But one in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man, that thou visitest him?” (, KJV 1900)
This is quoted from:
What is man, that thou art mindful of him? And the son of man, that thou visitest him? For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, And hast crowned him with glory and honour. Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; Thou hast put all things under his feet:” (, KJV 1900)
This verse brings to light one of the most basic and fundamental questions of philosophy: “Who am I?”
We know the author of Hebrews is using this Psalm to lift up Christ and put us in our proper place— I don’t want to take away from that at all - Christ is preeminent. He is to be exalted.
But at the same time - I don’t think there is any harm in musing on “WHO AM I?”
Rusty Goodman answered that question this way:
When I think of how He came so far from glory Came to dwell among the lowly such as I To suffer shame and such disgrace On Mount Calvary take my place Then I ask myself this question Who am I?
When I'm reminded of His words I'll leave Him never If you'll be true I'll give to you life forever Oh I wonder what I could have done To deserve God's only Son To fight my battles until they're won For who am I?
When I'm reminded of His words I'll leave Him never If you'll be true I'll give to you life forever Oh I wonder what I could have done To deserve God's only Son To fight my battles until they're won For who am I?
Who am I that The King would bleed and die for Who am I that He would pray not my will, Thy Lord The answer I may never know Why He ever loved me so But to that old rugged cross He'd go For who am I? But to an old rugged cross He'd go for, who am I?
The Psalmist did and he gives a little different spin on his meaning that the Hebrews author.
So I want to give us seven brief answers to this question of “What is man?” or “Who Am I?”

1. Who Am I? I am made in God’s image.

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” (, KJV 1900)
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” (, KJV 1900)
Imago Dei [Uh-mog-Oh Day] The image of God - I like what John Piper says on this -
The imago Dei is not a quality possessed by man; it is a condition in which man lives, a condition of confrontation established and maintained by the Creator. … The imago Dei is that in man which constitutes him as him-whom-God-loves.
Now please note this does not mean we are gods, nor does it mean we are the image of God - but we are made in the image of God or “created in correspondence with the image of God.”

2. Who am I? I am loved by God.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (, KJV 1900)

3. Who am I? I am a Grace Receiver.

But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.” (, KJV 1900)

4. Who am I? I am bought by the blood of Jesus Christ

Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:” (, KJV 1900)

5. Who am I? I am In Christ

Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:” (, KJV 1900)

6. Who am I? I am a servant of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.” (, KJV 1900)

7. Who am I? I am on my way to heaven.

But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.” (, KJV 1900)
Seven things to help us identify who we are. I hope you see yourself in this picture this morning.
But I want you to notice something - Out of all seven answers - not one was man the originator of the answer.
It is not because of us it is because of God.
Casting Crowns sang a song with this title that had in the chorus these words:
Not because of who I am But because of what you've done Not because of what I've done But because of who you are
