Who is Your 1?
Part 1
02-09-2020
Last week we set the Vision for 2020
If you will recall from last week
we told you that our verse for the year as a church would be
Luke 15:4 NASB95
4 “What man among you, if he has a hundred sheep and has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open pasture and go after the one which is lost until he finds it?
Jesus left the 99 to pursue the 1 who was lost
And Jesus pursued that 1 until He found it
Praise the Lord he pursues that 1 until He finds it
Our vision for 2020 is who is your one
And last week we asked you to seek the Lord for 1 person you know that is lost
For one person you know that is lost that needs the Lord
How did that go forever one
This week we will dive more into that vision and what that looks like
Before I just come out with it and tell you about this 1 sitting there let me do some explaining
Matthew 4:18–22 NASB95
18 Now as Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon who was called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. 19 And He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20 Immediately they left their nets and followed Him. 21 Going on from there He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and He called them. 22 Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.
You and I are called by Jesus
Just like James and John and Peter and Andrew were called you and I are called by Jesus to be fishers of men
We are called to go out and catch people for Christ
We can’t do that unless we are willing to do a few things
Unless we are willing to put our old net down
And unless we are willing to be training
Lets do this out of order for a minute
The training
Matthew 28:18–20 NASB95
18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
You and I to go and tell people about Jesus
But you and I cannot do that unless we know Jesus
See church you cannot share what you don’t know
I don’t share with people how to fix cars, because I don’t know how to do that
Do you see what I am saying church
You cannot share with people what you don’t know
And some of you say you know but do you really
John 15:8 NASB95
8 “My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples.
The test to see wether you are a disciple of Christ is not some cool handshake
The test is not to see how much you can give to your church, or how many times you can come
But church the test to see wether you are a disciple or not is to see what sort of fruit you produce
People will know you are a believer not because of the music you listen to or the shirts you wear but the fruit your life produces
Discipleship is not about what you know
The training Jesus is talking about is not about what you know
There is no test you have to pass to share the Gospel with Jesus
In his book, The Master Plan of Evangelism, Robert Coleman said:
“When will the church learn this lesson? Preaching to the masses, although necessary, will never suffice in the work of preparing leaders for evangelism. Nor can occasional prayer meetings and training classes for Christian workers do this job... Individual women and men are God’s method. God’s plan for discipleship is not something, but someone.”
God is glorified when you and I go out and share the Gospel
You and I are called to go and share the Gospel
You and I are to go after those who are lost
Luke 5:17–20 NASB95
17 One day He was teaching; and there were some Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting there, who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem; and the power of the Lord was present for Him to perform healing. 18 And some men were carrying on a bed a man who was paralyzed; and they were trying to bring him in and to set him down in front of Him. 19 But not finding any way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down through the tiles with his stretcher, into the middle of the crowd, in front of Jesus. 20 Seeing their faith, He said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven you.”
See church an example of followers of Jesus bringing someone to Jesus
These guys are friends and they have heard that Jesu will be in town, they have heard that Jesus can heal people and want to give their friend a shot at being healed
Church they pursued healing for their friend
They wanted to do something to give him a chance at walking again
So church they decide to pick him up and carry him to where they knew Jesus was
Except they got their late and were not able to get in
They so desired Jesus to heal their friend that they didn't let that stop them
They chose to get up on the roof and ripe a hole in the roof and lower the friend down
What sort of love they have for their friend
What an example of going after the lost church, they ripped a hole in the roof to lower their friend down
Maybe you and I need to ask our selves if we are that friend, are we willing to pursue that one person for Jesus like these guys did
So church let me read you this little story
“Now it came to pass that a group existed who called themselves fishermen. And lo, there were many fish in the waters all around. In fact, the whole area was surrounded by streams and lakes filled with fish. And the fish were hungry.
“Week after week, month after month, and year after year, these who called themselves fishermen met in meetings and talked about their call to fish, the abundance of fish, and how they might go about fishing. Year after year they carefully defined what fishing means, defended fishing as an occupation and declared that fishing is always to be a primary task of fishermen.
“Continually, they searched for new and better methods of fishing and for new and better definitions of fishing. They created witty slogans and displayed them on big, beautiful banners.
“These fishermen built large, beautiful buildings called “Fishing Headquarters.” The plea was that everyone should be a
fisherman and every fisherman should fish. One thing they didn’t do, however: They did not fish.
“In addition to meeting regularly, they organized a board to send out fishermen to other places where there were many fish.
The board hired staffs and appointed committees and held many meetings to define fishing, to defend fishing and to decide what new streams should be thought about. But the staff and committee members did not fish.
“Large, elaborate and expensive training centers were built whose original and primary purpose was to teach fishermen how to fish. Over the years, courses were offered on the needs of fish, the nature of fish, where to find fish, the psychological reactions of fish and how to approach and feed fish.
“Those who taught had doctorates in fishology, but the teachers did not fish. They only taught fishing. Year after year, after tedious training, many graduated and were given fishing licenses. They were sent to do full-time fishing, some to distant waters, which were filled with fish. Many who felt the call to be fishermen responded. They were commissioned and sent to fish. But like the fishermen back home, they never fished.
“They engaged in all kinds of other occupations. Some felt their job was to relate to the fish in a good way so the fish would know the difference between good and bad fishermen. Others felt that simply letting the fish know they were nice, land-loving
neighbors and how loving and kind they were was enough.
“Now it’s true that many of the fishermen sacrificed and put up with all kinds of difficulties. Some lived near the water and bore the smell of dead fish every day. They received the ridicule of some who made fun of their fishermen’s clubs and the fact that they claimed to be fishermen yet never fished.
“Imagine how hurt some were when one day a person suggested that those who don’t fish were really not fishermen, no matter how much they claimed to be. Yet it did sound correct. Is a person a fisherman if, year after year, he never fishes? More plainly stated: Is one really following if he isn’t fishing?”
It’s time to start casting our nets. Who’s the one you’re going to go after?
Who’s your one?
Luke 15:4 NASB95
4 “What man among you, if he has a hundred sheep and has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open pasture and go after the one which is lost until he finds it?
Church let me ask you this
Who is your one?
In just a few minutes we will have our invitation
This morning as we move into a time of invitation the invitation is going to be different this morning
It will require you to be obedient
This morning If you are here today and do not have a personal relationship with Jesus we want to invite you to the front and there will be someone down here who can speak with you about beginning a relationship with Jesus
