The Context
Christians are the benefactors of God’s abounding love. He has lavished his love on you when he saved you. We did nothing to earn or deserve this but it was all of grace. We have such privileged in Jesus and this is our motivation to live in obedience to his commands. This includes the responsibility of parenthood. We are called by God to be his stewards over the training of our Children.

There Is Hope For Parental Training
18 Discipline your son, for there is hope; do not set your heart on putting him to death.
17 Leah’s eyes were weak, but Rachel was beautiful in form and appearance.
17 Discipline your son, and he will give you rest; he will give delight to your heart.
Main Themes
God desires that his worship be continued. It’s not enough for me to be a worshipper but I must seek for others to honor God, and worship him. Abraham was chosen, because he would command his children.

It is With The Goal Of Balance Nurture
“Do not provoke,… bring them up.”
The emphasis seems to be on the character of a father’s training of his children. It’s not to be characterized by a rough, exacting, excacerbating type of authority over his children causing them to become angry, frustrated and discouraged by unfair treatment but in stead he is to be nurturing them.
Provoke not your children to wrath - That is, by unreasonable commands; by needless severity; by the manifestation of anger. So govern them, and so punish them - if punishment is necessary - that they shall not lose their confidence in you, but shall love you. Barnes
The father’s training is to be like what a nursing mother does for her child. She lovingly provides them with what will help them grow, her milk. Parents are to nurture their children.
Make it so that your training is reasonable. If they are to obey you, make it so that your instructions are easy to be obeyed.
It is Holistic
Not just a head full of theology, but practical godliness as well.

i. Particularly with Parents
Enforcing obedience and training them to be under your rule is nurturing your Child!
15 The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a child left to himself brings shame to his mother. 16 When the wicked increase, transgression increases, but the righteous will look upon their downfall. 17 Discipline your son, and he will give you rest; he will give delight to your heart.

28 A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.
3 A whip for the horse, a bridle for the donkey, and a rod for the back of fools.
32 Whoever is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.
c. To Walk in the Means of Grace (Read, pray, To Understand their Responsibility to Trust Christ
Objection: a child can’t obey the Lord until he is saved.
Answer: Where’s that in the Bible? Just because we aren’t saved by obedience, doesn’t mean we don’t learn to walk in obedience or can’t learn some of the joys of obedience.
a. I’m not saved by obedience, but I’m called to obey. (Just don’t trust in your obedience to satisfy God’s standard)
b. Spiritual Deadness doesn’t mean absolute deadness! I can obey to a degree the commands of Jesus and enjoy their benefits.

A Parent Under Authority
A Parent Under Authority
“Of the Lord” for him, for his glory.
He is the source of authority and ultimate aim. You are not your child’s source and possessor of authority to determine truth and duty.
We make God in Christ the teacher and ruler on whose authority everything is to be believed and in obedience to whose will everything is to be done.
