John 14:12–14 ESV
12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. 13 Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.

Introduction

Context

Final discourse between Jesus and His disciples
Jesus had just clarified that He is the only way to Father; pointed to:
Inner unity
Words
Words
Works
John’s view was not the deity of the Son, but the unity between the Father and the Son
Work were revelatory actions which gave a glimpse to a greater reality

Text analysis

The emphasis on this section rests on the continuation of the works of Jesus
This passage represents a passing of the torch, or the mantle and responsibility of continuing these works

Works

What are these works? John’s use of works - 35 times in 30 verses
John 5:17–21 ESV
17 But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.” 18 This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God. 19 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel. 21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will.

Jesus had healed a paralytic man on the Sabbath
Jesus had healed a paralytic man on the Sabbath
Was accused for breaking the Sabbath
He pointed back to the Father working (an accepted thought to the Jew)
Used that as justification for His working, thus claiming equality with God
Spoke about the Son doing greater works - mentioned again in our text
The work of the Father was to give life, which the Son was also doing
John 6:25–29 ESV
25 When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?” 26 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. 27 Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.” 28 Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”
John 6:29 ESV

John 6.25-
Jesus had just feed the five thousand
The Jews sought to make Jesus king -
Jesus challenged their desires as selfish
When asked what the works God required of them, He answered that it was to believe in Him
John 8:31–39 ESV
31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” 33 They answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?” 34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. 35 The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are offspring of Abraham; yet you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you. 38 I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard from your father.” 39 They answered him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would be doing the works Abraham did,
John 8:31–39 ESV

John 8.31-
Jesus challenged the Jews who believed in Him with what it really meant to be His disciples
He used the examples of slaves and sons, positioning Himself was one who freed the slaves and made them sons
In the face of their denial, He used example of Abraham as example, that Abraham performed the works of believe God - this is not the initial belief that Paul talks about, but the continued trusting the Father
He accused them of not performing those works, calling them children of the devil
John 14:9–11 ESV
9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.

John 14.9-
Jesus had just made the claim that He was the only way to God
Now furthered that claim that in seeing Jesus the disciples had seen the Father
Pointed to the works as authentication of His unity with the Father
In John, works are the revelation of the Son as the One sent from the Father, in whom we are to believe and thereby receive life; having received life, we are tasked with performing the same works, pointing others to the Son
Having received life, we are tasked with performing the same works, pointing others to the Son

How these works are accomplished

Using as a source
Love one another redemptively
Believe in the Triune God
Do works
Ask for anything in His name
Keep Jesus’ commands
Abide in Jesus and His love

Asking in His name

the aorist tense - this a snapshot/summary statement
Limited by
What brings glory to God
The example of Jesus
What accords with the name of Jesus
This is possible because Jesus has ascended to a place of glory - “I am going to the Father”; look back to

Application

The Gospel does not stop at our being made with right with God
We have in this text a glorious purpose offered for the Christian, to continue the revelation of the unity between the Father and the Son; we will also see that these works are an indication of the revelation of our unity with the Godhead
Must learn to frame our every activity as an opportunity of revealing the glorious Godhead through us
Understand the efficacy of this life - the reigning King Jesus WILL answer our request - so have confidence!

The name is thus a summary way of stating what God is in p 802 himself (his name is all that is known to be true about him and his motives of action) and also what God is to others, allowing them to know his name (letting them into his truth) as sharing his name with them (letting them into his fellowship).
