This passage in Romans states with finality the NEW reality Christ has won from us no longer to be beholden to the old master of sin. The labels given by others, the ways we resign ourselves to “I am what I am and I cannot change” sort of thinking… all of this can be in the past. I will also reference 1 Corinthians 4:1-5 where the judgment of others is concerned. The message will close with a more reflective tone of gratitude and resolved faith to live in light of this. I will also be encouraging and challenging everyone to consider pursuing the Lord in public baptism this summer as a declaration of this freedom in Christ.

Romans 6:1–14 ESV
What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For one who has died has been set free from sin. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.

Baptized into Christ...

2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.

Baptized into Christ...
To Baptize meant to dip, immerse, or plunge into something.
It was often used of dipping a cup into a basin of water to draw a drink.
So, to be baptized meant to be immersed into Jesus Christ.
It was a full identification with Him.
So, any idea we have in our minds of some very casual commitment to Christ is out of step with all the New Testament is teaching us.
We don’t simply “give Jesus a try,” or have a distant and lax involvement with Him.
Jesus spoke in of the Christian life being an experience of “abiding” or “dwelling” in Him.
It is a full and complete surrender.
Identifying With His Death...
John 12:24 Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25 Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.
Buried With Him...
Buried with Him means there is a finality here.
A permanent turn from the past.

Your New Life in Christ Means You Have Arisen With Him

in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.

Newness of Life...
says that if we are in Christ, we are a new creation.
The old has passed away, and the new has come.

5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.

You must decide to align your life with the freedom you now have from sin as your master...

Align your life with the freedom you now have from the taskmaster of sin… Romans 6:6

6 We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.

20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Be brought to nothing...
This was the Greek word meaning to be brought to idleness or ineffectiveness.
To remove the foothold, in other words.
No longer to be at the mercy of it.
We discovered last Sunday how is still an experience we have in this life.

Resist giving in to the old labels… Romans 6:7-11

7 For one who has died has been set free from sin. 8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10 For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. 11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

Set free from sin...
It does not mean from the presence of sin, but from the rampant practice of sin.
1 John 1:9-10...

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

Not to be defined by sin any more.
To be ruthlessly committed to cutting out sin—
To lay aside every sin that clings to us— ; Corinthians 7:1
Resolving not to give in to the labels we are given...
1 Corinthians 4:3-5...

3 But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by any human court. In fact, I do not even judge myself. 4 For I am not aware of anything against myself, but I am not thereby acquitted. It is the Lord who judges me. 5 Therefore do not pronounce judgment before the time, before the Lord comes, who will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Then each one will receive his commendation from God.
