Intro: Telling a story does not always happen in order. We tell the important things out of order or for emphasis.
I. David rules over Israel in Jerusalem
A. David is made king over Israel
v.1-5 David is made king over all Israel
The case for David as King (from Dale Ralph Davis)
Relationship - (v.1b)
Leadership - (v.2a)
Promise - (v.2b)
The king is the shepherd of Israel
Characteristics of a shepherd
Faithfulness
Justice
Love
Shepherds were with their flock - they ruled through their relationship and proximity with those in their care
King as prince - there is a greater power - a better Sovereign
Jesus is the true King of Israel. He has the relationship - he was born, as a baby, born of woman. He is the true leader, guiding and leading through is life. He was given the promises and fulfilled them.
Philippians 2:5–11 (ESV) 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
B. David takes Jerusalem
v.6-10 Jerusalem is taken
Jebusites
People who lived in the mountains surrounding Jerusalem
Originally, they were defeated by Judah (Judges 1:8)
Jerusalem
A city with high walls - the reference to the blind and lame warding off Israel is because they could throw rocks over the wall at any attackers
This fulfills the promise given to Abraham in Gen 15 an 800 year fulfillment in the making
They go through the water system
II. 2 ways David consolidates power
A. Foreign Aid from Tyre
v.11-12 King of Tyre honors David
Probably did not happen right after he took Jerusalem
It is added here to show how Jerusalem was rebuilt
B. Alliances through relationships
v.13-16 David takes women
Concubines and wives
Value women (as image bearers and value yourself)
Don't be a concubine
This is a violation of Deuteronomy 17:14–17 (ESV) 14 “When you come to the land that the Lord your God is giving you, and you possess it and dwell in it and then say, ‘I will set a king over me, like all the nations that are around me,’ 15 you may indeed set a king over you whom the Lord your God will choose. One from among your brothers you shall set as king over you. You may not put a foreigner over you, who is not your brother. 16 Only he must not acquire many horses for himself or cause the people to return to Egypt in order to acquire many horses, since the Lord has said to you, ‘You shall never return that way again.’ 17 And he shall not acquire many wives for himself, lest his heart turn away, nor shall he acquire for himself excessive silver and gold.
This is not the end of David's failures as it pertains to women and sexual relations
Bathsheba
His son rapes his daughter
The rapist is killed by David's son (the brother of his raped daughter)
The murderous son made a coup and took David's place as king
To show this, he took David's concubines and slept with them in public
David's other son will have hundreds of wives and concubines and through their influence, he stops worshiping Yahweh, the nation is split, and eventually led into exile
III. David demonstrates his power
v.17-25 David defeats the Philistines
2 Attackes
Front Attack at Baal-perazim
The Philistines were defeated by God bursting through them like a flood
Baal-perazim means "lord of bursting out" (Illus - people cutting down above ground pools)
The Philistines left their idols/gods (they were later burned in 1 Chronicles 14:12)
Rear Attack while God goes before them
God went before them which was known by the sound in the trees
David routs the Philistines because God is the Warrior who goes before him
God is the Leveler and the Warrior
In these attacks, David still goes to the Lord for direction
