Mistakes?
“Insanity is doing the same things over and over again and expecting different results” Anynomous
Misunderstandings are natural
people, situations, conversations
However, if we don’t correct misunderstandings they can cause problems.
“Insanity is doing the same things over and over again and expecting different results” Anonymous
The danger of misunderstandings is never greater than when we misunderstand God or his plan for saving us.
Biblical:
Mark wrote his Gospel to teach and correct the understanding people had about Jesus and his ministry
However, not everyone understands Jesus correctly
Many affirmed the power of Jesus, but failed to accept his power as coming from God
This is a path with a dangerous destination
We must not only understand that Jesus has authority and power (last week) but we must understand the source of that power.
Subject:
What are the dangers of misunderstanding the source of Jesus’ power?
Textual:
Mark 3:22–30 ESV
22 And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem were saying, “He is possessed by Beelzebul,” and “by the prince of demons he casts out the demons.” 23 And he called them to him and said to them in parables, “How can Satan cast out Satan? 24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25 And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. 26 And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but is coming to an end. 27 But no one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man. Then indeed he may plunder his house. 28 “Truly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the children of man, and whatever blasphemies they utter, 29 but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin”— 30 for they were saying, “He has an unclean spirit.”

Narrative:

Popularity (20)
Jesus returns home - likely Simon and Andrew’s house - roof fixed?
crowd comes again - such that they can’t eat
Family reaction (21)
Jesus’ family hear of Jesus’ location and come to seize him
crowd comes again - such that they can’t eat
Jesus’ family hear of Jesus’ location and come to seize him
“He is out of his mind”
Scribes = experts in the law (v. 22) from Jerusalem
In response to Jesus’ healings - primarily exhorcisms
Acknowledge Jesus’ power but call it evil
“He is possessed by Beelzebul”
“by the prince of demons he casts out the demons”
Jesus responds with parables (23-27)
he called his opposition to him
he taught using parables
Satan attacking himself
illogical - satan casting out satan?
If...
Kingdom divided - cannot stand
House divided - cannot stand
Satan risen up against himself - cannot stand - coming to an end
BUT Satan’s kingdom is under attack
Strong man = satan
his goods = people under the control of satan
can’t plunder the goods unless strong man is bound
bind the strong man
then plunder his house (freedom)
Isaiah 49:24–26 ESV
24 Can the prey be taken from the mighty, or the captives of a tyrant be rescued? 25 For thus says the Lord: “Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken, and the prey of the tyrant be rescued, for I will contend with those who contend with you, and I will save your children. 26 I will make your oppressors eat their own flesh, and they shall be drunk with their own blood as with wine. Then all flesh shall know that I am the Lord your Savior, and your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.”
Jesus teaches on forgiveness (28-30)
Jesus teaches on forgiveness (28-30)
“Truly I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the children of man, and whatever blasphemies they utter...”
Jesus declared that He had power to forgive sins on earth ()
“BUT, whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness...”
“BUT, whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness...”
“guilty of an eternal sin”
Isaiah 5:20 ESV
20 Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!
Because they were saying “He has an unclean spirit”
Because they were saying “He has an unclean spirit”

Application:

What are the dangers of misunderstanding the source of Jesus’ power?
Opportunity: It can happen to anybody (20-22, 31)
family and Scribes
clear experience with Jesus and his power
Free taste - Baskin Robbins
Why do you think those who saw Jesus’ ministry in person still misunderstood His source of power? How can we avoid this problem?
1)
2) Have you been held hostage by Satan/evil? Do you know others who are in this dangerous situation? Pray for God’s help, because only He can free a person from the bondage evil has upon them.
3) What sins have you/others committed that seem “unforgivable”? This week, we discovered that in a person’s earthly lifetime, there is hope for forgiveness. Unless we’ve concluded that there is no hope or forgiveness in Jesus and hardened our heart toward the grace of the Gospel, our sins can be forgiven. Ask Jesus to forgive you today.
Confusion: It makes Jesus the enemy instead of the hero (23-27)
Jesus is against Satan not his ally
Jesus is our only hope to battle Satan
Isaiah 49:24–26 ESV
24 Can the prey be taken from the mighty, or the captives of a tyrant be rescued? 25 For thus says the Lord: “Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken, and the prey of the tyrant be rescued, for I will contend with those who contend with you, and I will save your children. 26 I will make your oppressors eat their own flesh, and they shall be drunk with their own blood as with wine. Then all flesh shall know that I am the Lord your Savior, and your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.”
Capture the flag
Have you been held hostage by Satan/evil? Do you know others who are in this dangerous situation? Pray for God’s help, because only He can free a person from the bondage evil has upon them.
Destruction: It can harden your heart to the only hope for forgiveness (28-30)
Jesus can forgive sins (2.12-20)
But only if we don’t close him off
Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is not a confession (words)…it is not a confusion (doubts)...BUT it is the conclusion (determined firmness of the heart)
Isaiah 5:20 ESV
20 Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!
Cave exploring - under water passage - too late to turn back
What sins have you/others committed that seem “unforgivable”? This morning, we discovered that in a person’s earthly lifetime, there is hope for forgiveness. Unless we’ve concluded that there is no hope or forgiveness in Jesus and hardened our heart toward the grace of the Gospel, our sins can be forgiven. Ask Jesus to forgive you today.
