James 1:19–27 KJV 1900
19 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: 20 For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. 21 Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. 22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. 23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: 24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. 25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. 26 If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain. 27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.
James 1:19–26 KJV 1900

your attitude (19-21)

James 1:19–21 KJV 1900
19 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: 20 For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. 21 Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.
James calles the readers to attention by his statement take note of this, which the KJV omits.
Let every Person be...
Quick to hear..someone who spends all his time talking will not hear what anyone else has to say
Slow to speak
Slow to anger..a restraint on anger is demanded anger will close the mind to Gods truth
one comentater says the following..” careless talkers may easily become fierce controversialists and a fiercely argumentative attitude is not conductive to humbel reception of truth.
rules of comunication
Be honest
keep current
Act don’t react
Attack the problum not the person
Act don’t react
what anger does…(v20)
James 1:20 KJV 1900
20 For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.
Does not produce righteouusness of God
Does not produce righteouusness of God
the verse gives the reasoning that lies behind the privious verse. Anger does not produce the richous life that God desires.
anger is not an attitude that causes richousness to flourish. we will deal with this in more detail later in the book
James 3:18 ESV
18 And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

James 1:21 KJV 1900
21 Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.
James 1:21 CSB
21 Therefore, ridding yourselves of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent, humbly receive the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
I am going to read the NKJV for clarity on this verse
James 1:21 NKJV
21 Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
We are to lay aside all moral unclenness and the overflow of wikedness!
ll filthiness and rampant wickedness
all filthiness and rampant wickedness
all filthiness and overflow of wickedness,
and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
In order to receive the Word of God one needs to get rid of moral filth
receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
the greek word here is ἀποτίθημι appo-teeth-em-ee and means to completly disregard and get rid of it
Hebrews 12:1 KJV 1900
1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
He
we must get rid of moral filth as we would get rid of repulsive smells or things.
furthermore we must receive the Word with humility and meekness. this does not mean week but that we should be submissive not rebellious. only in this spirit can an individual fully receive God’s truth.
James here is not calling for initial acceptance of salvation but for a full intelligent groth in your spiritual life. This is known because the word implanted in you is used James simply uses the phrase “which can save you to remind the reader of the saving truth the word of God has.

Your actions (22-27)

James 1:22–27 KJV 1900
James 1:22–26 KJV 1900
James instructs the readers to put the word into practice do what the Bible says don’t just read it and move on.
It is not enough to just listen to the word or even read it those who think they have favor with God by just listening to truth are deceiving themselves.
How do we apply this?
those who come to church, and listen to the preaching of the word and think they have done there spiritual duity and their life does not change through the preaching or there own personal reading.
The responsibility of those who hear is far greater than that of those who have never herd. if they do not combine doing with hearing they place themselves in a vulnerable position
The call to do what it says lies at the center of all that james teaches. It sums up the message of the whole book: Put into practice what you profess to believe.
you deceive yourself
Annalogy
in verse 24 james gives an analogy of what this is like
James 1:24 ESV
24 For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like.
James 1:24 KJV 1900
24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.
James 1:23–24 KJV 1900
23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: 24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.
James 1:23–24 ESV
23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. 24 For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like.
ames 1:24
Imagine looking at yourself and seeing your hear messed up a shirt button not buttoned, ext. then walk away from the mirror and ignore it because we don’t see it anymore.
This is what James is illistrating and the same if we are told something in the Bible but don’t change our life.
James 1:25 KJV 1900
25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
James 1:25–26 ESV
25 But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing. 26 If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless.
James 1:25 ESV
25 But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.
The perfect law here refers to the word of God. James is saying here don’t just be one who heares what the word of God says then forgets it. But act upon what the word of God says the one who acts upon what it says will be blessed.
James 1:26–27 KJV 1900
26 If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain. 27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.
J
James directly deals with speach here. by his satement “if a man thinks he is religious without controlling his toungue hie religion is worthless”
This deals with the person that not excersize control over his speach.
How speach offends is not indicated whether it be by the cutting criticism of others by uncleanness by dishonesty or by other ways His uncontrolled tongue reveals that “his religion is worthless”
this person has been playing the part of a religious person and has convinced himself he is while scripture says “he decives himself”
Application
Rumor Slander and Gosip
Rummor-any unverified speach
Slander-False or malicious information with the intent to cause harm
Gosip: Sensational talk passed on because of its “juicy nature, weather true, rumor or slander
James 4:11 KJV 1900
11 Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge.
Sensational talk passed on because of its “juicy nature, weather true, rumor or slander
Proverbs 11:13 KJV 1900
13 A talebearer revealeth secrets: But he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.
Proverbs 16:28 KJV 1900
28 A froward man soweth strife: And a whisperer separateth chief friends.
Proverbs 26:20 KJV 1900
20 Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: So where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth.
The Bible comands the CHurch to deal with it
Titus 3:10 KJV 1900
10 A man that is an heretick after the first and second admonition reject;
2 Timothy 3:10 ESV
10 You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness,
Shut it down
Refuse it-What if we hated it
Rebuke it-Dont even listen to it,
Redirect it -point the individual to Christ
Gosip is...
nasty
destroys CHurches
the divil loves it
instead of being passive and tolerationg remove it.
Christ delt with the so called “religious people” throughout his ministery
James however encompeses what it means to be a folower of CHrist..
The “religion” that Christ acceps is that which exerts positive influence on one’s life. notice it does not give us a definition of religion instead it presents a concrete way if insisting that genuine religion is a life changeing forse.
Ones religion , then should be more than external it must spring from an inner spiritual reality that expresses itself in love to others and holiness before God.
James lists three things
to look after orphans
TO look after Widows
the verb used here “to look after” gives reference to visiting the sick this is not just a social call this is faith expressing itself through Love
to look after Widows
Galatians 5:6 KJV 1900
6 For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.
one who’s religion is genuine will avoid being poluted with the world this describes the total system of evil that pervades every sphere of human existence and is set in opposition to God and his richteouness
TO look after Widows
3. to keep yourself unstained by the World
Let me be clear, this statement “keep yourself unstained my the world” is not refeing to keeping a list of do’s and dont’s. but rather that the true believer will by there own desire live in a way that does not stain them by the world, the idea of being above reproach, and avoiding sin.
religion must consist superficial acts . It is not enough to listen to the statement of spiritual truth nor is it sufficient to engage in formal religious activity the person whose religious experience is genuine will put spiritual truth into practice and his life will be marked by love for others and holiness before God.

Application
Do you run from dangerous speech
Do you strive to remain unstained by the World
to keep yourself unstained by the World
But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty,
and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts,
he will be blessed in his doing.
If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless.
James 1:27 ESV
27 Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.
