Title: God moments
Theme: God moments can change our lives, guide our understand, and are confirmed by God and scripture.
Text: Matthew 17:1-9
ME: ORIENTATION: FIND COMMON GROUND WITH THE AUDIENCE
I am convinced that all of life is a journey. There is continuity to it, but it is not a straight line in my opinion. It is a relational journey where we get to know God better and our path of faith. Over the years I have noticed the building blocks from on location to another. What we learn and apply today will help us to prepare for tomorrow.
WE: IDENTIFICATION (MAKE IT CLEAR THAT YOU STRUGGLE)
Unfortunately we don’t always learn the lesson, apply the information or make the connection.
This is true of the story in the Gospel lesson today. Let us walk along with Jesus and Peter, John and James.
GOD: ILLUMINATION (THE GOAL IS TO RESOLVE THE TENSION

I. What is a God moment?

Have you ever experienced a God Moment in your life?

A. A moment of meeting God in the journey.

a. I ask a few friends what a God moment meant to them.
David Smither’s respond when he gave his heart and life over to Jesus
He was sitting in the kitchen with a fiend who was sharing the gospel and for hime he saw a picture of Jesus knocking at the door

B. All of life is spiritual

a. Lady taking my blood explained to me all of life is spiritual

C. A God moment is when God is making himself real through various means.

a. sometimes I think what is missing is our living in the moment with God.
b. living in this present moment.

II. Before the God moment is scripture.

A. Peter acknowledge that Jesus is the Christ, God’s son.

15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.

He says that Jesus doesn’t have to go to the cross.
Jesus rebukes him and next the text we had last week about being a cross bearer.
B. Jesus give a word

28 a Pronouncement Truly, I say to you,

b Status there are some standing here

c Characterization who will not taste death

d Ultimate until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”

28 Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”

III. The Story of Transfiguration

17 And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. (ESV)

A. day journey from Caesarea Philippi to Mount Hermon

Caesarea Philippi
Peter John and James are selected to make the trip
2 And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. (ESV)

B. Something happens

Experience — The speaker is describing someone or something undergoing or being affected by an action or event
Jesus changed
Face shone like sun shining or radiating of the face
Clothing were white like light
shining or radiating of the face
Transfiguration to change in a manner visible to others, be transfigured of Jesus, who took on the form of his heavenly glory ;
3 And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him (ESV)
* The inner circle of disciples witness this profound revelation of Jesus’ identity as well as his mission
God has a plan that James, John, and Peter were getting to see
This should transform their world view, the identity of Jesus revealed
The Law (Moses) and the Prophets (Elijah)
not one word will be removed until it is fulfilled.

C. Disciples reaction

4 And Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah. (ESV)
It is good to be here.
I will make three Tabernacles you, Moses, and Elijah.
I think the disciples are overwhelmed , thus Peter’s response

D. Another God Moment

5 He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the
cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” (ESV)
Peter’s reaction and now God speaks.
Ok, it is a full day.
They are reminded of Jesus being baptized
other events in the Old Testament with Moses
6 When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified. (ESV)

σφόδρα adv. of σφοδρός (Pind., Hdt. et al.) a very high point on a scale of extent, very (much), extremely, greatly

7 But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and have no fear. Matthew 17:7(ESV)

And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only. Matthew 17:8(ESV)
Verse 9 Jesus says don’t tell anyone until I am raised from the dead.
YOU: APPLICATION (TELL PEOPLE WHAT TO DO AND WHAT THEY HAVE HEARD)
Conclusion:
Live in the moment
all of life is spiritual
listen for the voice of God
Learn from what God shows you
This is how we should prepare for church, devotions, and life.
