Introduction

Greetings…
We have been studying through the them, “God By Name.”
Thus far we have looked at 5 different names give for God in the Scriptures and examined their meaning.
Today we are going to be looking at the actual “proper name” of God in Scripture which is “Yahweh.”
It is first found in
Genesis 2:4 ESV
4 These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.
In all Yahweh, for God, is found 6,828 times in the Old Testament.
As we have seen thus far when a name is used for our Creator it has a clear and powerful message behind it.
Elohim - God the Father, Son, & Spirit
El Shaddai - Almighty
Adonai - Master
When it comes to Yahweh there is simply a “best guess” based on the verses wherein it is found and the possible grammar behind it.
The majority consensus is that Yahweh is derived from the “older form of the Hebrew verb hayah, ‘to be.’ ” (AYBD)
This is the general consensus because of what we read in
Exodus 3:14 ESV
14 God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I am has sent me to you.’ ”
There are two possible meanings behind the phrase “I am who I am” with both lending themselves to a fuller understanding of Yahweh.
“I am the Existing One” or “He who causes to be.”
Tonight I want us to examine both this in light of God’s proper name Yahweh.
Yahweh certainly means…

God Who Exists

Yahweh is always.

God the Father, Son, and Spirit are always in the present meaning they have always been, are, and will be.
Several Scriptures back this significant truth as well.
Psalm 90:2 ESV
2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.
Isaiah 40:28 ESV
28 Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable.
Hebrews 1:8 ESV
8 But of the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom.
Hebrews 13:8 ESV
8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
This is powerful for a couple of reasons.
First, that Yahweh is deity and not some man-made imagination.
Romans 1:19–20 ESV
19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.
Second, that Yahweh is reliable.
Psalm 9:10 ESV
10 And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you.

Summary

Yahweh is “God who exists” and thus “has always been, is always, and will always be.”
In other words Yahweh is God.
As we saw in there is another reality with Yahweh and that is…

God Who Causes To Be

Yahweh’s will.

What is meant by “God’s will be done?”
In one extreme some assert it means God is in complete control of every aspect of life and thus we can do nothing of our own fruition or choosing.
In an opposite extreme others assert it means God’s will has been accomplished and is doing nothing at all anymore.
So again, what does it mean “God’s will be done” in the sense of “God who causes to be?”
There is no doubt that Yahweh is “God who causes to be” or “God whose will is accomplished.”
Yahweh willed to create the universe and all that is in it and He did.
Genesis 1:1 ESV
1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
Yahweh willed to bring about the fullness of time and He did.
Genesis 3:15 ESV
15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
Galatians 4:4 ESV
4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law,
Yahweh willed to send His Son as the propitiation for our sins.
John 3:16 NKJV
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
Romans 3:25 ESV
25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.
There is also no doubt that not everything in this life happens as God wills it.
Yahweh wills that everyone is saved by obeying Him but not everyone does.
1 Timothy 2:3–4 ESV
3 This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
Matthew 7:13 ESV
13 “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many.
Yahweh wants what is best for all of us but chance happens to us all.
Ecclesiastes 9:11 ESV
11 Again I saw that under the sun the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor favor to those with knowledge, but time and chance happen to them all.
So how does all this information help us, it gives us insight into the reality of “Yahweh’s will” or “God who causes to be.”

Yahweh’s will be done.

As we just saw God does have will and His will is always accomplished however, there are limitations place by God in His nature that must be realized.
God’s will is limited to His Word as He cannot deviate from it.
Hebrews 6:18 ESV
18 so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us.
God’s will is limited by His goodness as He cannot deviate from good to evil.
1 John 4:8 ESV
8 Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.
So, how do we seek “God’s will to be done” in our lives because we know we are supposed to.
Matthew 6:10 ESV
10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
James 4:15 ESV
15 Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.”
How do we seek “God’s will to be done” in our lives?
By seeking what is righteous and true. ()
Mt
Matthew 6:20–21 ESV
20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
If we love God we will only seek what He will for us in our lives.

Summary

Conclusion

Yahweh is the “I Am” and as such He is “God who exists” and “God causes to be.”
Invitation
Isaiah 59:1–2 ESV
1 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; 2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
Philippians 2:6–7 ESV
6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
Romans 10:17 ESV
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
Hebrews 11:6 ESV
6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
Acts 17:30 ESV
30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent,
Matthew 10:32 NKJV
32 “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven.
2 Thessalonians 1:8 ESV
8 in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.
1 Corinthians 15:1–4 ESV
1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
Romans 6:3–5 ESV
3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.
1 John 1:7 ESV
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
