Spiritual Gifts

Chair Bible p. 959
Offering:
Giving inconsistent. 61,500 need just under 79,000. 17,500 shortfall for 6 weeks or a total of 105,000.
Calling on every member to give consistently until the end of March as they plan to give for the remainder of the year.
We will adjust our budget at that time.
Worship attendance is up…GG attendance has soared. We have multiple needs that we have not yet addressed. Having to reduce the budget will have an effect on our ministry as a church.
Purpose.
Sermon..Chair Bible p. 959.
Multiple comments as it relates to our study through the next few chapters. Practice good hermeneutics(interpretation) both of 1 Corinthians and the whole counsel of God.
A few disclaimers...
Parkwood is not a pentecostal church. We do not believe that at salvation, the baptism of the Holy Spirit will evidence by the sign of speaking in tongues.
2 Continuums. Cessationist and Continuationist (does not necessarily mean you are pentecostal). Causious continuationist and nuanced cessationist.
Spiritual gifts cannot and must not become a point of division for this church. Paul’s issue with Corinth was the fact that some of the gifts had become a point of contention. I am not going to avoid the subject out of fear nor am I going to allow this subject to become a matter of divide.
Lordship of Christ (12:3)
Common good (12:7)
Common good (12:7)
One Body, many members (12:14)
Love defines our worship and use of gifts (13)
Decent and in order (14:40)
1 Corinthians 12:1 ESV
1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed.
Matter primarily relates to public worship and spiritual gifts.

Main Idea: The Holy Spirit graciously gives gifts to each individual in the body of Christ for the common good.

The Holy Spirit graciously gives gifts to each individual in the body of Christ.

1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. 2 You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led. 3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit.
No one can say and keep on saying (present active indicative) that Jesus is Lord except in the Holy Spirit.
What is the connection from v. 1 to v. 3.
The Holy Spirit is the source of the confession of Jesus as Lord
The Holy Spirt is the source of spiritual gifts.
Spiritual gifts are to be exercised under the lordship of Christ.
Exercising spiritual gifts in the body of Christ communicates that Christ is Lord (not wow she is a deep Christian or wow this is an exciting church)
Spiritual gifts bear witness to Christ.
John 15:26 ESV
26 “But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me.
In v. 4 and following we see the source and nature of the gifts...
Notice the parallel nature of the v. 4-6, trinitarian explanation.
4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit;
the word varieties has to with difference and distribution…different gifts (charisma: grace gift), same source=Holy Spirit.
5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord;
service-diakonia ministry
same Lord—master.
The ministry of the servant is carried out according to the gifts from the Lord, their master, the One whom they serve.
6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.
activities=effect or carrying into effect, implementation.
Gift not simply something that you have, something that the Lord God empowers(cause to function) in every believer for the purpose of implementation.
7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit ...
each and every believer is bestowed a clear indication of the Spirit
Every individual believer is gifted by the Holy Spirit.
each is a member of the body with gifts that match their function in the body.
Must be considered with sober judgment and perceived necessity.
Romans 12:3–5 ESV
3 For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. 4 For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, 5 so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.
Illus: I have heard people say, Parkwood would fall apart without __(person)___.
Parkwood will stumble and limp without each member realizing and exercising their gifts.
Parkwood (any local church) will fall apart without the members as a whole realizing and exercising their gifts with humility. Grieving and quenching the Spirit.
Each member of body is gifted and each member is necessary.
Why?....

The Holy Spirit graciously gives gifts to each individual in the body of Christ for the common good.

7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.
What is the common good?
The word translated common good here is the same one that was used in 6:12 and 10:23 for that which “is beneficial” in the repeated phrase “not everything is beneficial.” (Ciampa 571)
Gifts are given for the good of the community, that is, build up the people of God. (Gardner 532)
Clarified in Eph. 4
Ephesians 4:15–16 ESV
15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.
Common good is the growth of the body built up in love.
The body is built up when each part is working properly…exercising their gifts by the power of the Spirit.
Follows with a representative list of spiritual gifts
8 For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit,
Interesting that he begins with gifts of the Holy Spirit that in their flesh they struggled… see 1 Cor. 2:12-13
These gifts are evidenced one on one in biblical counsel and encouragement
evidenced in a wider context in the body through teaching.
9 to another faith by the same Spirit,
Not referring to saving faith, all are saved by faith
Mountain moving faith…,
to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit,
not the power to heal all diseases but instances of actual healing. Illus: Paul healed healing of man at Lystra. others on his team who were not healed.
James 5:15 ESV
15 And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.
Illus: instances of healing.
Illus: instances of healing by the laying on of hands of elders.
10 to another the working of miracles,
God doing miracles through Paul, then the sons of Sceva trying to emulate and the evil spirits leap on them.
Why healing and miracles? attest to the gospel.
Why few healings and miracles in our culture? not necessary or not a help but a distraction in a rational age.
to another prophecy,
some mean preaching…proclaiming the Word of God
Others mean…speaking a message given to the prophet. A word from God.
We believe the Scripture is complete. God speaks through his sufficient Word.
to another the ability to distinguish between spirits,
Illus: Youth Pastor friend in high school lunch room.
Is what is being said and done from God? not easily wowed. Do not mean grumpy.
to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.
heard in their own language, many believe refers to ecstatic languages. We will deal with this more in depth when we get to Ch. 14.
Not an exclusive list…other texts.
1 Corinthians 12:28 ESV
28 And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues.
Romans 12:6–8 ESV
6 Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; 7 if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; 8 the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.
Ephesians 4:11–12 ESV
11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,
11 All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.

recognition that Jesus is Lord! Yes Lord.
Thelma Moss—love of Christ, gracious, tremendous memory for names. Lobby presence was a gift to all, especially the guests.

So What?

Am I exercising the gifts the Holy Spirit has graciously given me in the body of Christ?
Lordship of Christ (12:3)
Common good (12:7)
1 Peter 4:10–11 ESV
10 As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: 11 whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
When God is glorified in each of you as you use your gifts to serve one another, He is glorified in us as the body of Christ.

God has placed a great mission on every believer and on this congregation. He has placed us in a growing city with an open door to the nations.
Good stewards of God’s varied grace.
