Text: “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies” ( NIV).
Scripture Reading:
1 Corinthians 6:9–20 NKJV
9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God. 12 All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any. 13 Foods for the stomach and the stomach for foods, but God will destroy both it and them. Now the body is not for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14 And God both raised up the Lord and will also raise us up by His power. 15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a harlot? Certainly not! 16 Or do you not know that he who is joined to a harlot is one body with her? For “the two,” He says, “shall become one flesh.” 17 But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him. 18 Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. 19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.

Introduction

Introduction

When it comes to salvation we all know of Jesus role in that wonderful work.
He was the sacrifice for our sins.
1 John 2:2 NKJV
2 And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.
Intrestingly, Salvation is a work of God, all of God, His whole being, not just that of the work of the Son.
The Father was of course also invloved in this work.
John 3:16 NKJV
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
Basically The Father willed the plan, the Son fulfilled the Paln, but what about the Holy Spirit?
Where doers his work fit into salvation and what is His work?

You would not know about the Gospel if it were not for the Holy Spirit.

The only reason you know of the gospel is that it was preached to you, by a pastor, eveagelist, christian. You were preached to out of a bible you can read in your own laungage.
All this is only possible n d only exists because of the power that exists in the church. A power that comes from the Holy Spirit.
Non pentecost Power - no Church - no preaching.
Acts 1:8 NKJV
8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

The Holy Spirit convinced us of our need for salvation.

I. The Holy Spirit came into the world on the day of Pentecost to continue the work of Jesus Christ.
II. The Holy Spirit convinced us of our need for salvation (). The Holy Spirit convicts people of their sin. This conviction serves the same function for the soul that fever does for the body. Fever is not the illness; it is just a symptom of the illness. Fever is the body’s cry for a cure. The guilt we feel about our sin is God’s way of telling us that we have a problem that needs to be solved. Only Jesus Christ can solve it.

John 16:8–11 NKJV
8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 of sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; 11 of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

The Holy Spirit effected the new birth when we received Christ as Savior.

The Fathe Willed the Plan, the son fulfilled the plan, and the Holy Spirit effects the plan.
ie: makes it come to pass in our lives.
John 3:7–8 NKJV
7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
; ).
Titus 3:5 NKJV
5 not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit,
).
To use a simnple analogy:
The doctor prescribes the medicine.
jesus is the medicine.
The Holy Spiorit it the needle that puts the medicine into the patient.

The Holy Spirit gave us assurance of Adoption.

Romans 8:11–16 NKJV
11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you. 12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors—not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” 16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,
). God desires that we have assurance of our relationship with him, that we know him as our loving Father (). The joy of this assurance belongs to all believers who trust and obey the Spirit as he leads us in understanding God’s Word and in bringing our lives into harmony with God’s will.
God desires that we have assurance of our relationship with him, that we know him as our loving Father.
1 John 3:1–2 NKJV
1 Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. 2 Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.

The Spirit is God’s seal of ownership and his guarantee of our ultimate salvation from death and the grave.

Ephesians 1:13–14 NKJV
13 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.
The gift of the Holy Spirit is how God puts the official seal of his ownership on each believer. The presence of the Holy Spirit is the guarantee that he will rescue us from death and the grave and return us to the home of our heavenly Father.

The significance is that it shows a finished transaction.
It also sjows authencitity - official seal.

The Holy Spirit creates conflict with our sinful nature.

We all know that the Holy Spirit as a comforter
John 14:26 NKJV
26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.
The Holy Spirit comforts us and supplies us with peace - he is the Spirit of peace.
But as much as the Holy Spirit provides us with peace and comfort, He also creates terrible discomfoirt t the same time.
He comforts us in Christ, but disconfots us in our sin.
). The new birth and the infilling of the Holy Spirit do not instantly set us free from the tyranny of our sinful nature. Conversion is a significant experience of turning from all self-destructive attitudes and actions that are contrary to God’s will.
Galatians 5:16–21 NKJV
16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

The new birth and the infilling of the Holy Spirit do not instantly set us free from all the tyranny of our sinful nature.
As we saw last week, We are set free from the PUNISHMENT of sin, we will at the comming of Jesus be set free from the PRESENCE of sin, but for now the Holy Spirit is working in us to set us free from the POWER of sin.

The Holy Spirit leads us in cultivation of the fruit of the Spirit.

The Holy Spirit comes in to purge out these enemies of the soul and to establish God’s will. His activity is in some ways similar to that of a friendly army that comes in to assist a country in driving off invaders. The work of the Holy Spirit has some parallels to the work of a powerful antibiotic drug that is injected into the body of a sick person to defeat an infection.
VII. The Holy Spirit leads us in cultivation of the fruit of the Spirit.
Galatians 5:22–23 NKJV
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.
The Holy Spirit is interested in doing more than destroying evil.
). The Holy Spirit is interested in doing more than destroying evil. He wants to nourish the growth of our inner being so we will reflect the grace and beauty of Jesus Christ. The words of present a verbal portrait of Jesus Christ. This fruit is the heritage of every believer who makes a proper response to God’s gift of the Holy Spirit.

Conclusion

What will your response be to God’s gift of the Holy Spirit?
What will your response be to God’s gift of the Holy Spirit? It is possible for you to reply negatively to the Holy Spirit. You may remain in ignorance concerning his gracious work, or you may neglect to make a positive and constant response to his work. Some people are afraid to let the Holy Spirit do his work because they mistakenly feel that they would become some kind of religious nut. Instead of a negative response, let us each make a positive response. 1. Recognize the presence of the Holy Spirit who has come to dwell within us. 2. Rejoice in what the Holy Spirit has done for us in the past. 3. Release yourself to the Holy Spirit’s control with trust (). 4. Respond fully to the Holy Spirit as you come to understand his work.
