John 3:5–8 KJV 1900
5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. 8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

The wind blows where it listeth…The wind blows wherever it wants…and you HEAR the SOUND THEROF: so is everyone that is born of the Spirit.
If Jesus said the wind blows and you see the leaves move, the we would know that someone had received the Holy Ghost because they moved under the power of the Holy Ghost
If he would have said the wind blows and you feel the breeze from it, then we would know someone received the Holy Ghost because they felt something.
Jesus said the wind blows and you hear the sound thereof. We know the sign is a sound.
The sign is a sound!!
So is EVERYONE that is born of the Spirit
Mark 16:16 KJV 1900
16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
Mark 16:16–17 KJV 1900
16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. 17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
2 points of emphasis of those that saved believers:
They will operate in the authority of the Name of Jesus
They will speak with New Tongues
The sign is a sound and the sound is other tongues
Luke 24:49 KJV 1900
49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.
Acts 1:10 NKJV
10 And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel,
Acts 1:4–5 KJV 1900
4 And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. 5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.
Acts 1:
the Holy Ghost
Ghost is simply the spirt of a departed one. The Holy Ghost is the Spirit of Jesus Christ.
—> The same spirit that raised Christ from the dead
Romans 8:11 KJV 1900
11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
Acts 1:12–14 KJV 1900
12 Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day’s journey. 13 And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James. 14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.
Acts 2:4 NKJV
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Acts 2:
Acts 10:44–46 KJV 1900
44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. 45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. 46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,
Acts 10:44-
Why tongues:
Proverbs 18:21 KJV 1900
21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue: And they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.
James 3:1–10 KJV 1900
1 My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation. 2 For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body. 3 Behold, we put bits in the horses’ mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. 4 Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth. 5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! 6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. 7 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: 8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. 9 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. 10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.
James 2:1–10 KJV 1900
1 My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons. 2 For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment; 3 And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool: 4 Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts? 5 Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him? 6 But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats? 7 Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called? 8 If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well: 9 But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors. 10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.
James 2:1-
James provides a summary of the power of the tongue:
James provides a summary of the power of the tongue:
If someone can tame their tongue, they can tame their entire being (vs. 2-4)
A ship can be turned by a small helm (vs. 4) just like the steering wheel can turn a huge car or truck.
God wants to control our entire being by controlling our tongue.
When you are filled with the Holy Ghost and speak in tongues, God takes control of your tongue and your entire spirit, soul and body and uses the tongue you used to curse with to now, bless God!
As the tongue is declared to be the most unruly member of the body…it is the most difficult part to tame…if God can control the tongue…the has the rest of you!
There are three categories of Speaking in Tongues
There are three categories of Speaking in Tongues
When you first receive the Holy Ghost, you speak in tongues as the sign of the spirit birth ()
1 Corinthians 14:16–17 KJV 1900
16 Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest? 17 For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.
Praying in tongues in prayer - is just for you! You don’t know the Will of God but He starts speaking in tongues through you and you may not know what He is saying but He gives you strength to go through whatever you have to go through
Gift of tongues - Used in the church. Someone speaks in tongues with a stammering lips and unknown tongues to the people.
This is what Paul is addressing in …these are people that have already been filled with the Holy Ghost. (the book of 1 Corinthians begins with Paul stating “unto the church of God which is at Corinth).
He is addressing issues within the church…Chapters 12 through 14 he is dealing with edifying the church.
The issue he is addressing that speaking in tongues to the church is not edifying the body unless there is an interpretation.
That doesn’t mean that we can’t speak in tongues in the church…it means that if the body is being addressed, then there should be an interpretation so that the body can be strengthened.
1 Corinthians 14:2 NKJV
2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.
1 Corinthians 14:3 NKJV
3 But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men.
1 Corinthians 14:4 NKJV
4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.
