POTB - Prayers of Elisha

Introduction:

Elijah, sometimes called “the prophet of fire” () had remarkable power in prayer and probably had a tremendous influence over his successor Elisha.

Elisha prayed amazing prophetic prayers:

Bear attack of the youths that mocked him ()

Prayer’s for sight & blindness

Prayers for restoration of life.

Elisha was a man of prayer and had power in his prayers. I want to look at a few of his prayers tonight.

1. Prayer For Life ()

Elijah and Elisha both pray for the restoration of life for widow women and I am prone to get them confused.

Elijah’s Prayer for restoration of life ()

Widow of Zarephath - the woman who’s barrel never went empty.

Her and her son made it through the famine - but then her son died.

I think sometimes God does things for a future purpose that those people never fully understand - Jesus would point to this as a time of great faith and

They were in Jezebel’s hometown country.

Elijah takes the boy up to his bed in the loft, stretches himself over the boy and prays three times, “...O LORD my God, I pray thee, let this child’s soul come †into him again. 22 And the LORD heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived. ()

Elisha’s Prayer for restoration of life ()

A wealthy lady a SHunammite’s son passes away unexpectedly (a son God provided miracously) and is brought to the prophet Elisha.

He too prays a tremendous unrecorded prayer

Stretches himself over the child - and the child warms (obviously he could tell a difference but wasn’t satisfied- sometimes praying is like that - I see a difference, God is working but He’s not finished yet. Kind of like the blind man that Jesus touched, but he could only see men as trees walking, so Jesus touched him again. Elisha knew God had so much more for this lady than just a warm body. Lord help me to know when a prayer needs a second touch!)

He walked in the house to and fro- paced, probably praying

Goes back up and stretches himself on the child again.

This time the child sneezes seven times and opened his eyes. - This was feta comple the prayer was answered.

2. Prayer for sight and blindness ()

Prayer for Spiritual sight - ()

Prayed for eyes to be opened - I love how it says in the verse - “And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw...”

Having his eyes opened changed his perspective
