If we can recall last week Jesus’ encounter with the rich young ruler. As he was lacking an assurance of where he would reside after death and came seeking truth from Jesus. He had the list of good works but was burdened yet by a guilty conscience. He cried what must i do. These deeds are not sealing the deal.
Christ knowing his heart hit him between the eyes with what his heart truly cherished. This man went away sorrowful at this word for he had many possessions. As we noted is was not the absence of possessions that made this man righteous. This is not what Jesus was teaching us but rather Trusting in riches that led the man astray from Trusting in God. Faith in God to do what he could not do was what this man lacked. Rather he was trusting in his deeds and in his money. It was common belief in that day as well as ours that a man of prestige was a righteous man and blessed by God. But that would not be an accurate teaching found within scripture.
Rather Jesus said “it is harder for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven than for a camel to go through the eye of a needle.”
Because of the false security it brings into ones life. As james says has God not chosen the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom he has promised to those who love him?
This is the truth of a covetous heart void of the possessions but full of the idolatry worship.
And as we are quick to point out the lack of faith in this mans life we may be quick to neglect the important of good works in our lives. For this is what Christ created us for is Good works. We should be zealous for good works. And as James teahes us
As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
It is rather not the merit in which we earn salvation but rather the outpouring or evidence of the spirit in ones life.
But now we come to a change of events as we begin to zoom on the period of Christs ministry and life as it comes to a close for His ultimate purpose of why he came is drawing near. This is the moment for which is testified before the foundations of the world it was prepared.
Read .
Pray.
Before we get to deep into this passage Let us not forget for whom we are describing is the son of God in flesh.
Born of a virgin named mary. A woman who had known no man, gave birth to a son whose father was in heaven, Namely God.
Colossians 1:15–18 NKJV
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.
Colossians 1:15-
Even testifying in his life if you have seen me you have seen the father.
Proving this by the miracles in which He worked. This is the point of the testimonies given of Christ that we may know who this Jesus is.
He was no ordinary man but rather was God in flesh. Doing for us what no man could have done.
Calms the storms.
Makes the lame to walk.
Causes the blind to see.
Those in Jesus’ mind these are the lesser things as he speaks to a man your sins are forgiven you. The spiritual blind eyes…See. The spiritually broken body be healed. The dead in trespasses and sins Arise and be forgive.
As we come this portion in Marks account we come from a birds eye view to zooming in to almost a moment by moment account of what transpires next.
IF this is how everyday went in the life of Jesus’ ministry which was still void of all the works that He had done just giving the high points we see how john could say in his book as it comes to a close...
John 21:24-
John 21:24–25 NKJV
This is the disciple who testifies of these things, and wrote these things; and we know that his testimony is true. And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen.
This is an event recorded in all four gospel accounts and each gives us a little detail that the others do not mention though I believe to be important.
Now this Jesus we are describing is getting ready to lay down His life a ransom for many.
So through my reading this week I wish to unveil this story through four different set of eyes.
The Disciples
The Religious leaders
The common people
Jesus Himself.
These I believe give us the full scope of the story and to see all that is transpiring in these events as Jesus begins to approach his death. When you begin to think about it if your not careful it will make your head spin. So I am going to do my best to properly unveil this story of us as Jesus once again begins to pull the curtain back of who he is.
The Disciples.
I describe this view of one of ignorance for they still didnt fully understand what was transpiring but also one of purpose that God would use to in their lives.
As they make their way to Jerusalem as told in mark 10:32.
This was customary of all who lived in the land and so you must remember that all the events that transpire begins to build momentum to this event. the crowds were all heading this way for the passover
Its like the interstate at thanksgiving time.
Jesus in Read. Jesus Predicts his death. He knows his time is coming as they begin their decent to Jerusalem for the passover.
This was customary of all who lived in the land and so you must remember that all the events that traspire begins to build momentum to this event. the crowds were all heading this way.
Its like the interstate at thanksgiving time.
Luke 18:34 NKJV
But they understood none of these things; this saying was hidden from them, and they did not know the things which were spoken.
Luke 18:34
How ignorant we are at times to the working of God in our lives unsure of where it is heading and cannot see the purpose in what we are going through or what we are doing.
This is why there is such significance in trusting in the Lord for all we do.
And yet what the disciples cared about who is going to be the greatest in the kingdom of God.
.
Great analogy how we can become so distracted to the times that are around us we are only concerened with who is the greatest.
Whose church is growing? Who has the best things going on? all the while The Lord is at hand and those who should be about the master work is preoccupied with pride. W
What a great distraction.
We will continue show the ignorance of the disciples through the other events that transpire with the rising tension.
He tells them to go get the donkey.
V.2-7., Not sure what is about to transpire
Matthews account tells us.
Matthew 21
Matthew 21:4–5 NKJV
All this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: “Tell the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your King is coming to you, Lowly, and sitting on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.’ ”
Greatly displays Christ and his humble attitude.
Johns account
The one who came to serve and give his life a ransom for many.
John 12:16
And the people praised. God were even giving him the red carpet if you will.
John 12:16 NKJV
His disciples did not understand these things at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about Him and that they had done these things to Him.
Sometime between winter and this event.
But the crowds at this point were huge where did they come from.
The common People that Praise Jesus.
Many events spiral around this event and begins to build momentum for the triumphal entry of Christ that is foretold in prophecy.
Then we see Zacheus the tax collector radically transformed and giving half of all he owned to the poor and then giving back fourfold to those whom he had robbed.
Then we see Zacheus the tax collector radically transformed and giving half of all he owned to the poor and then giving back fourfold to those whom he had robbed.
great contrast to the rich young ruler.
Then we see blind Bartimaeus healed who was blind As they come through Jericho on their way to jerusalem
Right before this event we see in John that Mary of Bethany annoints christ with oil and Judas gets angry that it was not given to the poor.
Early in the year Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead. . who was from Bethany. important to note.
Sometime between winter and this event.
But now we see Jesus’ arrival unto Bethany… And as you can imagine Word had gotten around. And why such praise.
John 12:17-
John 12:17–18 NKJV
Therefore the people, who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of his tomb and raised him from the dead, bore witness. For this reason the people also met Him, because they heard that He had done this sign.
John 12
John 12:17 NKJV
Therefore the people, who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of his tomb and raised him from the dead, bore witness.
V. 8-10
They gave him the red carpet
And they praised.
They were crying save us. The king of david. and this riding on a donkey fullfilling prophesy pointed him to be the messiah.
Preaching the Word: Mark—Jesus, Servant and Savior The King’s Triumphal Entry (vv. 7-10)

“Hosanna!” was a customary religious greeting at Passover, but on the lips of the fervent crowd it was an anticipatory cry which literally meant, “Save!” or “Save us!” The people were prophetically repeating over and over and over that Jesus was their deliverer: “Save us! … Save us! … Save us!” Not even the disciples themselves understood the full import of what they were saying. It was only after Jesus was glorified that his followers pieced it all together (John 12:16).

Our Lord was in control, and he was making a statement, for their words were his statement. The donkey he straddled prophesied of his position and his person. The Hallel Psalm, “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord,” repeated his Messianic character. The “Hosannas!” described his work. This was his moment, the moment set before the foundations of the world.

Luke 19:39-
Though they didnt fully know what they were proclaiming.
The response of the religious leaders:
We must start back from before this event.
If you remember after the dispute in the synagogue about healing a man on the sabbath they sought to kill him.
john 11
John 11:45–48 NKJV
Then many of the Jews who had come to Mary, and had seen the things Jesus did, believed in Him. But some of them went away to the Pharisees and told them the things Jesus did. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council and said, “What shall we do? For this Man works many signs. If we let Him alone like this, everyone will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and nation.”
John 11:49–50 NKJV
And one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all, nor do you consider that it is expedient for us that one man should die for the people, and not that the whole nation should perish.”
John 11:53–54 NKJV
Then, from that day on, they plotted to put Him to death. Therefore Jesus no longer walked openly among the Jews, but went from there into the country near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim, and there remained with His disciples.
John 11:53
John 11:55-
John 11:55–57 NKJV
And the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went from the country up to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves. Then they sought Jesus, and spoke among themselves as they stood in the temple, “What do you think—that He will not come to the feast?” Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a command, that if anyone knew where He was, he should report it, that they might seize Him.
You see the rise of tension before this time.
Which is even more amazing that the disciples were ignorant of what Jesus was talking about.
There was unparalleled tension in Jerusalem. None, not even the oldest, had seen anything like it. Wherever one could go—in the marketplace, in the doorways, on the corner, in the Temple—everyone was talking about it. The Passover was only a few days away. Would Jesus make a move? If so, when? What would the authorities do? As the pressure mounted, the Lord indeed took definite, calculated, and premeditated action.

John 12:9
John 12:9–10 NKJV
Now a great many of the Jews knew that He was there; and they came, not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might also see Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead. But the chief priests plotted to put Lazarus to death also,
They gave him the red carpet
John 12:19 NKJV
The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, “You see that you are accomplishing nothing. Look, the world has gone after Him!”
Luke 19:39–40 NKJV
And some of the Pharisees called to Him from the crowd, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.” But He answered and said to them, “I tell you that if these should keep silent, the stones would immediately cry out.”
They wanted Jesus to be silent. and to silent the people.
And they praised.
What great hatred these people had towards Jesus. We cannot think anything differently could come across our path.
These religious leaders were ignorant of truly who they were about to slay.
This is where we get to the perspective of Jesus.
Luke 19:41–44 NKJV
Now as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it, saying, “If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. For days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment around you, surround you and close you in on every side, and level you, and your children within you, to the ground; and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”
Luke 19:41-
Jesus in his compassion seeing the city wept.
They were proclaiming him as King but only He knew what awaited his future and the true prupose of his coming.
he didnt come to bring physical freedom from the bondage of Rome but rather spiritual freedom from the bondage of Sin.
Mark 10:45 NKJV
For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
Now that he was back in Bethany, on the outskirts of Jerusalem, expectations were running high. Earlier he had raised Lazarus from the dead (). The sensational news had spread around Jerusalem many times. The numbers of those observing his entourage had dramatically increased. Most recently, as he journeyed to this Passover he had healed blind Bartimaeus in Jericho, and the pilgrims moving on before him were enthusiastically spreading the news to everyone (10:46–52). Now, as he resided in Bethany, great crowds were coming out from Jerusalem to see him and the resurrected Lazarus. The religious leaders were counseling together as to how they might kill Jesus, because many of the people were believing in him ().
Preaching the Word: Mark—Jesus, Servant and Savior The King’s Tears (Luke 19:41-44)

Jesus saw all this in prospect and wailed in grief. This was the heart of a new kind of king. Jesus’ sorrow indicated his humanity, but it was also a revelation of the heart of God.

Fix this in your thoughts. This is how Jesus Christ and God the Father and the blessed Holy Spirit sorrow over hearts that miss their “day” and “what would bring … peace”—namely, repentance toward God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

As your life stands right now, what does Jesus Christ see in your future? Judgment? Your towers pulled down? Desolation?

The Son of God in tears,

The wondering angels see.

Be thou astonished, O my soul,

He shed those tears for thee.

The tears of Christ measure the infinite value of your soul. Christ wept and lamented over Jerusalem, as he always weeps over the souls of the unrepentant.

This is our King. Let us worship him with all that we have!

Are you the young rich ruler depending on the securities of riches or good deeds to come before the holy throne. Maybe emtpy words of faith. You say you believe but you have no evidence of it.
I pray you would see the King who had come and sits on the throne that gave his life a ransom that we may be Righteous before him. Plead the cross.
Maybe you are rundown on the mundane duties and have lost the dignity that God bestows upon the responsibilities he has given us and you cannot see what He is doing. We don’t know all the things God has instore but as we faithfully follow him He is working a master piece with our lives that are unimaginable.
Maybe its time to repent of your slackness concerning his kingdom.
