The final chapter of Matthew

Matthew 16:21–22 ESV
From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord! This shall never happen to you.”
Matthew 16:21

δει: “he must”/ “It is necessary”

Matthew 16:16 ESV
Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
Now at the presentation
δει: “he must”/ “It is necessary”

δει: “he must”/ “It is necessary”

In Matthew, δεῖ
, “be necessary,” is associated with God’s will for the Christ in 16:21; 17:10; and 26:54.
Matthew 16:21 ESV
From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.
Matthew 17:10 ESV
And the disciples asked him, “Then why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?”
Matthew 26:54 ESV
But how then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?”
Matthew 26:54 ESV
But how then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?”
Three times, the necessary response of a disciple employs this verb (18:33; 23:23; 25:27), but in each of these three cases, it refers to what was “necessary” but did not happen because of unbelief.
Matthew 18:33 ESV
And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?’
Matthew 23:23 ESV
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.
Matthew 25:27 ESV
Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest.
Mercy, justice, faithfulness, and valuable investment each missed because of unbelief.

Peter’s response

a far cry from what Peter declared eight verses before:
Matthew 16:16 ESV
Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
Now at the presentation of the will of God for Jesus, Peter completely switches gears
Matthew 17:22 ESV
As they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men,
Matthew 16:22 ESV
And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord! This shall never happen to you.”
Matthew 16:21 ESV
From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.

Peter @ the transfiguration: “The christ is on par with Moses & Elijah”

Matthew 17:4 ESV
And Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.”
Matthew 17:5 ESV
He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.”
Matthew 17:4

Peter must:

Matthew 26:35 ESV
Peter said to him, “Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you!” And all the disciples said the same.
Finally, Peter tries to place his own boastful intent to die with Jesus in the category of what “is necessary” (26:35). In a double irony, Peter’s death will not be necessary, but neither is he brave or committed enough to die for Jesus’ sake.

The Prophecy of Elijah

Matthew 17:10 ESV
And the disciples asked him, “Then why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?”
Matthew 26:54 ESV
But how then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?”
Malachi 4:4–6 ESV
“Remember the law of my servant Moses, the statutes and rules that I commanded him at Horeb for all Israel. “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction.”
Malachi 4:4-6
Referenced in , ,
Deuteronomy 4:9 ESV
“Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and your children’s children—
Deuteronomy 6:7 ESV
You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.

Jesus Only

Matthew 17:7 ESV
But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and have no fear.”
Matthew 17:7–8 ESV
But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and have no fear.” And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.
Matthew 17:7
Matthew 17:8 ESV
And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.
The next time someone speaks those words of comfort, it will be the angel first and then the risen Jesus himself who says to the women, “Stop being afraid” (28:5, 10). For now, the disciples are to listen to “Jesus himself, alone”
