5-step progress of “who Jesus is”

• He is a man, 9:11

• He is a prophet, 9:17

• He is worthy of allegiance, 9:27

• He is from God, 9:33

• He is God, 9:38

Sheepfold (this is the heart of the story)

• Improvised

• Cave

• Permanent (this is what is in mind in the passage)

o Entry of the shepherd (the fold is Israel)

o Entry of sheep (the fold is salvation)

The application of the parable, 10:7-18

• The door, vv. 7-10

• Good shepherd, vv. 11-18

John 10:7-10

• Jesus alone is the door, v. 7 (emphatic ”I”)

• The false never stop, v. 8

• Access through Christ, v. 9

o “Enter in”—aorist tense—initial salvation (justification)

o “Might have life”—future tense—fellowship after justification

 Life and abundant life, v. 10

• Abundance through Christ, v. 10

o This is all eternal life (that is my take)

Shepherd

• Good—because He died for the sheep, John 10:11

• Great—because He lives for the sheep, Hebrews 13:20

• Chief—because He is coming for the sheep, I Peter 5:4

The perfection of the shepherd, vv. 11-18

• His sacrifice, vv. 11-13

• His knowledge, vv. 14-16

• His control, vv. 17-18
