Four Responses to the Gospel

Matthew 13:3–9 ESV
And he told them many things in parables, saying: “A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them. Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil, but when the sun rose they were scorched. And since they had no root, they withered away. Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Other seeds fell on good soil and produced grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. He who has ears, let him hear.”
Luke 13:3–9 ESV
No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them: do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who lived in Jerusalem? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.” And he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none. And he said to the vinedresser, ‘Look, for three years now I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and I find none. Cut it down. Why should it use up the ground?’ And he answered him, ‘Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and put on manure. Then if it should bear fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.’ ”
Luke 13:3-
What is a sower?
farmer casting out seeds
threw them everywhere
This is how the Gospel is spread, it is thrown everywhere, spread all around
1st response:
Matthew 13:4 ESV
And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them.
What does this even mean?
Jesus gives understanding to this Parable
Matthew 13:18–19 ESV
“Hear then the parable of the sower: When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is what was sown along the path.
Those that completely reject the Gospel
no desire for God, His Word, or the redemption of Christ
Mock it, consider it foolish
try to disprove it
Psalm 53:1 ESV
The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, doing abominable iniquity; there is none who does good.
Proverbs 14:9 ESV
Fools mock at the guilt offering, but the upright enjoy acceptance.
Proverbs 18:2 ESV
A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion.
2nd response:
Matthew 13:5–6 ESV
Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil, but when the sun rose they were scorched. And since they had no root, they withered away.
Jesus gives clarity into this statement
Matthew 13:
Matthew 13:20–21 ESV
As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away.
Those that like the idea of the benefits of the Gospel
The Professor Raddison’s - God’s Not Dead
“If God does this for me, I will serve Him.”
Conditional contractional relationship with God
These are the Israelites wandering in the desert
God got us out of captivity
He led us into the desert to die!
Who has heard the traditional marriage vows?
is it not strange the negative aspects in the vows?
John 6:25–26 ESV
When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?” Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves.
Jesus talks about Him being the bread of Life
John 6:66 ESV
After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him.
3rd Response:
Matthew 13:7 ESV
Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them.
Jesus answers this
Matthew 13:
Matthew 13:22 ESV
As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful.
Matthew 13:
This is the person to whom:
The Gospel is intriguing
May attend church and operate within Christian circles
The draw of the world proves a greater love than to God
The rich young ruler:
what must I do to be saved
Luke 18:22–23 ESV
When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” But when he heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely rich.
Luke 18:
4th Response:
Matthew 13:8 ESV
Other seeds fell on good soil and produced grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.
Jesus Explains
Matthew 13:
Matthew 13:23 ESV
As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.”
Matthew 13:
How does a seed produce grain 100, 60, or 30 fold?
the single seed produces plants that will produce more seeds that will produce more plants to produce more seeds
This is the fulfillment of the Great Comission
Matthew 28:19–20 ESV
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
