INTRODUCTION
ILL- Things that we call accidents that aren’t
-Car wreck while texting.
-Fall on ice- Why are you walking on the ice?
-Bit by a dog that you trapped to pet.
Sometimes good things happen by accident.
ILL- David capping a water bottle on a flip.
He was trying to get it to land like Abel- stand it up.
Cool thing- but it was an accident- it was not on purpose.
Fulfilled prophesy proves that the cross was planned for in advance by God.
READ ;
When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic. But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom, so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” This was to fulfill the Scripture which says,
“They divided my garments among them,
and for my clothing they cast lots.”
So the soldiers did these things,

After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.” A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
Since it was the day of Preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him. But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water. He who saw it has borne witness—his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth—that you also may believe. For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken.” And again another Scripture says, “They will look on him whom they have pierced.”

Set Up
Jesus had on his mind while on the cross.
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?
they shall come and proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn, that he has done it.
they shall come and proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn,
that he has done it.
“He has done it”= He has finished it.

4 Planned Aspects of the Cross
1. Forsaken (22:1)
1. Forsaken (22:1)
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?
Because he took on sin- and sin separates us from God.
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
He was forsaken so we could be rescued.
Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel. 4 In you our fathers trusted; they trusted, and you delivered them. 5 To you they cried and were rescued; in you they trusted and were not put to shame.
Yet you are holy,
enthroned on the praises of Israel.
In you our fathers trusted;
they trusted, and you delivered them.
To you they cried and were rescued;
in you they trusted and were not put to shame.
Father’s trusted= Salvation of Old Testament was in the faith in the coming of the Messiah.
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2 For by it the people of old received their commendation.

Therefore from one man, and him as good as dead, were born descendants as many as the stars of heaven and as many as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore.
Therefore from one man, and him as good as dead, were born descendants as many as the stars of heaven and as many as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore.
Delivered and Rescued (22:4-5)
2. Crushed (22:6)
2. Crushed (22:6)
But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by mankind and despised by the people.
But I am a worm and not a man,
scorned by mankind and despised by the people.
Worm- Hebrew word was used almost exclusively for a type of worm that was crushed to extract a crimson dye. It was called the tola. Literal translation of scarlet is “splendor of the tola”.
Tola is what ate the manna in the wilderness
Produced scarlet dye for the curtains in tabernacle.
2 Samuel in speaking of their wealth says that the women were dressed in scarlet.
Jesus was the worm that was crushed for God’s people.
Crushed for transgressions.
But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.
But he was pierced for our transgressions;
he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
and with his wounds we are healed.
Side Pierced
And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn.
“And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn.
3. Execution (22:14-18)
3. Execution (22:14-18)
I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint; my heart is like wax; it is melted within my breast; my strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to my jaws; you lay me in the dust of death. For dogs encompass me; a company of evildoers encircles me; they have pierced my hands and feet— I can count all my bones— they stare and gloat over me; they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.
I am poured out like water,
and all my bones are out of joint;
my heart is like wax;
it is melted within my breast;
my strength is dried up like a potsherd,
and my tongue sticks to my jaws;
you lay me in the dust of death.
For dogs encompass me;
a company of evildoers encircles me;
they have pierced my hands and feet—
I can count all my bones—
they stare and gloat over me;
they divide my garments among them,
and for my clothing they cast lots.
Bones out of joint- but not broken.
He keeps all his bones; not one of them is broken.
Tongue sticks to jaws (I thirst)
They gave me poison for food, and for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink.
They gave me poison for food,
and for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink.
We don’t understand thirst in our culture.
ILL- Malawi- New well in Kalulu- saving hours of hard labor for women in this village.
Crucifixion.
For dogs encompass me; a company of evildoers encircles me; they have pierced my hands and feet—
Public Execution
I can count all my bones— they stare and gloat over me;
I can count all my bones—
they stare and gloat over me;
And again another Scripture says, “They will look on him whom they have pierced.”
And again another Scripture says, “They will look on him whom they have pierced.”
they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.
they divide my garments among them,
and for my clothing they cast lots.

Dividing Garments (23-24)
Four guards that were assigned to Jesus were dividing up the five pieces of clothing.
Why is this detailed given to us? Lots of debate throughout church history.
4. Salvation (22:27)
4. Salvation (22:27)
All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the LORD, and all the families of the nations shall worship before you.
All the ends of the earth shall remember
and turn to the Lord,
and all the families of the nations
shall worship before you.
Ends of the Earth- not just for Israel- He dies for all.
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
For so the Lord has commanded us, saying, “ ‘I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.’ ”
For so the Lord has commanded us, saying,
“ ‘I have made you a light for the Gentiles,
that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.’ ”
We are called to take the name of Jesus to the ends of the earth.
We are called to repentance \
Turn to the Lord= repentance./ surrender
CONCLUSION
The cross was God’s plan for our salvation.
It was on purpose because it was the only way.
Salvation does not happen by accident.
Have you accepted God’s gift of salvation through Jesus Christ?
