Part 2

Last week we discussed that the righteous shall live by faith () This week we are going to talk about those who are not righteous. People that do not have faith in who Christ.
God hates unrighteousness of men. What is unrighteousness?
What is unrighteousness?
Unrighteousness is sin and anything that is against a Holy God. Sin is what completely separates us from God. Sin makes us an enemy of God.
Romans 1:18–20 ESV
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.

Romans 1:18-32
God has revealed himself through nature.
Holman New Testament Commentary: Romans A. Revelation of the Wrath of God (1:18–20)

In the most elementary of human terms, this is not a case of a father who chastens his teenager for something that he never even told him to do. Rather, this is a case of the teenager leaving school, and all the way home seeing billboards, street signs, flashing marquees, signs on buses, bumper stickers, airplanes pulling message banners—“Billy, don’t forget to set the garbage out for the trash truck!” Then, when he gets home, there are phone messages, e-mail messages, and television commercials reminding him of the same thing. That is how plainly God has made knowledge of himself available to the human race, Paul says.

This is to say that whenever we are looking at things outside like the trees, clouds, flowers, grass, animals, and oceans. We are looking at the invisible attributes of God. Have you ever just been in awe of nature? I secretly love the beach. I love looking out at the ocean and watching the waves. The birds flying over and even the dolphins jumping through the waves. It just screams divine nature to me. It shows me that there has to be an ultimate creator and what is awesome about that is that I have a relationship with the creator.
There is enough evidence in the world that points to a divine creator.
Paul then writes that there is not an excuse for us to say that God does not exist. Paul is saying that the people who do not have a Bible and have not read His Truth are also guilty of suppressing the Truth because it is revealed in nature itself.
Romans 1:18–32 ESV
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. 24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen. 26 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27 and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error. 28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. 29 They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.
Romans 1:18 ESV
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.
The wrath of God is revealed against all sin. Sin always suppresses the glory of God. When we are living in sin we cannot see the glory in nature. Yes we might think it is beautiful but we do not truly understand the beauty of it when we have sin in our lives.
God’s wrath is without .
God’s wrath is not the same type of wrath that we as humans experience. When we invoke our wrath on someone we do it most of the time sinfully. God’s wrath is without sin and another way to look at God’s wrath is through his love. God’s love is similar to the of a father who’s child is being abused we would be really concerned if the father was not angry. God looks us the same way we abuse ourselves with Sin so God’s wrath is evident.
The reason for God’s wrath is out of judgement. When God judges he judges based on his righteousness, and no one can compare to the righteousness of God. When we show our wrath it comes from our unrighteousness.
Romans 1:17 ESV
17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”
God however reveals his righteousness in the Gospel as us to have an escape from God’s wrath. Without the Gospel there is no escape from God’s Wrath. God makes a way for us who do not deserve his righteousness to be accepted as righteous. I would not bet the best minute of my life to get me to heaven and the good news is that I do not have too.
Romans 1:16 ESV
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
The reason that there is power in the Gospel is that through Jesus God has given us the opportunity for salvation. But salvation comes to those who believe that Jesus was who he says he was and that we believe that Jesus can save us.
Romans 1:19 ESV
19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them.
This is vital because everybody needs the Gospel because we are all sinners. Even though nature screams of God’s Glory we are blinded by sin to see this.

What is unrighteousness?
Romans 1:21–23 ESV
21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.
The reason for God’s Wrath.
The reason for God’s Wrath is .
Idolatry is the chief sin that brings about God’s wrath. In the big scheme of creation there are 2 different groups the creator and the created. The created are less than the creator. Therefore, we must look up toward the created in worship. Whenever we start to place more emphasis on idols in our lives than we do for God we then are sinning.
What are your idols?
Idols can be anything. They can be xbox, phones, self, family, friends, sports, sleep, and even exercise. These things in themselves are not bad things.
But when “Good things get in the way of the Best thing then they become Bad things.” To see what your idols are where do you spend most of your time. What do you spend most of you energy on? Idolatry is also using God for your own purpose rather than God using you. So many times we look at God as an object that when we need something we go to God. We don’t truly live our lives in accordance with what God has already called us too.
The only thing that deserves our worship is God. God created everything and holds everything together. Why would we not worship him. People in biblical times were worshiping rocks, birds, stones, and men, but we worship phones (metal/ plastic), celebrity/ athletes (men), and even thoughts of ourselves.
There is still idolatry today its just not in the form of a golden calf or as obvious as everybody meeting in the middle of town to bow down to the king.
Those of us who are saved are free from God’s wrath but that does not mean that we should live in sin. We still need to worship God and when we are saved we have all the more reason to worship God because we have a relationship with him.
Romans 1:24–32 ESV
24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen. 26 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. Romans 1:24–25 ESV
24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.
rom. 1:24-2
Whenever people act as if there is no absolute truth then people try to find this in anything that will please them. They start to find different things to feel the void in their lives. Sin always snowballs. If someone starts a life of sin they will eventually lead to a greater sin. Take David for instance. He started with lust, then went to adultery, then it escalated to murder. The crazy thing about David is all of these sins happened while he was a Christian.
God also punished David for his sin. This punishment was him losing his child and also losing many wars after this happened. God chastens Christians who are living in sin. God whoops Christians who are in sin.
When unsaved people start dabbling in sin and start ignoring the calling of Holy Spirit in their lives; they then reject God.
The greatest sin that man can ever commit is rejection of God.
The greatest sin that man could ever commit is .
This makes it that much more urgent to listen to God when he starts to convict you of salvation. The Holy Spirit is
When unsaved people start dabbling in sin their hearts start to become hardened to the Gospel. When hardened to the Gospel salvation become more and more difficult. This is one of the reasons when Jesus start calling you to salvation Satan tries to get you to ignore the call. The more you resist the Holy Spirit the closer you get towards Hell.
Rom. 1:26-
Romans 1:26–27 ESV
26 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27 and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.
When people start sinning the truth that God has given them is then morphed and changed into a lie. They start partaking in things that are unnatural and opposite of the way God intended things to be. Satan can never create anything only morph and twist what God has already made good.
Homosexuality is one of the main topics in today’s culture and this is completely opposed to what God has originally commanded. God made male and female this is natural and good. Satan twist that to be male and male and female and female.
Today’s culture is not the only culture to deal with homosexuality it has been around since before the flood. But just because it has been around for a long time doesn’t make it right. The bible explicitly calls this an act that is subject to God’s Wrath. While homosexuality is not the most hurtful of sins as compared to mass murder, it is the most arrogant and rebellious sin against a Holy God.
Being homosexual is not the unforgivable sin. While living in that lifestyle there are punishment for that sin and if you die while you are living in that lifestyle then you go to Hell but there is still hope that homosexuals will come to the a point of salvation.
1 Corinthians 6:9–11 ESV
9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
1 Cor.
All sinners who do not receive salvation will also endure God’s Wrath.
Who all receives God’s Wrath?
Romans 1:28–32 ESV
This is one of the scarier verses in the entire Bible. Those who continue in sin and continue to ignore the calling of the Holy Spirit then God will let their minds be cast over towards evil. Their minds will be not on the things of God, which are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, but rather sinful hurtful desires of the flesh.
The further we get away from God when we are lost the more we start to resemble the opposite of God.
These people also know of the things of God and know that they if they continue in these things that they will eventually die and go to Hell they still continue in doing them. They also approve of others who are abiding in the same sins.
God’s Wrath makes it all the more important that we share the Gospel with everyone that we meet. Going back to the end of last week.
Romans 1:17–18 ESV
17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.” 18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.
Romans 1:16–17 ESV
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”
The unrighteous have no chance of salvation unless they are told of the Gospel. The people in this room tonight have no chance of salvation except through the gospel. If people do not hear the Gospel then they are condemned to Hell. We are the options that God has chosen for his plan of salvation to be spread throughout the world.
Rom. 1:16-17
This seems extremely harsh to think about the people that are in a third world country who have have heard of the Gospel. Since they have not heard then they are under the Wrath of God because God has displayed himself enough in the World that People should be looking at who created it.
We on the other hand are called to share the Gospel with all we come in contact with, from the people here in our closest vicinity to those in third world countries that have not heard of the Gospel.
We are called to .
Matthew 28:19–20 ESV
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Matthew 28:
On the other hand those who have heard the Gospel and do not respond to the Gospel are actively deny the grace of God.
