Whats the Gospel?
Whats the Gospel?
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.”
Romans
We have talked in times past about different misconceptions in the bible.
The one we last discussed was probably when we talked about truth.
I know I myself have said it and I’m guessing you have as well
I have been raised in the truth
Our church has truth
I am so glad I have truth
And we speak as though truth is some kind of doctrine or religion
We use it as if its a teaching that we teach
But when we look to the word of God we realize something a little different
The bible is very clear, Jesus himself said it like this
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
When we begin to talk about the truth and when we use sayings talking about truth I hope they sound a little like this
I have been raised in Jesus
Our church has Jesus
I am so glad I have Jesus
Because Jesus is the way the truth and the life.
There is another saying that we hear all the time that I believe we are really good at saying but maybe don’t really get it 100 percent accurate.
Have you ever asked someone this question:
What is the Gospel?
I know most people know what the Gospel is but how many times have you heard them answer with “its the good news”
Yes you are right but what is the good news?
Well lets us know what the good news is.
Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you—unless you believed in vain.
For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He was seen by Cephas, then by the twelve. After that He was seen by over five hundred brethren at once, of whom the greater part remain to the present, but some have fallen asleep. After that He was seen by James, then by all the apostles. Then last of all He was seen by me also, as by one born out of due time.
For I am the least of the apostles, who am not worthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me. Therefore, whether it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed.
I Corinthians 15:1-11
Now when I ask you what is the Gospel, all of us can answer well its found in I corinthians 15.
It is the death burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
And Yes that is some good news.
With out the Gospel we have no hope
With out the Gospel we have no life
With out the Gospel we have no power
And the greatest part about it is
It’s for you and its for you and its for you and its for me.
For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”
Paul was not one who walked with Jesus while he was on the earth.
Paul did not have an encounter with Jesus until after Jesus was crucified and already ascended up into heaven.
Thats why says that Paul received this good news.
He did not get the benefit of walking with Jesus like Matthew, Mark, and John
He was not taught by the greatest teacher to ever walk this earth
Paul was saved after Jesus was risen Pauls conversion happens starting at
Jesus has already been crucified and the ascension takes place in
So the revelation of the Gospel was very personal to Paul
And He makes mention of it when he says that he received it
That is something that we can get excited about
We are just like Paul, we did not get to walk this earth with Jesus
We did not get to sit at his feet while he taught and told parables
But we can receive the Good News of Jesus Christ
We can understand the Gospel Of Christ
It is our link to salvation
It is our hope
It is our get out of jail free card ( if you play monopoly)
It is the good news.
The Death, Burial, and Resurrection is the Gospel
You see the Tabernacle of Moses was the perfect example of the Gospel
When you walked into the tabernacle the first thing you came to was the alter of burnt offering
It is there that the animal is killed and the blood first begins to be shed
This is a picture of the cross or the death
From the Alter they move to the Laver of Water
As they begin to wash the blood mixes with the water
This is a picture of baptism or burial
Just like the blood and the water mix at the laver of water
When we are buried with Christ at baptism we see the blood and the name mixed together
Then as they move into the Holy of Holies its there that the priest will begin to sprinkle the blood on the mercy seat
Its then that the glory of the Lord shows up
Its referred to at times as the Shekinah Glory
Its in the Holy of Holies that God shows up
We would look at this as the resurrection or the in filling of the Holy Ghost
Let me give one more example in the bible of the Gospel
When the children of Israel where getting ready to be delivered out of Egypt
What was the first thing they were to do
The bible tells us that they were to put blood on the door post so the death angle would pass by them
It was first the blood or death
From there they were to head to the red sea
Second it was the water or burial
And after the water they were able to go into the promised land or
the promise of God
And after the water they were
We would call this the resurrection
The Cross is the heart of the Gospel
The Cross is the heart of the Gospel
The blood is the life of the Gospel
The name is the Power of the Gospel
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.”
