Intro:

The past two weeks we have seen folks give their lives to Christ and experience the death and resurrection of Jesus in baptism as well as welcome believers “formally” to the family at T&C.
In both circumstances, we witnessed their confession before the church that “Jesus is Lord and Savior.” Here at T&C, we repeat that confession along with them in a spirit of unity.
While it’s never “run of the mill” or boring, we can get used to repeating that good confession and perhaps miss the universe-shaking power that is inherent in them.
To confess Christ as Lord and Savior is to name him before heaven and earth as your king.

Expectation that Jesus is the fulfillment of this promise.
But Jesus’ plan didn’t meet their expectations.
They didn’t get to choose what kind of King he would be.
31 Then Jesus began to tell them that the Son of Man must suffer many terrible things and be rejected by the elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law. He would be killed, but three days later he would rise from the dead. 32 As he talked about this openly with his disciples, Peter took him aside and began to reprimand him for saying such things. 33 Jesus turned around and looked at his disciples, then reprimanded Peter. “Get away from me, Satan!” he said. “You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, not from God’s.”

32 “Everyone who acknowledges me publicly here on earth, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. 33 But everyone who denies me here on earth, I will also deny before my Father in heaven.

11 This is a trustworthy saying: If we die with him, we will also live with him. 12 If we endure hardship, we will reign with him. If we deny him, he will deny us. 13 If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny who he is.

We don’t get to choose how Jesus is King.
Jesus demands to be king of my life in every respect. He must be at the center of my life.
He must be the form I pour my life into.

9 Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Phil. 2.9-11
Once we have made that declaration of the Lordship of Jesus, a lifestyle must follow.
23 Then he said to the crowd, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me.
34 Then, calling the crowd to join his disciples, he said, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me. 35 If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake and for the sake of the Good News, you will save it.
