Joseph, great character of the OT

Notes
Transcript

INTRODUCTION:

Joseph is one of the great individuals of the OT.
With the exception of Abraham, the account of the Joseph occupies more space than any other personal narrative in the OT.
Because God never uses space unwisely or without purpose, there must be worthwhile lessons in the life of Joseph.
But it makes wonder, “Why Jospeh never left Egypt to go look for his father or brethren?”
Joseph had to have some pain after what he went through with his own brothers.
Consider that Jospeh named his firstborn son, Manasseh.
Do you know what that name means? It means forgetfulness.
Genesis 41:51 NKJV
Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh: “For God has made me forget all my toil and all my father’s house.”
8. In other words, the remembrance of home and his family had been a constant source of pain, and he could never think of them without it being agony in his heart.
9. But, with God’s help, he eventually did forget them and prospered greatly by God.
10. When I think about forgiveness, I recalled the recent event of the police officer Amber Guyger after she is convicted of killing Brandt Jeans brother Botham, who was just sitting in his own apartment.
11. When you think and Joseph and Jesus you can see many parallels.

I. THEY WERE BOTH OBJECTS OF THEIR FATHER’S LOVE

A. Joseph was the object of Jacob’s love, primarily because he was the “son of his old age” ().
1. Joseph gave his son a coat of many colors.
B. Multiple times, we see in the gospels that Jesus was the beloved Son of God.
From His baptism by John to His transfiguration on the mount =, we hear from heaven, “This is my beloved son.”

II. THEY WERE BOTH HATED BY THEIR BRETHREN DESPITE THEIR LOVE AND INNOCENCE

A. For Jospeh, the special love of his father contributed to the hatred by his own brothers.
Genesis 37:4 NKJV
But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him and could not speak peaceably to him.
B. His dreams drove a further wedge of hatred between them ().
C. You can read and observe the times he weeps out of love.
Genesis 42:24 NKJV
And he turned himself away from them and wept. Then he returned to them again, and talked with them. And he took Simeon from them and bound him before their eyes.
Genesis 43:30 NKJV
Now his heart yearned for his brother; so Joseph made haste and sought somewhere to weep. And he went into his chamber and wept there.
Gen.
D. We read the same thing happening to Jesus.
John 1:11 NKJV
He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.
Isaiah 59:3–4 NKJV
For your hands are defiled with blood, And your fingers with iniquity; Your lips have spoken lies, Your tongue has muttered perversity. No one calls for justice, Nor does any plead for truth. They trust in empty words and speak lies; They conceive evil and bring forth iniquity.
Isai
We see their hatred and rejection of Him in His short time on Earth.
Matthew 27:1 NKJV
When morning came, all the chief priests and elders of the people plotted against Jesus to put Him to death.
John 5:43 NKJV
I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive.
John 12:48 NKJV
He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him—the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day.
Acts 2:22 NKJV
“Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves also know—
Acts 2:23 NKJV
Him, being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, you have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death;
A
E. Did Jesus deserve this? Of course not.
F. Thus, both Joseph and Jesus were hated despite their love and innocence.

III. THEY WERE BOTH USED BY GOD FOR SALVATION AND DELIVERANCE

A. Jospeh’s life is a wonderful testimony to the providence of God.
He admits as much after he reveals himself to his brethren.
Genesis 45:5–7 NKJV
But now, do not therefore be grieved or angry with yourselves because you sold me here; for God sent me before you to preserve life. For these two years the famine has been in the land, and there are still five years in which there will be neither plowing nor harvesting. And God sent me before you to preserve a posterity for you in the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance.
B. Jesus’ life is the core message of redemption, how He came to bring salvation and deliverance to us from the bondage of sin.
Luke 19:10 NKJV
for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
Hebrews 11:16 NKJV
But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them.
C. They were both used by God for salvation and deliverance.

IV. THEY WERE BOTH FORGIVING TOWARD THOSE WHO HAD WRONGED THEM

A. Jospeh demonstrated great forgiveness to his brethren (Gen, 45:4-15).
B. Joseph kept his word, continuing to show forgiveness in his relationship with his family when they moved to join him in Egypt.
C. Jesus pronounced the great statement of forgiveness did He not?
Luke 23:34 NKJV
Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.” And they divided His garments and cast lots.

CONCLUSION:

Jospeh’s brethren would eventually bow down to him.
And, Jesus’ brethren (yea, all humanity) will bow to Him.
