Introduction
Greetings…
We have been studying the theme “God By Name” wherein we have examined several Hebrew names of God with the hopes of drawing closer to Him by understanding Him better.
As we have seen each name gives us more insight into who God is and His characteristics.
Today we will be looking at God’s name in Hebrew “Adonai.”
This name for God is first found in .
2 But Abram said, “O Lord God, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?”
The combination here of Adonai & Yahwey is actually found 292 other times in the Old Testament as well.
In total the name Adonai is connected with God, as His name, 395 times.
In many translations the word LORD in all capital letters indicates the name Yahwey whereas the lower case “(L)ord” indicates the name Adonai.
1 After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.” 2 But Abram said, “O Lord God, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?”
So why is it important to know our Creator as Adonai?
First off…
What Does Adonai Mean?
What Does Adonai Mean?
Defining the word.
Defining the word.
The root of the word “adonai” is “adon” and means “lord, master, owner” i.e. one who has authority over another.
When used with humans we see it used for a number of different uses.
Master over slaves.
2 The Lord was with Joseph, and he became a successful man, and he was in the house of his Egyptian master. 3 His master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord caused all that he did to succeed in his hands.
Husbands over wives.
2 He lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing in front of him. When he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them and bowed himself to the earth 3 and said, “O Lord, if I have found favor in your sight, do not pass by your servant.
12 So Sarah laughed to herself, saying, “After I am worn out, and my lord is old, shall I have pleasure?”
Owners of property.
24 He bought the hill of Samaria from Shemer for two talents of silver, and he fortified the hill and called the name of the city that he built Samaria, after the name of Shemer, the owner of the hill.
Titles for one in a position of authority like angels.
Gen
18 And Lot said to them, “Oh, no, my lords.
When pertaining to God however, the word “Adonai” is akin to the name “Elohim.”
In other words, when this plural word is connected to a singular verb it takes the form of a singular with a plural meaning.
Thus when Adonai is used, like the name elohim, it is referring to the Godhead…Father, Son, & Spirit.

Understanding the God’s name as Adonai helps us understand our relationship with God.
So…
Why Is This Name Significant?
Why Is This Name Significant?
God’s complete ownership is revealed.
God’s complete ownership is revealed.
The Lord God owns everything, not some things, not most things, everything.
1 The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein,
14 Behold, to the Lord your God belong heaven and the heaven of heavens, the earth with all that is in it.
8 The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, declares the Lord of hosts.
10 For every beast of the forest is mine, the cattle on a thousand hills.
This means…
God is our owner.
God is our owner.
We don’t always like to think in these terms, but God is our Master or Owner.
However, when we obey the gospel, we stop being slaves of Satan and become slaves of God.
22 For he who is called in the Lord while a slave is the Lord’s freedman. Likewise he who is called while free is Christ’s slave.
16 Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God’s slaves.
22 But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life.
1 Masters, treat your bondservants justly and fairly, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven.
Why in the world would we want to trade one owner for the other?
Why would we want God as our Master or Owner instead of Satan?
God delivered salvation for each of us.
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people,
God teaches us how to access that salvation.
17 This is what the Lord, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel says: I am Yahweh your God, who teaches you for your benefit, who leads you in the way you should go.
12 training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, 13 waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ,
In our weakness God provides mercy & comfort.
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort,

Summary
You see, we have never been our own master (; ) which is humbling in and of itself.
Adonai purchased us with the blood of Christ () that we may be “sons of God” (), and slaves to God’s righteousness ().

In and some 394 times after God is explaining to you and I who we want our master to be.
We can either have Love or Lies, I choose “love.”
Invitation
1 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; 2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent,
32 “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven.
8 in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.
1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
