- The Trials Series “The Garden, Jesus’ Trial”

INTRO: Last week we looked at Chapter 17 – The Lord’s Prayer… I mentioned that so often when we hear the words, “The Lord’s Prayer” we are immediately reminded of the occasion in the sermon on the mount or perhaps when His disciples asked Him to teach them to pray… And He responded, when you pray, say: “Our Father in heaven, hallow it be Your name, Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven…”
Those words, this model of prayer, those prayers that He had prayed so often “As was His custom… would be the ultimate guide for Jesus amidst His own personal ‘Trial’ on this His last night in the Garden
The Garden of Gethsemane: “An Oil Press” (Hebrew: ‘Gath’ – Press, Winepress; ‘Shehmen’ /’Sheh.menie’ – Oil)
By way of understanding, Olives before they are pressed they must be crushed, this process was done so by a large mill stone fueled by a mule, the olive pit and meat paste was collected in baskets and taken to be pressed… the pressing was a process of three presses… the first press gave off the best oil… it was the first fruits and given to the Lord at the temple… the second press was good, and was used in food, medicine, perfume, cosmetics… the third was the least and was used for fuel, oil lamps and soap…

Isaiah 53:5 NKJV
5 But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.
The immense pressure He underwent, praying three times… Oil for offering, Oil for healing, Oil for cleansing…
The Garden – All four gospels give us account and each with some specific details…
NKJV
1 When Jesus had spoken these words, He went out with His disciples over the Brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which He and His disciples entered.
2 And Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place; for Jesus often met there with His disciples.
3 Then Judas, having received a detachment of troops, and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.
4 Jesus therefore, knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward and said to them, “Whom are you seeking?”
5 They answered Him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am He.” And Judas, who betrayed Him, also stood with them.
6 Now when He said to them, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground.
7 Then He asked them again, “Whom are you seeking?” And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.”
8 Jesus answered, “I have told you that I am He. Therefore, if you seek Me, let these go their way,”
9 that the saying might be fulfilled which He spoke, “Of those whom You gave Me I have lost none.”
10 Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.
11 So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into the sheath. Shall I not drink the cup which My Father has given Me?”
This morning I want to look at Jesus’ statement to Peter in verse 11, “Put your sword into the sheath. Shall I not drink the cup which My Father has given Me?”Such resolve, “…shall I not drink…”, how Jesus arrives at this resolve reveals His ‘trial’ in the garden…· Let’s consider this account in Matthew and Luke’s gospel…
36 Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to the disciples, “Sit here while I go and pray over there.”
37 And He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and He began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed.
38 Then He said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch with Me.”
39 He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.”
40 Then He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “What! Could you not watch with Me one hour?
41 Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
42 Again, a second time, He went away and prayed, saying, “O My Father, if this cup cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done.”
43 And He came and found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy.
44 So He left them, went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words.
45 Then He came to His disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners.
46 Rise, let us be going. See, My betrayer is at hand.”
Luke 22:39–46 NKJV
39 Coming out, He went to the Mount of Olives, as He was accustomed, and His disciples also followed Him. 40 When He came to the place, He said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.” 41 And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.” 43 Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him. 44 And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. 45 When He rose up from prayer, and had come to His disciples, He found them sleeping from sorrow. 46 Then He said to them, “Why do you sleep? Rise and pray, lest you enter into temptation.”
He began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed.

Fell on His face
“O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me;
Nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.
“What! Could you not watch with Me one hour?
“O My Father, if this cup cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done.”
And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly.
Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him.
He came and found them asleep again
So He left them, went away again, and prayed the third time
I think it must be remembered and not minimized that Jesus was fully man… His wrestling over “take this cup…” must have been, as I process it, the agony of physical pain that He would endure (Crushed and Pressed), as He knew the Scriptures… (
Isaiah 53 NKJV
1 Who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? 2 For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, And as a root out of dry ground. He has no form or comeliness; And when we see Him, There is no beauty that we should desire Him. 3 He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. 4 Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. 5 But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth. 8 He was taken from prison and from judgment, And who will declare His generation? For He was cut off from the land of the living; For the transgressions of My people He was stricken. 9 And they made His grave with the wicked— But with the rich at His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was any deceit in His mouth. 10 Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, And the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand. 11 He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, For He shall bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great, And He shall divide the spoil with the strong, Because He poured out His soul unto death, And He was numbered with the transgressors, And He bore the sin of many, And made intercession for the transgressors.

that He would take on the penalty of ‘Sin’… “pay” rather, receive the wages for all sin… Finally, to be separated from His Father… Physical, emotional, spiritual pains that cannot be compared to… And to think, we, with not so little a temptation, will violate His will… without any process or considerThis agonizing over “Thy will” verses “my will”… Like Jesus’ travail amidst trial, we too face trials… why?
1 Peter 1:3–9 NKJV
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, 8 whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, 9 receiving the end of your faith—the salvation of your souls.

Verse 5:
We are kept by the power of God…
Through faith, for salvation…
Last time… end times…
Verse 6:
6 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, Rejoice
James 1:2–4 NKJV
2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. 4 But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.

Two things verse 6 identifies regarding our various trials
1 Peter 1:6 NKJV
6 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials,
Trials:
They are temporary… “For a little while”
They are necessary… “if need be…”
Why? “that the genuineness of your faith may be found to praise, honor and glory, receiving the end of our faith – Salvation… where our faith shall become our sight
Perhaps you are here and are being crushed, pressed beyond measure, feeling alone and the loneliness of your circumstances… sifted as wheat… (you – plural… Satan has asked to sift “you”)
Jesus knows the travail, He knows your travail and trialHe has shown the way to overcoming…He went to His knees in prayer to the Father…
Adam (the representation of all humanity – ) parlayed with Satan… Do we?
Jesus, the second Adam (last Adam) went to His fell to His face and cried out to His Father…
As we come to the communion table, for those of us amidst the trials of life… Let us humbly and boldly approach the throne of Grace… and talk with our heavenly Father…
Our Father which art in Heaven
Hallow it be Thy name
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven
Give us this day our daily bread
Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against usLead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil
For thine is the kingdom, power and glory forever and ever, Amen.
