11 Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them; 12 for it is disgraceful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret. 13 But all things become visible when they are exposed by the light, for everything that becomes visible is light. 14 For this reason it says,
“Awake, sleeper,
And arise from the dead,
And Christ will shine on you.”
15 Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise,
The only reason that we are interested in what is well pleasing to the Lord is because we love Him. Love will not lead us to such a sanctified state. Only love
Gal…if we do not die to the law, we cannot live unto God.
If you are not interested in what pleases the Lord then I urge you to examine carefully your love for Him.
11 Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them;
have no joining together with /the unfruitful/ the deeds/ of /the darkness
we should not interject what we think is wrong but what is defined.
Those works which are accompanied with the evil works that we see in the Word of God, specifically from the beginning of this letter through the end.
Moral attributes are an application but not primary in this text. What do we wrestle against? Not flesh of blood, but power and principalities, it is light vs darkness.
The shame of this passage isn’t simply an evil work, but it is the mans love for that evil, for that darkness.
11 Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them;
12 for it is disgraceful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret.

Spiritual darkness leads to moral darkness
Spiritual light leads to moral light

13 But all things become visible when they are exposed by the light, for everything that becomes visible is light.
14 For this reason it says,
“Awake, sleeper,
And arise from the dead,
And Christ will shine on you.”
All Things: All things are covered in the Bible (good & bad). All that God has intended to expose to us, has been exposed in the Word of God. The Holy Spirit given text is the light shed. We do not add nor subtract from it.
become visible when exposed/reproved (reproved is an imperative…how do we reprove: Preach the Word…ex…you reprove works of darkness by looking at them through the light of the word of God.) by light (made manifest): the light of the Word
for whatsoever is made apparent is light. (what does make manifest is light)…is the means light or that which is made light?
When the light shines, that which is darkness (evil, wrong) is made apparent. We know what it is. It is clearly revealed.
The light is not your knowledge, but it is almighty God inseparable from His Word. As God is light, so His Word is light and we have the opportunity, yea even the duty to hold up that torch that we have been given. We are light holders of the Word of God.
“I believe that modern Christians are hardened against spiritual immorality” - Art Crawford
What is made apparent is now
14 For this reason it says,
“Awake, sleeper,
And arise from the dead,
And Christ will shine on you.”
14 As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming;
It says...God says - the Word says, the spirit and the word (the fruit of the word):
Ephesians 5:15...See then that you walk circumspectly...
1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the news about Jesus, 2 and said to his servants, “This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.”
3 For when Herod had John arrested, he bound him and put him in prison because of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip. 4 For John had been saying to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.” 5 Although Herod wanted to put him to death, he feared the crowd, because they regarded John as a prophet.
6 But when Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod, 7 so much that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked. 8 Having been prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.” 9 Although he was grieved, the king commanded it to be given because of his oaths, and because of his dinner guests. 10 He sent and had John beheaded in the prison. 11 And his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother. 12 His disciples came and took away the body and buried it; and they went and reported to Jesus.
13 Now when Jesus heard about John, He withdrew from there in a boat to a secluded place by Himself; and when the people heard of this, they followed Him on foot from the cities. 14 When He went ashore, He saw a large crowd, and felt compassion for them and healed their sick.
15 When it was evening, the disciples came to Him and said, “This place is desolate and the hour is already late; so send the crowds away, that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” 16 But Jesus said to them, “They do not need to go away; you give them something to eat!” 17 They said to Him, “We have here only five loaves and two fish.” 18 And He said, “Bring them here to Me.” 19 Ordering the people to sit down on the grass, He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up toward heaven, He blessed the food, and breaking the loaves He gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds, 20 and they all ate and were satisfied. They picked up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve full baskets. 21 There were about five thousand men who ate, besides women and children.
22 Immediately He made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side, while He sent the crowds away. 23 After He had sent the crowds away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray; and when it was evening, He was there alone. 24 But the boat was already a long distance from the land, battered by the waves; for the wind was contrary. 25 And in the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea. 26 When the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out in fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.”
28 Peter said to Him, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” 29 And He said, “Come!” And Peter got out of the boat, and walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But seeing the wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” 31 Immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and took hold of him, and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” 32 When they got into the boat, the wind stopped. 33 And those who were in the boat worshiped Him, saying, “You are certainly God’s Son!”
34 When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret. 35 And when the men of that place recognized Him, they sent word into all that surrounding district and brought to Him all who were sick; 36 and they implored Him that they might just touch the fringe of His cloak; and as many as touched it were cured.
The principle concern of reproving is self, it is more internal than external…if I am preaching darknes, then this passage applies to each of you, that you are circumspect in this.
Take heed what you hear/ Beware of the leven of the Pharasiees scribes,..... take heed how you build on… take heed…HEb 12
Bible Reading
Someone is sleeping and someone is dead. God then speaks.
Question: If you are sleeping and God enters the room and says wake up, would you wake up? If God says come forth from the grave, would you come forth?
Did David believe in the soverignty of God? Then why did he jusmp when Saul through the spear?
God commands us to wake up and to arise from the dead.
One who is sleeping is not dead in your language but in Gods
13 for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, because your faith is being proclaimed throughout the whole world.
This does not mean that you are going to hell. Living after the flesh rather puts you in a area of now communion with God, so that you are asleep, dead to the language the goodness of God.
Awake out of sleep, arise from the dead and Christ will shine on you...
The teaching:
The area of death - the old man
The area of life - the new man
Redemption - the finished work of Jesus Christ
The man that is being called too is not a child of the devil. God does not say to children of the devil wake up. God, the good shepherd calls to his own, “wake up”. God calls out to his children who have been beguiled, “wake up”…God calls out to his prodigals who have fallen asleep in the mud and mire of the world wake up. God calls out to his own foreknown and beloved whose communion has been put to death, and says arise, there is life, there is love, there is healing.
Not heaven and hell, but two spheres of experience for the child of God…the area of death and life, the old man and the new man.
11 and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life and attend to your own business and work with your hands, just as we commanded you, 12 so that you will behave properly toward outsiders and not be in any need.
13 But we do not want you to be uninformed, brethren, about those who are asleep, so that you will not grieve as do the rest who have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus. 15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore comfort one another with these words.
1 Thessalonians 4:11-
Fact 2= The living will be called up to be with Him
Fact 3=
Gal…if we do not die to the law, we cannot live unto God.
If you are not interested in what pleases the Lord then I urge you to examine carefully your love for Him.
