Main Idea: The Scriptures clearly reveal the gospel of Jesus Christ so that it will be proclaimed and believed.

The Scriptures clearly reveal the gospel of Jesus Christ.

3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received:
“first importance” nothing is more central or more important than the gospel.
Paul delivered what he received. Not his message to craft. crucial and urgent message.
Notice Christ is the subject of the following sentences and phrases.
Christ died, he was buried, he was raised, he appeared (4 times)

that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures,
Christ the promised Messiah, the incarnate One-fully God and fully man, Christ died.
He did not simply die. he died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures (plural not singular).
The gospel is the message of the entire Bible. Beginning with the promise of the head crusher in , the ram in Isaacs place, the passover lamb, the sacrificial system in the book of Leviticus, and the promise of the prophets. The Bible points to the One who would suffer for the sins of his people.
Christ, the sinless One, bearing our sin in our place, exchanges his righteousness to us. He took what He did not deserve to give us what we do not deserve and could never earn.
Paul explains in detail in Romans 3
Romans 3:21–26 ESV
21 But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. 26 It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
Christ satisfied the just wrath of God for our sins in our place. After bearing the wrath of God, He died and was buried, proof that He was in fact dead. Dead dead. Being that He is the Son of God, He did not remain dead...
4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. 6 Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. 7 Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. 8 Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me.
he was raised...he appeared. Just as the burial verified Christ’s death, so too the appearances demonstrated that he was risen from the dead. (Schreiner 304)
The resurrection was in accordance with the Scriptures. Just as the message of the Bible points to the death of Christ for our sins, the Scriptures reveal his resurrection. During the message on the day of Pentecost, Peter quotes
Psalm 16:10 ESV
10 For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption.
Psalm 16:8–11 ESV
8 I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken. 9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure. 10 For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption. 11 You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
Why is the resurrection essential?
Romans 4:23–25 ESV
23 But the words “it was counted to him” were not written for his sake alone, 24 but for ours also. It will be counted to us who believe in him who raised from the dead Jesus our Lord, 25 who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.
Christ is our propitiation—the perfect and acceptable sacrifice bearing the wrath of God. He is our justification. Our sins are forgiven and His righteousness, not our own, is credited to us. We are declared righteous in his sight.
Romans 4:23–5:1 ESV
23 But the words “it was counted to him” were not written for his sake alone, 24 but for ours also. It will be counted to us who believe in him who raised from the dead Jesus our Lord, 25 who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification. 1 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Christ is our propitiation—the perfect and acceptable sacrifice bearing the wrath of God. He is our justification. Our sins are forgiven and His righteousness, not our own, is credited to us. We are declared righteous in his sight.
Without the Cross and the resurrection, there is no justification.
How is the redeeming work of Christ applied to me?
Romans 5:1 ESV
1 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
No longer separated and falling short.
Transition. Why do the Scriptures reveal the gospel?

The Scriptures clearly reveal the gospel of Jesus Christ so that it will be proclaimed.

9 For I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. 11 Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed.
Paul makes it clear that he did not deserve salvation and he did not deserve to be an apostle. Why is he a christian and a proclaimer of the gospel? the grace of God
10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain.
I shrink when I hear this verse used an excuse to live a life that fails to reveal Christ.
The underserved favor of God(grace) results in a changed life with a changed purpose. Christ is our all and all.
Compels us to share...“we preach and so your believed”
Romans 10:14–17 ESV
14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?” 17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
there is no plan B.

Am I proclaiming the gospel?
Romans 1:16 ESV
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
How do you know you have been transformed by the gospel? no longer ashamed. The power of God to save you comes through your life and through your lips.
Illus: ping pong balls—Who’s your One? They will never come to Christ without the clarity of the gospel.
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
we proclaim so that others will believe.

The Scriptures clearly reveal the gospel of Jesus Christ so that it will be believed.

1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain.
Paul preached, the Corinthians received(believed).
Then “if” How do you know if someone has truly become a Christian...
Romans 10:8–13 ESV
8 But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); 9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. 11 For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. 13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
everyone who call on the name of the Lord will be saved.
Message from a worker this week...
Illus: Tonight, we are hosting a local brother and sister and their toddler for dinner. These folks have been believers for over 8 years now. Their father in the faith was an American teacher a who was killed in 2012 for his bold witness.
Given the circumstances under which they came to faith and then immediately saw their mentor martyred, they have understandably been afraid to ever gather with other believers

The ongoing impact of salvation...
“in which you stand and by which you are being saved” standing on the Rock who is Christ who began and good work and will carry it to completion.
Then “if” if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. How do you know if someone has truly become a Christian…they believe and keep on believing…they hold fast to the word.
Am I believing the gospel?
Romans 5:6–11 ESV
6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— 8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. 11 More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
Past “justified” v. 9
Present reconciled and rejoicing (v. 10-11)
Future “much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God” (v. 9)

Pray for encouraging and fruitful conversations. Specifically, pray we would be able to push them toward consistently gathering. Given the circumstances under which they came to faith and then immediately saw their mentor martyred, they have understandably been afraid to ever gather with other believers.

Do you believe?
Do you see the gospel clearly? No longer just Jesus... that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve.
Will you identify with him?
Cry to Him for salvation: confessing your sin and need for Christ alone to save you (tell your leader now, another student—if you don’t know what to say, get help)
