Introduction

Ephesians 5:15–21 ESV
15 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, 19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, 20 giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.
eph 5:15-22

Looking carefully at your life

Ephesians 5:15 ESV
Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise,
Eph 5:
Examine carefully how you are living your life.
A. How were the Ephesians living their lives. Why Paul exhorts them to Look Carefully how they walk
Explain why Paul uses the metaphor for walking
B. How are you living your life?
The word used here for look is BLEPO it means to be vigilant, beware, watch out, pay attention
The word used for Carefully is AKRIBOS is means to very accurately, carefully and deliberately
The HCSB says in this verse PAY VERY CAREFUL attention
We are commanded here in this verse to Examine carefully the way we live our lives. The verb tense is imperative. This is a Command from God. Our master, Christ says to do this. How do you obey this command?
We are told here not to live as unwise
C. What does it mean to live as unwise?
The unwise are futile in their thinking . No aim or direction for life with any eternal value at all. The unwise have darkened hearts living ultimately for self gratification and self glorification.
We would be foolish and unwise to live our lives as if we have never known Christ. We are given the greatest commandment from Jesus. To love God with all our being and to love people as our self. If this is not the driving motivating truth in your life you are living as unwise.
D. What does it mean to live as wise?
Proverbs 9:10 ESV
10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.
The bible teaches us Wisdom starts with knowing God. To gain insight into what is true in the universe we must start with the knowledge of God
We are commanded to live as wise people.
The Christian must walk in the full light of the Gospel to be wise. Your new life as a follower must be motivated and directed by the truth of the Gospel.

To be wise is more than to know; it means to use, apply, and thus to get the most out of knowledge in our walking or in the management of our life

The plan of salvation and how we fit into that plan of truth.
How can we participate in this glorious plan and thus live wisely

Using your time wisely

Ephesians 5:16 ESV
making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.

Do not be foolish

Ephesians 5:17 ESV
Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.
Psalm 39:4–5 ESV
4 “O Lord, make me know my end and what is the measure of my days; let me know how fleeting I am! 5 Behold, you have made my days a few handbreadths, and my lifetime is as nothing before you. Surely all mankind stands as a mere breath! Selah
Ecclesiastes 1:2 ESV
2 Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity.
Understanding the Lord’s will
Psalm 39:4–13 ESV
4 “O Lord, make me know my end and what is the measure of my days; let me know how fleeting I am! 5 Behold, you have made my days a few handbreadths, and my lifetime is as nothing before you. Surely all mankind stands as a mere breath! Selah 6 Surely a man goes about as a shadow! Surely for nothing they are in turmoil; man heaps up wealth and does not know who will gather! 7 “And now, O Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in you. 8 Deliver me from all my transgressions. Do not make me the scorn of the fool! 9 I am mute; I do not open my mouth, for it is you who have done it. 10 Remove your stroke from me; I am spent by the hostility of your hand. 11 When you discipline a man with rebukes for sin, you consume like a moth what is dear to him; surely all mankind is a mere breath! Selah 12 “Hear my prayer, O Lord, and give ear to my cry; hold not your peace at my tears! For I am a sojourner with you, a guest, like all my fathers. 13 Look away from me, that I may smile again, before I depart and am no more!”
psalm

Not living foolishly

what happens to the mind when under the influence of something that intoxicates us?

Being filled with the Holy Spirit

Ephesians 5:18–21 ESV
18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, 19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, 20 giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.
Be filled - Imperative to be completely filled
John 15:5 ESV
5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
John 15:
John 15:11 ESV
11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.

14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
Colossians 2:6–7 ESV
6 Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, 7 rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.
Colossians 2:12–17 ESV
12 having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead. 13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14 by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. 15 He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him. 16 Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. 17 These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ.
Colossians 2:6 ESV
6 Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him,
