Holy Spirit

Exodus 31:1–6 ESV
1 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “See, I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, 3 and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with ability and intelligence, with knowledge and all craftsmanship, 4 to devise artistic designs, to work in gold, silver, and bronze, 5 in cutting stones for setting, and in carving wood, to work in every craft. 6 And behold, I have appointed with him Oholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan. And I have given to all able men ability, that they may make all that I have commanded you:
Exodus 31:1-6
Exodus 32:1–6 ESV
1 When the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain, the people gathered themselves together to Aaron and said to him, “Up, make us gods who shall go before us. As for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.” 2 So Aaron said to them, “Take off the rings of gold that are in the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me.” 3 So all the people took off the rings of gold that were in their ears and brought them to Aaron. 4 And he received the gold from their hand and fashioned it with a graving tool and made a golden calf. And they said, “These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!” 5 When Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it. And Aaron made a proclamation and said, “Tomorrow shall be a feast to the Lord.” 6 And they rose up early the next day and offered burnt offerings and brought peace offerings. And the people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.
Moses is on Mt. Sinai meeting with the Lord. You will be familiar with this story because it is here the Lord gives Moses the stone tablets, you know the ones Moses throws when he sees the people worshipping the golden calf. Beginning in chapter 24 we read about all the things God was instructing Moses to build: the ark of the covenant, the tabernacle, the mercy seat and all the intricate details concerning utensils, tables, curtains.
How does the Holy Spirit relate to us?
Exodus 31:
Exodus 31:1–11 ESV
1 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “See, I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, 3 and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with ability and intelligence, with knowledge and all craftsmanship, 4 to devise artistic designs, to work in gold, silver, and bronze, 5 in cutting stones for setting, and in carving wood, to work in every craft. 6 And behold, I have appointed with him Oholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan. And I have given to all able men ability, that they may make all that I have commanded you: 7 the tent of meeting, and the ark of the testimony, and the mercy seat that is on it, and all the furnishings of the tent, 8 the table and its utensils, and the pure lampstand with all its utensils, and the altar of incense, 9 and the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and the basin and its stand, 10 and the finely worked garments, the holy garments for Aaron the priest and the garments of his sons, for their service as priests, 11 and the anointing oil and the fragrant incense for the Holy Place. According to all that I have commanded you, they shall do.”
We can see on this side of the cross and the empty tomb that all these things represents the work of Christ. Reconciliation with the God the Father, His presence in our lives the sending of the Holy Spirit and of course the atonement for our sins.
In Chapter 31 God tells Moses
Exodus 31:2–3 ESV
2 “See, I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, 3 and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with ability and intelligence, with knowledge and all craftsmanship,
We speak about the Holy Spirit ability to distributes gift all the time. But here we see the Spirit doing something very practical, perfecting a man’s abilities, knowledge, wisdom, and creativity to accomplish a command given to Moses.

Holy Spirit Perfects our Gifts and Abilities

Holy Spirit Perfects our Gifts and Abilities

Holy Spirit Perfects our Gifts and Abilities
The instructions God gave Moses about building the Tabernacle and all that goes in it, the Ark of the Covenant (also called the Ark of the testimony), the furnishings in the tent of meeting, and the mercy seat. It would require people who had great skill and creativity.
Bezalel was called, and no one else, to head the tabernacle construction project. He had already possessed these abilities but in order to complete the job God had laid before Moses it would require those skills to be perfected so God sent his Spirit to perfect their abilities, not magically manifest these skills. Remember we are not talking about the Gifts of the Spirit, which we know can be supernatural, but the ability of the Spirit to enhance abilities we already have.
God named Bezalel by name to be in charge of the project.

Bezalel was a fine craftsman
He knew how to assess the quality of others’ work.
The New American Commentary: Exodus (16) Appointment of Bezalel and Oholiab and Other Craftsmen (31:1–11)

The clearest translation of the Hebrew might be: “I have filled him with God’s Spirit in [regard to] wisdom, in insight, in knowledge, and in every sort of work.” In other words, the way the filling of the Spirit of God affected Bezalel was to enable him to be wiser, more insightful, more knowledgeable, and more capable of any sort of work to which God assigned him.

Paul tells us to live victoriously and to avoid excesses of the flesh. Moody once illustrated this truth as follows: “Tell me,” he said to his audience, “How can I get the air out of this glass?” One man said, “Suck it out with a pump.” Moody replied, “That would create a vacuum and shatter the glass.” After many impossible suggestions, Moody smiled, picked up a pitcher of water, and filled the glass. “There,” he said, “all the air is now removed.” He then went on to show that victory in the Christian life is not by “sucking out a sin here and there,” but rather by being filled with the Spirit.

The Spirit perfected skills Bezalel already had. We are not talking about New Testament Spiritual giftings, which are very real. Today we are talking about the Spirit doing something very practical to empower God’s children to accomplish everyday tasks.
Romans 8:13–14 ESV
13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.

Holy Spirit enhances our gifts in order to accomplish God’s will

He knew how to assess the quality of others’ work.
“…your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”
The building of the tabernacle represented three things.
The tabernacle represented the presence of God
The Ark of the covenant contains a jar of manna, Aaron’s staff that budded, and the tablets containing the ten commandments. These three things served as testimonies of God’s faithfulness.
The Mercy Seat represented atonement, the removal of wrath by the offering of a gift.
His presence
A testimony
Atonement of sin
HIs
God wanted the world to know who rescued the Israelites from captivity, who provided for them during their journey, and His word. This would accomplish God’s will, which would eventually usher in the messiah, our savior, Jesus.
He wanted the tabernacle to be majestic, unique and He knew who could accomplish the task, Bezalel and those he put to work.
I wonder if we went around this room and listed the unique abilities each person in this room possess what would we see? A more important question is this.
What prevents the Spirit from doing work in those areas?
The short answer is sin.
How does God perfect those skills and abilities?
The empty glass and a bottle of water.

Romans 8:13–14 ESV
13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.
Once this begins, we can begin to walk in step with the Spirit.

Holy Spirit sets the pace

Galatians 5:25 ESV
25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.
Once we start walking in step with the Lord…things begin to happen. We begin to realize God’s presence in our everyday lives. We begin to see him moving and working in such a way we have to tell someone about it. We begin leading people to that realization that we are need of salvation and Jesus.
His will begins to manifest its self here on earth in our marriages, families, our churches, jobs, schools. Wherever you go, He is glorified.
This is so practical, as we are filled with the Spirit…in other words, as we become more aware of His presence in our lives, things, kingdom things, begin to occur.
Are you ready to see Him move? Be filled and see what the Lord will do for His glory.
