Introduction:
Preparing to leave – all of the accumulated wisdom, you try to impart
WE DIDN’T READ IT, BUT LOOK AT THE LAST LINE OF CHAPTER 14. THIS HELPS US LOCATE WHERE JESUS WAS.

I) Remain in Jesus to Bear Fruit (vv. 1-8)

A. God warns us against being fruitless (vs. 2a, 6)
1. The setting: In view of the temple, with extravagant vines/grapes
2. Why? A picture of Israel a failed vineyard, left to decay (, )
ii. Warning for failing branches (vv. 2b, 6)
1. Jesus is repeating this warning to us: If we don’t bear fruit, we are cut off
2. APPLICATION: we go to church, know our bible; but do we bear fruit?
B. God Promises a Way to be Fruitful (vv. 4-5)
Galatians 5:22–24 ESV
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
2. Good news/bad news: If we don’t’ see these, self-examination (without needlessly scaring people)

2. Abiding in Christ means relating to Christ (vv. 4, 5, 8)

C. Remaining in Christ will yield this fruit
1. WE commune with Jesus by reading his word (see vs. 3)
2. We commune with Jesus in Prayer (see vs.7)
ii. God the vinedresser will increase the fruit (vs. 2b)
1. God is so committed to our growth that he will prune those in Christ!
2. EXAMPLE: “Ah-Tah-Fah-GEE”
3. APPLICATION:
a. Hard-to-love people teach us what love looks like
b. Losing a job, income, disappointment à Peace

II) Remain In Jesus’ Love to become obedient (vv. 9-17)

A. Jesus Commands us to Obey Him
1. We often pit love and obedience against each other
2. Love w/o obedience is subjective; obedience w/o love can be harsh
ii. No; obedience is an expression of love for God & Others
1. Repeatedly, Jesus ties love and obedience together (vv. 10, 12)
2. EXAMPLE:
B. God’s Love for us in Jesus motivates our Obedience
i.
1. Is God’s love conditional on obedience? (see vs. 10)
2. God: A judge? Police officer? Angry Parent?
3. If so – obedience feels like a burden
ii. God loves us as he loves Jesus (vs. 9, 15)
1. All of the love that our heavenly Father has for Jesus…he has for us
2. God loves us enough to reveal himself to us – not as servants, but friends
iii. God loves us as he sends Jesus to Lay down his life for us (vv. 13, 16)
1. God’s love would be put on full display, laying down his life for us
2. Obedience feels like a great joy
