Context

Jesus just healed a blind man.
Disciples asked why is this man blind? His mom or dad?
The Pharisees start to hate on Jesus...
They call the blind man and tell him
“Give God the glory, this man a sinner!” Since Jesus healed on the Sabbath.
The guys responds, I don’t know if hes a sinner… I can just see now.
Read chapter 9
Read 10:1-10
There are 2 “I AM” statements in this chapter.
This whole picture would have been totally understandable, because so many people had sheep back in that day.
There would have been a wall around the sheep… kinda built from rocks, then there would be an opening, which is a gate (we could say).
At night, the shepherd of the sheep would sleep in the opening to be a door so the sheep don’t get out, and the wolves wouldn’t get in.
V. 1-2
The thief and robber would go over the wall to hurt or steel the sheep.
Jesus is comparing the religious leaders to thieves and robbers.
Jesus healed the blind man, but the leaders threw the guy out of the synagogue.
The leaders didn’t care about the people...
They cared about their own needs.
They used people for their own gain.
They were like real robbers, they break in steal, murder, only care for themselves.
We see a lot of this happening today..
False Teachers
Cults
They work on peoples emotions to get what they want.
They don’t care about their people in the church, they just want to use them for gain.
If they cared, they wouldn’t be preaching a false gospel.
V.3-5
The keeper opens the gate for the true shepherd.
The sheep recognize his voice.
What does this show?
This is speaking of relationship.
When you actually believe in Jesus as the Messiah, and you understand the teachings and His words, then you won’t fall for the thieves and robbers.
It is so important for you to be in prayer in reading.
How do we know God and what He says?
You have to read.
If you aren’t growing, you’ll be a weak christian, and if you’re a weak christian, you’ll fall for anything.
Spending time in prayer, reading, and fellowship is crucial to your relationship with God.
V.4
IN life, Jesus is walking before you...
He leads you through the good and He continues to lead through the lows.
Psalm 23:4 NKJV
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
He goes first!
When life is hard, which it is… God is leading you through that hard time, You just have to keep your gaze fixed on him.
V.5-6
The true sheep who know Jesus won’t follow a stranger.
We have many “sheep” following these false teachers, false gods… because they don’t know Jesus.
V. 7-9
Jesus says, “I am the door...”
I am the way to have relationship!
Galatians 3:26 NKJV
For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.
Galatians 4:5 NKJV
to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.
As a child of God...
Romans 8:1–2 NKJV
There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.
Ephesians 1:3 NKJV
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,
We’ve been reconciled, forgiven, and are now heirs to the throne.
Jesus is saying, “ I am the way to relationship and salvation.”
Everyone else that came, they were liars… They are thieves and robbers, and only cared about their own needs.
Pasture -
They will be kept safe and God will provide.
V.10
The false shepherd comes to destroy the sheep.
But, jesus came that the sheep may have life and an abundant life.
Salvation
Love
Freedom

I am the Good Shepherd

So we saw that Jesus is the door to relationship
The door to God’s presence
The door to the pasture.
The enemy
Steal
Kill
Destroy
V.11
This is one of my favorite “I am” statements.
Psalm 23:1 NKJV
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
Psalm 80:1–2 NKJV
Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, You who lead Joseph like a flock; You who dwell between the cherubim, shine forth! Before Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh, Stir up Your strength, And come and save us!
Ecclesiastes 12:11 NKJV
The words of the wise are like goads, and the words of scholars are like well-driven nails, given by one Shepherd.
All these verses are speaking about God!
When Jesus says he is the good shepherd, He’s saying “I am God.”
Good Shepherd
Jesus is the good shepherd because He gave his life, so that we may have life.
He sacrifices his life because ours is the one in danger.
In the ancient days, bears, wolves, lions, and other animals were common.
The shepherd would love their sheep and do what must be done to protect their sheep.
In our day, it would be like a good parent or friend sacrificing their lives for yours.
It should bring comfort into the lives of a believer, knowing that we have a good shepherd.
Because we are sheep.
The enemy is coming for you..
We need to be lead by a shepherd.
Psalm 23:1–3 NKJV
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.
When we have Jesus as our shepherd, we lack nothing
May not have everything you want, but you have what you need.
David knew that His God would provide.
V. 4 - Psalms speaks of correction
SHepherd had two things in his hand...
Rod and Staff
When the sheep would wonder, the shepherd would use the staff to bring them back.
When we wonder… God corrects us.
V.5-6 - Speaks of protection
Jesus is protecting David.
He’s protecting us too.
Some think God doesn’t care, because bad things happen...
Bad things happen, because sin is still here.
There are demons and false gods and powers at work.
Yes, bad does happen, but that doesn’t mean God isn't real or protecting you.
When we are in heaven, we’ll probably see how many times God has intervened on our behalf.

John 10:12–13 NKJV
But a hireling, he who is not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf catches the sheep and scatters them. The hireling flees because he is a hireling and does not care about the sheep.
Jesus is saying, “I;m not a hireling, I don’t run from danger! I care about what is mine.”
If you are one of His sheep.. He cares for you. Hirelings just worked for money… Jesus does it because you are His.
V.14
Jesus is repeating His “I am” statement.
Then he talks about how he has an intimate relationship with us.
V.15
Jesus compares our relationship with God, like His with the Father.
The intimacy, the closeness, the communion, we can have that!
V.16
This is talking about the Gentiles...
Not Jesus coming to america
Talks about how Jews and the Gentiles would be one flock.
It was crazy, since the Jews hated the Gentiles.
