Spiritual Warfare

Ephesians 6:10–15 KJV 1900
10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. 11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. 13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; 15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

This section of the book of Ephesians is perhaps one of the most important because Paul is giving us insight into the nature of spiritual warfare and the keys for victory. We need to understand the nature of spiritual warfare because, frankly, this world is getting more dangerous and there are spiritual forces of darkness behind what is happening in the world today.

In order to be victorious in spiritual warfare, we need to be prepared and we need to understand the schemes of the enemy. Many people are not spiritually prepared and therefore are discouraged and defeated.

When you look at the events unfolding on the world scene the nature of spiritual battle becomes more and more apparent. You look at what’s happening in the Middle East and the rise of militant Islam and its infiltration into Europe, and eventually throughout the US, you become more and more aware that this world is going to see great struggles and we need to understand the spiritual forces behind these events.

We also need to understand the schemes of the enemy which are against us personally. Jesus said that the thief comes to steal, kill and destroy. The battle is for your soul. The enemy would love nothing more than to steal your faith and destroy your relationship with God. He would love nothing more than the shipwreck your faith and to drive a wedge between you and God. The battle is for your soul.

Paul therefore is writing so we might understand the schemes of the enemy, be prepared against the spiritual forces of wickedness and be able to stand firm, having put on the full armor of God.

I.      Be Stronger in the Lord

Notice that Paul is not just saying, “Be strong.” He is saying, “Be strong in the Lord.”If a person thinks he is strong in himself, he’s only deceiving himself. Self-confidence and arrogance is a great weakness and very easy for the enemy to exploit. It makes a person quite blind.

This is why Paul prayed in chapter 3 that we might be strengthened with power in the inner man by the Holy Spirit and be filled up with all the fullness of God. We need to be stronger in the Lord. When David faced his darkest hour and it seemed that everything and everyone was against him, he knew the key to victory.

,
1 Samuel 30:6 KJV 1900
6 And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the Lord his God.
,
Isaiah 40:31 KJV 1900
31 But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings as eagles; They shall run, and not be weary; And they shall walk, and not faint.

A.     God can make you able to stand firm

Spiritual victory is possible. God is able to strengthen your soul so that you may be able to stand firm against the schemes of the enemy

.First, you must put on the full armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm. Without that, there’s no hope of standing firm and you will be easily defeated by the enemy.

Secondly, understand the nature of the attack against you; understand the schemes of your enemy. As we understand each aspect of the armor of God, we also have insight into the attack of the enemy.

would love nothing more than to destroy your faith and get you to walk away from God.The phrase ‘stand firm’ suggests that there will be things coming against you from which you must stand firm. In fact, the world is changing rapidly before our eyes, and it is moving away from God.To stand firm is to hold your ground against the wave of pressure of worldly things coming against you.Spiritual forces of darkness are behind many of those worldly pressures. In another place Paul called Satan the prince of the power of the air. The system is corrupted; the world is in rebellion against God.

Third, understand the importance of the battle. The battle is for your soul; the enemy would love nothing more than to destroy your faith and get you to walk away from God.

The phrase ‘stand firm’ suggests that there will be things coming against you from which you must stand firm. In fact, the world is changing rapidly before our eyes, and it is moving away from God.

To stand firm is to hold your ground against the wave of pressure of worldly things coming against you.Spiritual forces of darkness are behind many of those worldly pressures.

In another place Paul called Satan the prince of the power of the air.

The system is corrupted; the world is in rebellion against God.

B.      Choose your battles wisely

Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, Paul wrote, but against rulers, powers, world forces of this darkness; against spiritual forces of wickedness.

Too many people are in the wrong battle. There’s plenty of conflict, but it’s with the wrong enemy. If you’re battling against your wife or husband, or your kids, or your boss or employees, you’re in the wrong battle.

In fact, you’ve already lost a spiritual battle. Our struggle is spiritual, there are rulers, powers, world forces of darkness and spiritual forces of wickedness.

We have an enemy against us.There are commonly two responses when people consider the idea that we are in a spiritual battle.

One is to blame the enemy for everything that’s wrong in a person’s life. It’s the old ‘the devil made me do it’ response. How convenient.

Illus – This is actually a common issue in Africa where many believe that almost all problems are explained as the result of a demon. If a person struggles with lust, it must be because they have a demon.
,
James 1:14–16 KJV 1900
14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. 15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. 16 Do not err, my beloved brethren.

Another common response is to take a very aggressive stance and start rebuking the enemy at every turn and essentially they start hating Satan. Here’s the thing,

Satan doesn’t actually care if you hate him. In fact, he’s all for it. He just wants you to hate. Hate something, hate your spouse, hate your employer, hate something, he just wants you to hate.Someone came to Jesus and asked what was the highest, the first, the foremost of all things that God has ever said.

When Jesus responded to that question he didn’t say, “You shall hate the enemy with all your heart.” No, Jesus said that the highest and foremost of all things God wants for us is to love God.

That’s why Paul began by saying, “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might.” That’s the beginning of spiritual warfare and therefore spiritual victory. Love God first and foremost.

C.      Having done everything, stand firm

– take up the full armor of God so that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything to stand firm… stand firm. The key is the phrase ‘having done everything.’ In other words, he’s telling us in advance that we will face spiritual battles and he’s also telling us to take up the armor of God and be prepared.

Ephesians 6:13 KJV 1900
13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
Illus – My son just finished nine years of serving in the Marines in Special Forces. When he wasn’t deployed he was training, always training, always becoming prepared. That’s the key for us as well.

There are great troubles coming upon this world and we here in the United States will also see many troubles, and it will purify the church. Those with true and authentic faith who have taken up the armor of God will stand firm in that day.

,
1 Corinthians 16:13–14 KJV 1900
13 Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong. 14 Let all your things be done with charity.

II.      Take up the Full Armor of God

Paul keeps repeating that phrase, take up the full armor of God. It’s important. The battle is for your soul, but God prepares you for victory and equips you with everything you need so that you will be able to stand firm.

Notice that this is the armor of God. It’s not your flimsy armor, this is God’s provision to stand firm.

A.      Gird your loins with truth

The belt of a Roman soldier identified him clearly as being ready for battle. It’s the first thing a soldier would put on to prepare for war.

On his belt he would carry his sword. Even when not in battle a soldier would wear his belt. By wearing it he made it quite clear what he stood for.

Paul identifies the belt with truth. It’s the foundation on which everything else is connected.

There’s a reason why truth is so important, because one of the main tactics and schemes of the enemy is to lie.

,
John 8:44 KJV 1900
44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

If the enemy can get you to believe a lie, he has won a great victory. If he can make you a liar, that too gives him a great victory.

Satan does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. How much truth is in you?

Jesus Christ is the truth and if you have asked Him into your heart then you can stand in the truth. If you have received the Holy Spirit, then the Spirit of truth is strengthening your soul.

Lies hold many people captive and keeps them bound and chained and imprisoned.

, ,
John 8:31–32 KJV 1900
31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; 32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
John 8:36 KJV 1900
36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.

The enemy wants you to believe lies about yourself and lies about God.

,
Genesis 3:4–5 KJV 1900
4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: 5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

B.      Put on the breastplate of righteousness

The breastplate of course protected the heart. The key to life is the heart, but it also represents the place from which we love.

If the enemy can get you to doubt God’s love, he’s won something big. We love God because we recognize how much He has loved us when He sent his Son to die on the cross on our behalf.

And if Satan can get you to doubt that love, he’s driven a wedge.Put on the breastplate of righteousness to protect your heart.

Remember that this is the armor of God, it’s not your flimsy armor, it’s His.There are two parts to this.

The day you ask Jesus Christ into your life you are made right with God, your sins are completely forgiven, it’s finished.Done.

When you put that on and understand what God just gave you, then your standing before God has been settled, and settled forever.

Done. When you put that on and understand what God just gave you, then your standing before God has been settled, and settled forever. This is important because when you falter, when you sin, the enemy will accuse you and try to convince you that God is angry and is withholding His love. No, God works His righteousness out in your life. Day by day, we grow in that righteousness which He has given us. He patiently works on our heart.

This is important because when you falter, when you sin, the enemy will accuse you and try to convince you that God is angry and is withholding His love. No, God works His righteousness out in your life. Day by day, we grow in that righteousness which He has given us. He patiently works on our heart.

C.      Shod your feet with the gospel of peace

If you don’t have shoes, you’re not going to get very far, because there are some hard things you have to walk on in this life, there are hard places before you.

Illus – I mentioned on Wednesday when we were growing up we would sometimes walk to a neighbor’s pond to go swimming. More than once I walked there, on the gravel road, in my bare feet. You try that one time and you realize the importance of wearing something on your feet.
In contrast, you put on boots and immediately you feel stronger; ready to walk on difficult terrain, or use a shovel or swing an axe.

It’s the preparation of the gospel of peace. It counters a scheme of the enemy. If he can bring conflict, if he can destroy your relationships, he’s won a great victory.

If he can bring war between you and your spouse or anyone around you, he’s won something big The enemy wants conflict and he’ll stir it up. Do you think the enemy wants peace in the Middle East?

No, he wants conflict, he wants chaos. But Jesus is the Prince of peace. He speaks peace in the midst of the storm.

He’ll give you peace with God so that you yourself can be a man or woman of peace.Jesus speaks peace to the troubles of your heart and heals those wounds which you carried so that you can grow in strength and you yourself can speak peace.

,
Matthew 5:9 KJV 1900
9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

Spiritual Warfare -2

Ephesians 6:15–24 KJV 1900
15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: 18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; 19 And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak. 21 But that ye also may know my affairs, and how I do, Tychicus, a beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord, shall make known to you all things: 22 Whom I have sent unto you for the same purpose, that ye might know our affairs, and that he might comfort your hearts. 23 Peace be to the brethren, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 24 Grace be with all them that love our Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity. Amen.

In this last section of Ephesians Paul gives us insight into the nature of spiritual warfare and how we can have victory. This world is getting more dangerous by the day and there are spiritual forces of darkness behind what is happening in the world.

When you look at the events unfolding on the world scene the nature of spiritual battle becomes more and more apparent. This world is going to see greater and greater struggles; we need to understand the spiritual forces behind these events.

If we are to be victorious, we need to understand the schemes of the enemy which are against us not only on the world scene, but personally. The thief comes to steal, kill and destroy. The battle is for your soul. The enemy would love nothing more than to shipwreck your faith and destroy your relationship with God.

Paul lays the foundation for spiritual warfare in verse 10 where he said, “Be strong in the Lord and the strength of His might.” To be strong in the Lord is to have a sincere relationship where there is authentic revival in the soul.

Over and over Paul says that you must put on the armor of God so that you will be able to resist in the evil day. Each aspect of the armor of God also reveals the schemes of the enemy. Understanding the strategy against us is the key to victory. Any strategy of warfare that doesn’t anticipate the tactics of the enemy has no hope of success.

Paul therefore is writing so we might understand the schemes of the enemy, be prepared against the spiritual forces of wickedness and be able to stand firm, having put on the full armor of God.

we looked at the first three aspects of the armor of God. The foundation of everything is the belt of truth. The enemy is a liar and the father of lies, if he can get you to believe a lie he has won something big. If he can make you a liar, he has won something even bigger. Put on the belt of truth, God’s truth, and take your stand in the truth.

When you put on the breastplate of righteousness, you’re protecting your heart. God gives you the righteousness of Christ as a gift so that you are made right with God the very moment you ask Jesus Christ into your heart as Lord and Savior. That matter is settled with God and it is settled forever. When you sin, when you blow it, the enemy would try to convince you that God’s done with you, that He’s angry and withholds His love, but that’s a lie. God’s love never fails and nothing can separate you from the love of God which is found in Christ Jesus our Lord.

When you shod your feet with the gospel of peace, you counter a scheme of the enemy. If he can bring pain in relationships, if you can bring conflict in your life, if he can get you to be at war and battle with the people around you, he’s won a great victory. Jesus is the Prince of peace and he speaks peace in the midst of the storm. “Blessed are the peacemakers,” Jesus said, “for they shall be called sons of God.”

Finally, Paul said, ‘having done everything to stand firm, stand firm therefore.’ Prepare your life for victory by taking on the full armor of God and then, having done everything to stand firm… Stand firm. There comes a time in your life when you make a decision, when you stop wavering, when you resolve this in your own heart, when you draw a line in the sand. Stand therefore and be victorious.

I.       Put on the Full Armor of God

These last three aspects of the armor of God are some of the most important. As we go through each of them, the strategy of the enemy will be revealed. The armor of God is the key to victory. But this is the armor of God, it’s not my flimsy armor.Jesus was referring to spiritual warfare in Luke chapter 11…

,
Luke 11:21–22 KJV 1900
21 When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace: 22 But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils.

Jesus was speaking of how He overpowers the forces of darkness in a person’s life so he can be set free and receive the Holy Spirit in their life. And if you have asked Jesus into your heart as Lord and Savior, He is now the Strongman in your life and the armor of God is that on which you now rely.

A.      Take up the shield of faith

The Roman soldier of the first century would use a shield made of wood and covered with leather held together with metal bands for strength. It would be slightly curved to fit the shape of the body, about 4 ½ by 2 ½ in size, strapped to the left arm. Groups of soldiers would lock their shields together to form the ‘tortoise’ for great effect.

Before battle, the leather would be soaked in water so as to extinguish flaming arrows. A strategy of the enemy was to tie cloth to the end of arrows, dip them in flaming pitch and send them flying into the shields in the hopes of setting them afire.

Paul connects the shield to our faith, it’s the armor that protects when the enemy sends flaming missiles against us. One of the key strategies of the enemy is to attack your faith.

Illus – When Israel was set free from the captivity of Egypt they went into the desert and they actually made a fairly straight run toward the promised land. As they drew near they sent out twelve spies to consider the land and bring back a report. This they did, but when the spies came back their report struck fear in the heart of the people and their faith began to crumble, “We can’t do it, we can’t do it, we must turn back.”

Fear is the opposite of faith. Fear is the prison of the soul; we must not be taken captive by fear. What do we have to be afraid of? They could take my life; then I’ll be in the presence of my Savior, Paul responds. What if I’m persecuted and they bring harm to me? Then I’ll count it an honor to be persecuted for the name of Jesus Christ. What if I lose all my possessions? God is the strength of my life and He is my inheritance, Paul responds.

,
2 Timothy 1:7 KJV 1900
7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
,
Psalm 3:1–3 KJV 1900
1 Lord, How are they increased that trouble me! Many are they that rise up against me. 2 Many there be which say of my soul, There is no help for him in God. Selah. 3 But thou, O Lord, art a shield for me; My glory, and the lifter up of mine head.

Roman soldiers would lock their shields together. They are much more difficult to defeat when strength is added to strength.

In the same way, we need to be locked together as a church family, we are stronger together. If the enemy can get you drawn away, you’re much more vulnerable, you’re much easier to defeat.

Illus – An American missionary family in the Philippines was having a rest day and decided to play croquet…

We are stronger together when we encourage each other in faith. Then, when the enemy sends flaming missiles, you have a defense, there is a strength of faith, you have confidence in God as a shield.

It’s the troubles, the stresses, the difficulties of life that the enemy would use against you to attack your faith, “If God were for you, if God truly loved you, He wouldn’t let you go through these troubles.

”Jesus spoke of this when He said that the word of God falls on different types of soils, or different types of hearts. One type of soil is thin; it has rocks in it.

At first, they receive the word of God with joy, but as troubles and difficulties arise in their life they’re offended and their faith withers.

Faith is the very thing that will sustain you in times of trouble; it’s confidence that God is with you that gives you strength. He never promised that life would be easy, but He did promise He would be with us.

,
John 16:33 KJV 1900
33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

B.      Take the helmet of salvation

A soldier wouldn’t think of going into battle without a helmet; otherwise he’ll suffer a mortal wound. If the enemy can get you to doubt your salvation, that is a mortal wound. When someone messes up their life the enemy is right there on the attack, “You call yourself a Christian?

There are troubles in your life; I see you have sin; look how badly you’ve messed up. You’re not a Christian, you’re not a follower of Christ.”If he can get you to doubt your salvation, that’s a mortal wound. Take up the helmet of salvation.

This is not your armor; this is the armor of God you’ve taken up. Our salvation is sure and steadfast and nothing and no one can snatch us out of His hand. Our salvation was purchased for us by the blood of Jesus Christ and nothing and no one will take it away from us.You might say, “I have sin in my life.” Oh, He knows that very well. Listen, you didn’t earn your salvation by your holiness and you’re not keeping it by your holiness either.

The helmet of salvation is the assurance we have that He purchased our salvation for us and gave it to us as a gift. He’s not going anywhere; He’s not turning His back on you, you don’t turn your back on Him.

,

John 10:27–28 KJV 1900
27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: 28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
,
Psalm 27:1 KJV 1900
1 The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
Psalm 27:1 KJV 1900
1 The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

C.      Take up the sword of the Spirit

The sword of the Spirit is the word of God. It’s the only aspect of the armor of God that is used as a weapon. Two things to emphasize; it’s the sword of the Spirit… and it’s the word of God.

,

2 Corinthians 10:4 KJV 1900
4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)

The problem is that many are not skilled in how to use a sword and therefore vulnerable to attack.

Illus – Some years ago my wife gave me a book called The Compleat Gentleman. One phrase stood out to me, “A gentleman masters whatever he does.” In those days a gentleman had to be a master of swordplay. Remember, the enemy is also skilled.

When Jesus encountered the enemy in , His response to spiritual attack was the Word of God.

,
Matthew 4:4 KJV 1900
4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

II.      Be Alert and Pray

If you put on the armor of God, you must then be ready; we live in dangerous days. Understand the schemes of the enemy, and be on the alert.

A.     Pray in the Spirit

Paul understood the significance of prayer. The disciples saw the relationship Jesus had with His Father and understood that prayer was a significant part of that relationship, which is why they said, “Teach us to pray.”What did Jesus pray?

I’m convinced that one aspect of His prayer was to enjoy the intimacy of relationship with His Father. This is why Paul said to pray in the Spirit. If there isn’t spiritual revival, there is no spiritual victory.

There are some prayers we do that are kind of like brushing our teeth; we do them regularly to remember the Lord and acknowledge Him.To pray in the Spirit suggests something deeper, something more personal, more intimate, where the Spirit begins to move upon the soul.

B.      Be on the alert

In the last days, Jesus said, they will not understand until the troubles come upon them like a flood. But you, be of sober spirit, be on the alert.

1 Peter 5:8–9 KJV 1900
8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: 9 Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.

“Watch and be ready,” Jesus said, “watch for the signs of the times.” Are you ready to meet the Lord? If He were to return today, would you be ready?
