1 Corinthians 16:13–14 NASB95
Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love.
The beginning of man’s problem was his abdication of his God given role as leader in the home.
This happened in .
Adam as the man was made first and he was made to be the leader.
It was to Adam that God gave the covenant rules.
He was told to Keep and cultivate the garden.
God then created Eve to be His helper as they multiplied and filled the earth with worshippers of God.
But then the serpent came in, and he tempted Eve.
He went after after.
The Bible makes it clear that Adam was with her when she ate, but he was not doing his job.
Even was leading their family at that point.
He had stepped out of his God given role to lead the home.
But when God came to the Garden after they had eaten of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, do you remember who he came looking for?
Genesis 3:9 NASB95
Then the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?”
It is the man that he speak to first.
It the man who he questions. Why?
Because it is the man who he holds primarily responsible.
If you don’t believe that just go Look at .
Romans 5:12 NASB95
Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned—
Romans 5:14 NASB95
Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned in the likeness of the offense of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come.
It was the offense of Adam.
Sure Eve was tempted, but it was the leader of that family unit that was held responsible. It was Adam.
God held Adam personally responsible.
It wasn’t that Eve wasn’t guilty. She was. She is punished as well in .
But Adam’s failure to lead, and his giving up of his God given role as head of his home is what led to this.
The same is happening today.
Men have relinquished their responsibilities as men to lead their homes.
Some males only contribution to the family and to their children is their participation in the act that brought the child into the world to begin with.
Men can blame women all they want, but I’ve listened to SEVERAL people who work on the front lines of “crisis” pregnancy centers and one of the key factors is that the man who fathered the child in the womb, got his temporary fix and pleasure met, and now has walked out and left and left the mom to pick up the pieces.
Where are the men?

We hear it....
I want you to look at the verses of Scripture I read earlier. They give us another picture of what it looks like to be a man of God.
1 Corinthians 16:13–14 NASB95
Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love.
Five things here that men, specifically the leaders of the Corinthian church were to be.
They were to be alert.
Watchful.
Over themselves.
1 Peter 5:8 NASB95
Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
Proverbs 25:28 NASB95
Like a city that is broken into and without walls Is a man who has no control over his spirit.
The Old Testament watchman.
If they failed, people would die.
So too men need to be alert and watchful.
Over their wives.
Ephesians 5:25 NASB95
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her,
Ephesians 5:8 NASB95
for you were formerly darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord; walk as children of Light
Over their children.
Ephesians 6:4 NASB95
Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
Over the church.
God has placed men as the leader over the church.
The men are to lead and part of leading is being watchful.
We cannot just let anything and everything happen here.
It matters who preaches. It matters who sings. It matters what is taught.
Men are to be watchful.
The second command here is to stand firm in the faith.
I believe this is in reference to the teaching of the faith. I think Biblical men read The Bible.
I think Biblical men read The Bible.
Men in order to stand firm in the faith, we have to take up the Bible and read.
Sin is defeated not just by setting up barriers and accountability. Sin is defeated by believing God and His Word over and above Satan’s lies.
How did Jesus respond to temptation? By Scripture.
I think biblical men spend time in prayer.
Mark 1:35 NASB95
In the early morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went away to a secluded place, and was praying there.
If the Son of God did this and saw this to be important, we should take our cue to do it as well.
I believe this is how we stand firm in the faith.
The third command here is to “Act Like Men.”
This is a call to maturity.
Its a call to make right decisions and lead.
Its a call to own your mistakes and take responsibility over what God has given you.
The fourth command is to be strong.
I believe this is a call for me to
I believe this is a call for men to work hard. To shoulder the load.
1 Corinthians 15:10 NASB95
But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me did not prove vain; but I labored even more than all of them, yet not I, but the grace of God with me.
Illustration- Antioch Bible Study.
Discussion last week on the Bible’s leadership design in the church, namely, men being the leaders, the pastor and deacons of the church.
“We can’t get men to serve.” Do you see the irony in that?
Ironic that it was said by a man not serving.
A man who will sit back and say well we cant get them to serve
Being biblical and being a man means doing the hard work of leading your home and the church.
Fifth, Look at verse 14 Love.
1 Corinthians 16:14 NASB95
Let all that you do be done in love.
Love God and Love of neighbor.
All men have failed. But we have this thing called the Gospel.
So we have to ask the question that God asked in the Garden.
Adam, Where are you? Men, Where are you?
