? are you cowering or do you have this head on the wall?
Lust, how many people are kept in prison by this giant?
anger, how many peoples relationships are destroyed up by this giant
fear , how many people never accomplish what they were meant to accomplish because of this giant .
jealousy , how many people never enjoy what God gave them because of this giant
depression how many people can never enjoy God's creation and enjoy the good food they eat and the beautiful moments of life because of this giant
covetchesness, how many people are not thankful for the truly wonderful position they are in because of this giant
moderation how many people's lives are cut short because of this giant
People,
marriage ,
relationships,
health,
money , work, children.
Who will you end up at the end of the battle Saul or david?
It depends how you view the battle

He Failed to see the Battle for what it was 17:47

41 And the Philistine came on and drew near unto David; and the man that bare the shield went before him.
42 And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance.
43 And the Philistine said unto David, Am I a dog, that thou comest to me with staves? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.
44 And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field.
That is the same thing the Lord promises to do in rev 19 to the armies of the devil
This is a spiritual battle between heaven and hell
This is the devil trying to steal the victory and the promises that God has already given them
This land already belonged ot them God had given it to them but they faled to keep the land and the victory God had given them
This philistines were trying to take away something that was already the Israelites
17 Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle, and were gathered together at Shochoh, which belongeth to Judah, and pitched between Shochoh and Azekah, in Ephesdammim.
45 Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.
46 This day will the Lord deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.
47 And all this assembly shall know that the Lord saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the Lord's, and he will give you into our hands.
David saw the battle as spiritual
Not Saul
The battle is the Lords
It was not my life on the line not my reputation on the line
It was about the Lord it was his honor he was fighting for
Not for personal enrichment
When his brethren reproached him and accused him he did not get in an argument because that was not the battle. He said is there not a cause he kept it about the battle and not about a personal argument
He was not depending on his skill he was not depending on his size he was not depending on his weapons he was depending on the Lord.
Listen this battle your are facing it may seem physical but it is spiritual
All of these giants you are facing are used by the devil to get your mind off the Lord and onto yourself and your problem
No one in this army was thinking about the lord and his strength and his past miracles
They were thinking about goliath. Goliath's size his strength
We do that as well we look at how big our problem is
How powerful it is and we forget about the Lord
I was talking to my friend and he is dealing in his church with is relationship problems he is in charge of a small group and he has people come to him and they say I do not want to work with him because even though he is good at what he does and he is reliable and he cares, I do not like the way he speaks to me. And he says would you be willing to talk to them and have a conversation about with them. Why not well he might not receive it I know he is passionate and I do not want that passion directed towards me. What does the lord want ?
He wants us to be in one accord
He wants us to be in unity and that is what pleases him
And he wants us if we are grieved to work it out.
But they are unwilling to do it because they do not see this as a spiritual battle were the devil is trying to divide the camp
They do not see it as a spiritual problem.
It is a spiritual battle that goes beyond personality conflicts
One thing that has been on my heart lately is the ministry is not about managing relationships between people. You are supposed to do that the Bible tells you how to do it. I'm supposed to come in at step number two
But instead of looking at it through spiritual eyes we look at it through the eyes of their problem.
You can't look at your problem through the eyes of Goliath
In the eyes of Goliath no one is strong enough
Through the eyes of the devil he can defeat any one with his weapons
He even thought he could take Job.
These giants They rob you of Joy
They paralyze you with fear
They get your mind off eternity
Lust is not just a physical battle it is a spiritual battle
It robs some people from getting saved
It takes their joy it has moved from the land God gave you and it makes you cower
Now you will not plow the land, plant the land and enjoy the crops and help your posterity
You are not living as if you are in the promised land you are living like you are a slave.
Health and sickness can be a giant that puts your hope in the flesh instead of in the Lord.
Our Hope is not in being well it is the Lord's return not in the arm of flesh
And if not dealt with with a spiritual view seeing it as a battle that is the Lords you will be defeated .
You have to look at it through the eyes of scripture when i am weak then am I strong.
Saul looked at the battle through the eyes of goliath
He played by his rules
One man and that is the rest of you will be my servants
And instead of swarming him they went along.
David did not play by his rules
He did not fight hand to hand combat
He took a sling the best weapon you could fight a giant with he could shoot at him and stay our of reach of his weapons he could reach his head no matter how high he towered.
He told him
46 This day will the Lord deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.
I will get you and your army I am playing by God's rules, not yours.
David looked at it through the eyes of the Lord
Goliath against God not me
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
It is not a flesh and blood battle
Unttill you see it through spiritual eyes you will not have the reason to fight.
Until you get a kingdom perspective you will not fight.
We will just learn to live with Goliath
17:16 And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.
80 times
Like a ritual at this point what are you going to do I am going to dress for battle go down when goliath comes out I will run.
What happens when you giant comes out do you even fight ?
He can't be beatn in the flesh.
He can't be beatn with self help books
He can't be beaten by trying harder
He can't be beaten by just doing it.
You cannot fight a spiritual battle in the flesh.
38 And Saul armed David with his armour, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head; also he armed him with a coat of mail.
39 And David girded his sword upon his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him.
40 And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.
He tried to arm him the same way the enemy was armed
He tried to get him to fight his way If you fight the giant on his terms there is not a sword big enough there is not a man big enough
If you fail to consider the spiritual there is not a pill big enough a lawyer a doacotr or a self help or any advice that is big enough
There is not armour strong enough to withstand the giants blow
He has defeated many men many strong men have been slain by him, he has been a man of war from his youth
He is a champion of the fleshly battle.
By fleshly means this giant will never be defeated.
See the battle for what it is a spiritual battle.
Get on your knees and fight with the weapons he gave you the helmet of salvation the sword of the spirit the breastplate of righteousness the girdle of truth and your feet shod with the gospel of peace. Praying always
Do you put your hope in a bigger man or in God ?
How do you view the battle ?

He failed to see David for who he was 17:33

29 And David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause?
30 And he turned from him toward another, and spake after the same manner: and the people answered him again after the former manner.
31 And when the words were heard which David spake, they rehearsed them before Saul: and he sent for him.
32 And David said to Saul, Let no man's heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.
33 And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.
Saul did not see who david really was
He thought he was not able
He was sending him out to the death he was writing the letter to his parents, he gave his life ffor the country he died bravely
Thou art not able to go
You are nothing but a youth
He saw him as nothing compared to the giant
He saw him as a boy
A stripling
But how could he see him for who he was if he did not see the battle for what it was
You know what he missed
That this was the deliver that the Lord has chosen to bring victory to the whole army
He did not see that he was God's choice
he did not see him as the man from Bethlehem
You see David is a type of Christ in this passage he is a representative of Jesus Christ. God has put this story in the Bible so when Jesus faced the devil on the cross you would say oh I see what's happening. when he on the cross said who is my adversary let him come near you would say I remember this.
When it says in Genesis 315 that he would bruze the serpent's head you would say I see
He is a deliver that the Lord sent after forty days
after Jesus was tempted 40 days in the wilderness there came out a deliverer
Moses, Elijah and Jesus fasted in the desert for 40 days each
It’s no surprise that three of the Bible’s most important figures each endured 40 days without food. As the ultimate test of faith, these Biblical greats used their fasts to achieve specific goals. Moses proved his loyalty to God and received the Ten Commandments. Elijah gained instruction on how to lead the people of Israel. And Jesus thwarted Satan’s temptations. In each case, they passed their tests and gained new insights into God’s ultimate plans.
The Israelites wandered in the desert for 40 years
After being freed from Egypt, Moses and the Israelites weren’t sure what to do next. God wanted them to find the Promised Land, but only after the generation of men who’d doubted His plan had passed. Than God sent joshua the deliver like christ himself
Before David fought with Goliath, David was anointed of God. Samuel had gone down to Bethlehem and poured a horn of oil upon his head. Not just a vial but a whole horn
Jesus, was anointed with the oil of gladness above his fellows. Grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. The Spirit was not given by measure unto him.
He was anointed when the spirit descended on him like a dove and a voice from heaven said this is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased
The Spirit of the Lord was upon him, and it was in the power of that Spirit with which he was anointed of the Father, that he went forth to fight the great battles of his Church.
He was about his his father's business
He was sent by his father to his brethren
He came unto his own and his own received him not they took him and slew him and said we will make the vineyard ours
He came bearing gifts from his father and they spitefully entreated him
David, you will remember, answered his brethren gentleness. He did not return railing for railing,
David was motivated by love of his people. He saw them defied by the Philistine.
For God so loved the World He loved his own: he was always ready to lay down his life for the sheep.
he was told that the man who should kill Goliath should be married to the king's daughter?
Jesus did it for the the joy that was set before him that he should have the Church for his spouse;
Goliath is the "champion", the mediator There is the host of the Philistines on the one side, and there is the host of Israel on the other side. A valley lies between them. Goliath says, "I will represent Philistia. I stand as the middle-man. Instead of all the rank and file coming forth personally to the fight, I appear as the representative of my nation—the mediator.
Choose you a mediator who will come and contend with me. Instead of the battle being between the individuals of which the respective armies are composed, let two representative men decide in in a battle question in debate who will serve who."
That was the ground that the Lord Jesus Christ fought the battles of his people. We fell in the first Adam, and our salvation now is by another representative—the second Adam. He is the Middle-man, the "one Mediator between God and men."
In his love to us, and his zeal for the glory of God, we may see him stepping forward into the midst of the arena which divides the camps of good and of evil, of God and of the devil, and there facing the adversary the devil , he stands to fight in our name and on our behalf
he can decide for us the battle which never could have been decided by us
We would have lost the giant was undefeatable by us
But the arm of the Lord was revealed through him and it is enough to win the victory for us, and for ever to end the conflicts between heaven and hell.
He did not fight with swords told peter to put them up
He fought in a different way
And remember that David cut off Goliath's head with his own sword.
the triumph of our Savior Jesus Christ is pictured in the story of David. He, "through death, destroyed him that had the power of death, that is, the devil."
"He death by dying slew"—cut off the giant's head with his own sword. The cross that was meant to be the death of the Savior was the death of sin.
He missed it the key to killing goliath
Is the man from bethlehem bringing gifts from his father.
You can't kill goliath you are not strong enough
Jesus came and killed him for you
And you will hear a thousand sermons on how to kill the giant but you will never be able to do it you need a mediator a deliverer
Jesus has conquered sin he has the power over death you must allow him to kill your giants
He tried to help him by putting his armour on him
Jesus does not need your help to kill the giant.
The things you are facing will never be defeated by a better strategy but by a better fighter
Let me ask you are you putting your hope for victory in your own strength or in the strength of Jesus
The deliever who has proven time and time again he is able
He slew a lion your adversary is like a lion he walketh about seeking whom he may devour and the deliverer
Look at your giants laughing at you
Look at the Giants in your life that you were facing. That we talked about earlier
What is your giant?
What is your hope in their defeat you or your saviour
Do you feel like he is not strong enough ?
Who do you think is stronger your giant of a problem or the Lord?
New pilgrim's progress movie
Christian is drowning in the slough of despondency
Castle of despair the giants are going to kill him but hopeful was in the cage with him and he cried out for help and he was given a key to get out it came from hope
Believing his help was more powerful than the giant.
121 I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.
2 My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.
3 He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.
When you think about your problem Do you see Jesus or the giant ?
There is no king saved by the multitude of an host: a mighty man is not delivered by much strength.
17 An horse is a vain thing for safety: neither shall he deliver any by his great strength.
18 Behold, the eye of the Lord is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy;
2 cor 6:3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:
4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
17:51 Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled.
52 And the men of Israel and of Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, until thou come to the valley, and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even unto Gath, and unto Ekron.
53 And the children of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines, and they spoiled their tents.
He gave them the victory and they pursued them unto the gates and the gates of hell did not prevail against them
You see they got their victory from his victory
They were more than conquerors, through him that had loved them and won the victory for them. let's think of ourselves as victors. Our Lord has won the victory.
We get our victory from the Lords victory
He killed the giant we fight in his victory against the philistines and get small victories from his great victory .
In closing I want you to think about your giant. I want you to look at that big ugly terrible giant that intimidates you and bullies you
have you viewed him as just a physical force that you need to overcome with a bigger sword?
I want you to understand that this is spiritual and it has eternal implications. And it must be dealt with as such
To what is your hope and deliverance from the giant? Are you looking to create your own victory or fight in the Lord's victory?
I want to tell you that every giant in here can be defeated without doubt because it is not in your power but in the wards
Take heart get your sling out and go cut his head off in the name of Jesus. And bring his head to church. next Sunday I want to see you driving to church with your Giants head on your hood knock off the Dodge ram symbol and put the Giants head there good. We have the victory through the Lord Jesus Christ let's go get it
Now some practical matters about fighting like david fought
You must be anointed .
That anointing comes from God do not try to go out without his anointing
if we are ever to do anything for God and for his Church we must be anointed with holy oil.
To attempt things in the flesh and presume God will help us will result in failure
You must be anointed to kill these giants
To win the lost
To help your family
To defeat your giants
Unless the Spirit of God be upon us, we have no might from within and no means from without to rely upon.
There cannot come out of you what has not been put into you.
You must receive and then give out.
"he that believeth on me, as the Scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water."
You cannot do David's work if you have not David's anointing.
When you remember that If Jesus waited for the anointing, you can you will fail without it
Jesus did not begin till Spirit of God rested upon him.
The apostles tarried at Jerusalem, waited to preach till power wast given to them from on high.
We must have that power.
Would it not change this church and this city if we had the anointing on us to preach to minister
Get on your knees church
Get to the cross. Get to your Master's feet.
Wait for the power to do Master's work, in the Master's way, to the Master's praise.
Next be about your father's business and the opportunity will come
He did not think he would become the hero in history that day
Do not look for your opportunity let it come to you just be about his business.
Your job is just to be ready it will come to you just be ready for it
How do you get ready
Become good with your weapons
40 And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.
48 And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came, and drew nigh to meet David, that David hastened, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.
49 And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth.
50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David.
He choose those stones like he did a thousand times before
There were no swords in israel in those days the philistines took them all but they could not take all the rocks or sling materials
He up there in the mountains with the sheep practiced his art of stone slinging one day to be ready for whatever came his way.
You just get ready for whatever the Lord may have come your way
Be ready and you will be used of God.
Finish the job
the work which David began,he finished.
He felled him but he was not satisfied till he had cut off his head.
What is one people I want people to take away from this
I want you to view the battle as david viewed it instead of how saul viewed it.
Culturally affectionatly The man from bethlehem won it and now you can win as well
Both are present at every battle are we going to look at it like the man of flesh or the spiritual man
