I. Some Good News
A. It’s been a rough week for some, huh?
a. sickness running rampant in homes
b. spiritual attacks
c. situations not going the way we think they should
d. and more
1. in light o all this…
B.Who hear could use some good news this morning?
a. Here’s some good news found in...
II. Main Scripture
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you,
5 who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
A. Pastor…how does this help me practically...
a. how’s this going to help me
1. sleep at night
2. get my kids healthy
3. defend me against spiritual attacks
4. or fix what seems to have been broken
b. If nothing else, these vs remind us 2 take our eyes off the temporary & on the eternal
1. it will help us remember the nature of the God we serve
2. & remind us that this God is for us, not against us!
III. Prayer
BODY
BODY
I. We got a reason to celebrate!!
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
A. When Pete says, “Blessed be the God and Father” he’s saying “YAY GOD!!!”
a. We have a reason 2 celebrate!
1. um, but pastor, do u know the kind o week I’ve had?
i. month?
ii. Season
-nope…but I do know the week, month, season I’ve had
-& I know (if u’ve accepted Jesus as LORD & SAVIOR) the kind of God u have!
*& that is more than enough reason 2 celebrate
*Don’t believe me? - look at this
vs3b: “According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again”
b. We celebrate cause God is merciful
1. Mercy is not getting what we deserve!
i. We r all sinful - Paul tells us in...
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Ro 3:23
-Why’s that a problem? - Paul again tells us...
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
*sinning is a problem because sin leads to death (ah Pastor, thought this was going 2 b good news)
2. It is good news… Our God is merciful!
i. Instead o giving us what we deserve he gave us the free gift o eternal life in Jesus
-& that life starts now!!
vs3b: “According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again”
B. When we accept Jesus as LORD & SAVIOR we are born again!
a. that eternal life starts right now!
1. Paul says it this way
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
2 Cor 5:17
b. Here’s the deal though, if we are a new creation…we should start acting like it…right?
1 For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.
1. 2 kinds o chains
i. Shiny: rules, regs & law
-we look super religious and clean, but living by the law is still slavery
ii. grimy dirty chains: sins we still live w/& commit even after we ask Jesus 2 save us
16 Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God.
-
-another reason 2 celebrate: we are born in2 something...
A. Our hope isn’t any hope…our hope lives!
1 peter
II. We are born in2 hope
A. Our hope isn’t any hope…our hope lives!
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
a. How is it that our hope lives?
vs 3c: “a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead”
1. Our hope is a person: His name is Jesus!!
i. Our hope lived a perfect life,
ii. died as if he’d lived the worst life (death on a cross)
iii. & then resurrected…came back 2 life & is alive forever!!
-Not just born again in2 hope but...
III. We are born w/an eternal, pure, unbreakable, glorious inheritance protected for us!
4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you,
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you,
A. earthly inheritance: who here wants to leave ur kids (grandkids) an inheritance when u die??
a. That usually looks like $$, property, etc…right
1. Prob is: $$ gets spent & is fleeting, property breaks down, stuff rots
b. Can I just say, like our hope, our inheritance isn’t our stuff!
1. We shouldn’t try to measure how loved we r based on the amount o stuff we have
i. U can’t measure God’s love based on the $$, car, house, / food 1 has
ii. God’s love 4 us is measured in the weight of his sacrifice
c. So, what’s God’s inheritance for us?
B. (let’s talk about the) Heavenly inheritance
a. We get a crown: (Paul tells us in…)
8 Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.
1. We have a crown o righteousness based on our faithfulness!
b. We also get a heavenly body: (Paul tells us in…)
51 Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,
52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed.
53 For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality.
54 When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.”
18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.
1 For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
1 Cor 15:51-
c. There’s a place prepared for us: (Jesus tells us in…)
2 Cor 4:18-5
1 “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.
2 In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?
3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.
Jn 14:1-3
1. When we r in Christ, we go through life & it feels like we’re out o place
i. Jesus went away & he’s taking the time to get a place set up just right for u
2. When we r in Christ, we go through life & it feels like we’re out o place
ii. This is a place where we actually belong!
2. : my cup runs over
i. bedawin camp:
-1/2 cup= “eat a meal, drink a drink & move on”
-full cup=”stay the night, u have a safe place”
-In Christ, our cup runs over= “u have an eternal place to rest, belong, & live in safety
IV. While we wait we are being guarded
5 who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you,
5 who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
vs 5: “who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.”
A. God’s guarding us by his power!! (that is reason for celebrating w/complete confidence [why?] )
a. God is powerful!!
19 and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might
20 that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places,
Eph 1:19
1. The same pwr that rose Jesus from death is guarding us…& is in us!
a. God is powerful!!
b. Just because he’s guarding us powerfully doesn’t mean bad things don’t happen
6 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials,
1. Remember what we opened w/: rough day, week, month, season…right?
i. we grieve in various trials
- bad things happen
ii. If we’re being guarded, why the rough stuff?
(how is that being guarded?)
c. guarded means that our salvation is secure
38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers,
39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Ro 8:38-
1. Nothing can pluck us from his hand…we r guarded!
B. What’s our responsibility as we r guarded
a. responsible to trust God
5 who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
1. Pete says we are guarded “through faith” (trust in action)
i. as we trust God & live out that trust he guards us
-Yes, even though we don’t c it, we trust God 4 it until it’s revealed when Jesus comes back
b. responsible to rejoice
6 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials,
1. Rejoice even when we hurt…
i. even when the hurt & trials, & difficulty lasts for a long season we REJOICE
- “Blessed be the God & Father of our Lord Jesus Christ”
C. My desire 4 us @GMCC: that we be a people known for
a. our unending trust in God lived out by the decisions we make daily
b. constant, hope-filled, daily rejoicing
VI. Rec. the good news
A. Maybe 2day ur thinking, this isn’t my story…I would add, yet!
a. These things: born again, living hope, eternal inheritance
1. are both exclusive & inclusive
i. exclusive: only through Jesus
ii. inclusive: all y’all come
-how?
B. The call
a. Repent
1. Confession: agree w/God that what we did is sin & come clean (hiding nothing) w/ God & the person u sinned against.
2. Contrition: c & feel about our sin the way God sees & feels about it
3. Change: turn from the sin to God & his ways
b. receive
1. trust Jesus 4 who he is & what he did to pay for our sins (death & resurrection)
2. accept it (say yes to him)
c. relinquish
1. Accept Jesus not only as savior but lord
i. He gets 2 decide what life looks like daily…that is, do what he says
ii. accept what he says is right & wrong, not what u say…then do it.
