There are Different Viewpoints Regarding this Passage

This passage is one that may have many thinking different things that about giving. Some use this as an example of wholehearted giving. Others use this as an example of the church exploiting the poor members of the church.

11 For there will never cease to be poor people in the land; that is why I am commanding you, ‘You must willingly open your hand to your afflicted and poor brother in your land.’

Believers are told that they are to help the poor.

This story is recorded twice which means that there is an important lesson here.

1. Charity to the poor is an important matter in faith

2. Christ is watching us in what we give to righteousness and charity

Christ is watching us in what we give to righteousness and charity
Christ sees and accepts the charity of the poor in a particular way

3. Christ sees and accepts the charity of the poor in a particular way

Mark uses the crowd/widow as a contrast because many give to order to be a part of the “in” crowd. Whereas the widow could not be a part of the “in” crowd because of the her martial status.
In Luke the contrast is not social status but economic status.
The giving in the Temple happens after Jesus gives a warning to the people about the scribes and how they exploit the widows.

He also said in His teaching, “Beware of the scribes, who want to go around in long robes, and who want greetings in the marketplaces, 39 the front seats in the synagogues, and the places of honor at banquets. 40 They devour widows’ houses and say long prayers just for show. These will receive harsher punishment.”

38 He also said in His teaching, “Beware of the scribes, who want to go around in long robes, and who want greetings in the marketplaces, 39 the front seats in the synagogues, and the places of honor at banquets. 40 They devour widows’ houses and say long prayers just for show. These will receive harsher punishment.”

46 “Beware of the scribes, who want to go around in long robes and who love greetings in the marketplaces, the front seats in the synagogues, and the places of honor at banquets. 47 They devour widows’ houses and say long prayers just for show. These will receive greater punishment.”

jesus is speaking about
There are people that should know better don’t do better. This speaks to the corrupt heart.
They want to look good, They want people to know them. They want to be in high places. However they miss the main point of the evidence of faith, but like to show how righteous they are.
