LAST WEEK
We looked at some deep issues that were affecting the Corinthian Church
We saw the disorder, the lack of leadership, and the lack of spiritual maturity that existed in Corinth.
We also looked at the details concerning communion
THIS WEEK
THIS WEEK
We are going to look at a very interesting part of the Christian Life
An area that is often debated by scholars and theologians
An area that is sometimes abused and sometimes ignored
But an area that can bring us all together, and make us better.
LETS TURN TO
LETS TURN TO
1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant: 2 You know that you were Gentiles, carried away to these dumb idols, however you were led. 3 Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.
4 There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: 8 for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.
12 For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ. 13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit. 14 For in fact the body is not one member but many.
15 If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I am not of the body,” is it therefore not of the body? 16 And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I am not of the body,” is it therefore not of the body? 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would be the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where would be the smelling? 18 But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body just as He pleased. 19 And if they were all one member, where would the body be?
20 But now indeed there are many members, yet one body. 21 And the eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you”; nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” 22 No, much rather, those members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary. 23 And those members of the body which we think to be less honorable, on these we bestow greater honor; and our unpresentable parts have greater modesty, 24 but our presentable parts have no need. But God composed the body, having given greater honor to that part which lacks it, 25 that there should be no schism in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another. 26 And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.
27 Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually. 28 And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But earnestly desire the best gifts. And yet I show you a more excellent way.

1 cor 12:
PAUL PREFACES THIS CONVERSATION BY BRINGING TO LIGHT SOME MISCONCEPTIONS
HE SAYS:
CONCERNING SPIRITUAL GIFTS
PLEASE DO NOT BE IGNORANT
Please do not ignore these gifts
Please do not disregard these spiritual gifts
YOU WERE ONCE GENTILES
CARRIED AWAY BY LIFELESS IDOLS
Though you know what this is like
Though you used to be entangled in such practices
I want you to know that as a follower of Christ, things should be different.
When it comes to a word of God
When it comes to a word of God
When it comes to Holy and Divine Words from God
No one who proclaims to be speaking by the Spirit of God will call Jesus accursed.
No one speaking by the Holy Spirit will blaspheme the name of Jesus
Will make Jesus less than
Will curse the name and work of Jesus
CHURCH, PAUL IS REVEALING TO US THE NATURE OF THE UNBELIEVER.
HE LET’S US KNOW THAT IT IS SPIRITUALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO CURSE THE NAME OF JESUS, AND SAY THAT HE IS YOUR LORD AND SAVIOR
PAUL SAYS SOMETHING INTERESTING:
HE SAYS:
“NO ONE CAN SAY THAT JESUS IS LORD EXCEPT BY THE HOLY SPIRIT”
This is a major key to understanding salvation
Such a valuable truth by which
I don’t know about you, but I love the Holy Spirit
He comes in clutch on the regular and I love it.
To help us better understand the Holy Spirit I want to share with you the three ways in which the Holy Spirit is imparted to humanity.
#1 Para
The Holy Spirit comes alongside humanity to proclaim its sinfulness, to clarify what righteousness is, and the reality of the coming judgement
8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
#2 En
This happens when the truth about Jesus becomes real to us
When we allow the Holy Spirit to begin shaping us into the image of Christ.
This first happened when Jesus breathed on the disciples and told them to receive the Holy Spirit.
This first happened when Jesus breathed on the disciples and told them to receive the Holy Spirit.
#3 Epi
This is also known as the Baptism of the Holy Spirit
Where the Holy Spirit is doing the sanctification work
But also using the individual to be a witness throughout the world
This first happened at pentecost.
Paul, in this text, is bringing clarity to the role of the Holy Spirit when it comes to salvation.
He is telling us that the Holy Spirit is the defining factor when confirming one’s salvation
If you
You cannot proclaim that Jesus is Lord without the Holy Spirit
ONE THING WE HAVE TO KEEP IN MIND IS THAT HAVING THE HOLY SPIRIT CAN CONFIRM YOUR SALVATION
ONE THING WE HAVE TO KEEP IN MIND IS THAT HAVING THE HOLY SPIRIT CAN CONFIRM YOUR SALVATION
But, I would venture to ask
Is that what we are satisfied with?
IT IS THE CHANNEL THROUGH WHICH WE ARE BOLDER WITNESSES
Is that all that God desires of us?
THE CONDUIT THROUGH WHICH THE WORLD COMES TO KNOW ABOUT JESUS
Or is there more?
FRIENDS, I BELIEVE THAT WE ARE SAVED, NOT JUST TO POPULATE HEAVEN, BUT TO UNPOPULATE HELL
BUT TO UNPOPULATE HELL
NOT JUST FOR US TO ENTER IN, BUT TO BE WITNESSES THROUGHOUT THE WORLD, THAT OTHERS DESTINED TO HELL WOULD BE RESCUED BY THE GRACE AND LOVE OF JESUS CHRIST
WITH THIS SALVATION COMES OTHER GIFTS
THIS IS WHY GOD SAVES PEOPLE
THIS IS WHY GOD GIVES GIFTS TO PEOPLE
SO THAT THE CHURCH IS EQUIPPED FOR THE WORK OF THE MINISTRY
BUT THIS IS WHY GOD SAVES PEOPLE
SO THAT THE CHURCH THRIVES
THIS IS WHY GOD GIVES GIFTS TO PEOPLE
GIFTS THAT BENEFIT THE WHOLE CHURCH
SO THAT THE CHURCH IS EQUIPPED FOR THE WORK OF THE MINISTRY
SO THAT THE CHURH GROWS
SO THAT THE CHURCH THRIVES
SO THAT THE CHURH GROWS

HOW?
1 COR 12:12-
THE HOLY SPIRIT DOES SOMETHING SPECIAL WITH PEOPLE WHO MAKE THEMSELVES AVAILABLE
THE SPIRIT DOESN’T JUST CONFIRM YOUR SALVATION
THE SPIRIT BEGINS A DEEPER WORK
A WORK THAT MAKES CHURCH BETTER
HOW?
THE SPIRIT BEGINS TO DISPERSE VARIOUS GIFTS TO THE CHURCH
DIFFERING GIFTS, GIVEN BY THE SAME SPIRIT
CREATING DIFFERING MINISTRIES, BUT FOR THE SAME LORD
MANY ACTIVITIES WITHIN THE CHURCH, BUT ALL FOR GOD WHO WORKS ALL IN ALL.
THE KEY TO OUR GIFTS IS RECOGNIZING THEY HAVE A GREATER PURPOSE
Friends, the gifts that God has given you are not just for you
They are given for you to administer them to the greater body of Christ
THEY ARE FOR THE PROFIT OF ALL
Whether it is a word of wisdom
A Word of Knowledge
Faith to encourage people with
Gifts of healing
Working Miracles
Prophecy
Disscernment
Different kinds of Tongues
Interpretation of Tongues
THESE ARE ALL FOR THE GLORY OF GOD
HOW WE GIVE GOD GLORY WITH OUR GIFTS IS BY BEING A GOOD STEWARD OF THESE GIFTS
THEY HAVE BEEN GIVEN TO YOU TO STEWARD THEM
TO BLESS THE CHURCH WITH
One of the reasons that the church lacks power, is because we are being stingy with our gifts.
IF WE DON’T ENCOURAGE ONE ANOTHER WITH OUR GIFT
We are being selfish and bad stewards of our gift.
But not only that, it is to the detriment of the Church.
PAUL TAKES US TO 30,000 FEET AND GIVES US ANOTHER PICTURE
HE SAYS:
Every part of the body has a special purpose
The heart has one job
To pump blood into our muscles
Why?
So they can move your limbs to do the work
The Heart isn’t doing the work
The muscles aren’t doing the work
But they are aiding your members to do the work
To get up
To breathe
To live
The heart isn’t jealous of the blood, it works with the blood
The Blood isn’t jealous of the muscles, it nourishes the muscles
The muscles aren’t jealous of the limbs, it helps the limbs accomplish the task
THEY ALL WORK TOGETHER, DOING WHAT THEY DO BEST, FOR THE SAKE OF THE BODY
So to us
Are called to do what we do best
To administer our gifts to the body of Christ
Not comparing ourselves with others
But praising God that we have others to lean on to do the job better.
FRIENDS, WE HAVE ALL BEEN CREATED FOR HIS GLORY
SOME OF US ARE THRIVING IN THIS
OTHERS ARE STILL TRYING TO FIND THEIR WAY
That’s ok
The faster you ca
All we can do is encourage them in the curiosity of their gift
They will never know what their gift is if they are not encouraged to try.
That’s why God has placed us in their life
To encourage them
To love them
To give them a word of wisdom or knowledge
To prophecy into their lives
Yes its scary
You know why?
Because our intuition my be right
God may be speaking to us about someone elses future for a reason
What that reason is, only God knows.
:20-
20 But now indeed there are many members, yet one body.
PAUL IS TRYING TO OPEN UP THE EYES OF THE CHURCH
WHAT HE IS TRYING TO TELL US IS SO CLEAR
WE NEED EACH OTHER
I NEED RANDY, AND ABE, AND CHRIS, AND HANNAH
Because I can’t sing
Because I can’t be in two places at once
I NEED NIKALUS
Because
As a church
We cannot say about one another “I have no need of you”
We are one body
We are family
Even if you believe you’re weak
Even if you believe you’re not necessary
Paul says
On these members we bestow greater honor
On these we bring greater value
If one member suffers
Guess what?
We all suffe
