Discipleship (6 G's), Part 1: Gospel & Glory
Well, I think it's appropriate this morning that we have an opportunity to celebrate the goodness of God and all that he's done and we want to do that afterwards. We actually have for everybody in the congregation. We've ordered some Jamba Juice because supposed to be smoking hot outside and we thought maybe that's a better way to celebrate outside then hot coffee afterwards. So afterwards we some Jamba Juice for you guys out there and I hope that you guys enjoy that the gift from our staff to you guys passed out to the kids at 3. Just take one and that will be a great opportunity for us to sit back and reflect about the goodness that God has done for our church over these past couple years. And I thought OK Google. What would I want to say to the congregation as we begin this celebration? So tell you guys might my thought process in getting to where we are going to be going to a three-week series on discipleship probably at the back to beginning of this year. So did you read a lot of material on discipleship and it just really excited my heart because God's very clear when he gives to us his word and directions for the church that are golden mission is to Go Make Disciples and teach them to obey all that Christ has commanded us and baptizing those disciples as well. It's very clear what we do so as I'm reading that stuff and then I just I read stuff brought about companies that are very successful companies that are very successful are always accompanies that stick to their mission and their values and they don't deviate from that. They stay simple and focused on what they're designed to do. If you click on our website, it says this we exist to glorify God by making disciples of Jesus Christ because we don't want to do anything else. We don't want to get caught up inside like Pastor. Jesse said we don't get distracted from the great and What discipleship really is so I was I was reading all of that and I'm just mad I was really excited. I almost started to preach that serious then but then God did something very very interesting and I'm kind of tragic in the Church of God. Didn't know if you know the name Joshua Harris and I only say that out loud because he's a famous Pastor who on his own Instagram when I'm proclaimed. I'm no longer a Christian. I don't believe the stuff that I used to believe anymore. That's that's not who I am. I'm going to start my own course. I'm going to go through A, New Path when tragic things like that happen. You got to sit back and ask. Why does that take place? But you didn't just stop there from a famous Pastor. See I told you guys about a trial that I was going through with my family a family member abandon the faces well during that time. To somebody that I've looked at somebody that I've hugged something that I've Loved some of that I've done Ministry with. Just walked away from the face. So I don't believe anyone not a Christian not only a family member, but probably within weeks of it a friend of mine did the exact same thing. It is devastating to see people walk away from the face. So the Bible calls apostasy, if you know that the word apostasy and it's something that means to fall away from you repudiate you renounce you abandon something that you wants professed is very important that you describe it that way when you say apostasy abandon the face that you once professed because professing us a face and possessing it are two very different things. There are people who can come into churches and they can profess to know God and they can look like they know God and they can act like they know God but they will follow me because they don't possess what the Bible says true salvation is so all that was going on and I just began to feel the devastation of people walking away from the faith. But then I focus on discipleship came back to me was a great comfort making true Disciples of Jesus Christ is the answer to that apostasy not accepting just somebody as a mere profession of Faith but really doing the work that the Bible says discipleship is investing the things that the scripture say is going to be the the medicine that the church needs to make sure that we're not just taking that the testimony of somebody just because they say, oh, I'm a Christian and I believe that we want to know dude. Are you a disciple? Do you know what discipleship is are you actively involved in that because if you don't think this is important just wait till somebody loves says I'm leaving Christianity anymore about the devastation of that does to the reputation of Jesus Christ and just think what that does to families as it rips them apart to think about the good work that God can do when he begins to bring a church that's fruitful and making true Disciples of Jesus Christ. Occasionally come to shock to us that there are apostates right if you read the New Testament at all, you will find out that Jesus said that's going to happen throughout the the course of church history. Even if you've done with us in the study of the Gospel of Mark think about the parable of the seed and sower remember that Parable it's not just black and white is it it's not there is bad soil and good soil and other you throw it and they don't get saved or you throw it and they do get saved there. Is that that range that almost gray area in between because there are three positive responses to the gospel in Mark chapter 4, there were three different soils that receive the word and some of it receive it with joy, but only one Springs up true salvation in that sense. The other one has persecution has tribulations or the things of this world that choked up that profess faith that is really false faith. And again, you could trace phosphate throughout the Bible the book of The Gospel of John the gospel of the Epistle of James. It will talk about this reality of what false faith is. It's a difference between false faith in real faith and we'll get into that. We should be shocked by it. Probably the best way to say this 1st John 2:19 1st. John 2:19 is they went out from us Kay talking about apostates. They went out from us why because they were not really of us you see the distinction between someone who professes of faith in somebody who possesses it somebody who just is a professor of Faith. All they're going to do in that sense. It's will be there and then something is going to distract something is going to take away. Something is going to pull them from this but I say, I don't want that anymore, but the person who's been bought by the blood of Jesus Christ and saved by the grace of God been invested with the holy spirit with other ones were going to stay of us because they're really of the body Christ as you listen to the book of Hebrews as we read through it in our in our scripture reading you hear those those warnings those strong ones that come all throughout the Book of Hebrews. Those are warnings against apostasy. Do not do what some people have done when it gets hard do not give up just because the the persecution comes with the tribulation comes or any of this comes don't give up because what you're doing is going to make shipwreck of the faith you want super fast, but then it gives such great confidence in the book of Hebrews about Christ intercession for you and how he's able to save to the uttermost those who truly come to him in real genuine saving Faith cuz we should be a church that is focused on discipleship know why would I talk about discipleship and apostasy when we have a time of Celebration Station of that I'll Paso Jesse and I we have the great privilege that some of you in the crowd have gone to a premarital program. It's a joy to do a wedding you get there to watch and celebrate God. Two people together, but you know what we do when we get together and we talk about the joy of coming together as far as a husband and wife in the beautiful picture that is in the roles that God has for men and women. It's just it's a great time to Celebration. But, you know, we talked about during those times to the reality of divorce. And the reality of entering into something a sacred as marriage if you're really selfish motives and what that is going to do ultimately if that ends up breaking up that marriage you want to talk about that reality because it's there and you want those people to realize that this isn't something that I I walk into casually that I tread lightly on in that sense because it's such a sacred Covenant Christian relationship with God is described as a marriage relationships as described as a covenant. So why wouldn't we when we talked about making disciples just talked about the reality that there are some people who will walk away and then walk away because they don't have real face and we want to make sure that that is never the case with the the disciples that we produce here. I think I told you at the beginning of Summer though. There was a poll done by Barner that 51% of the people who go to church don't know what the Great Commission is. Over half the people who attend churches today. And again, that's a broad range of churches. I don't know what the confession of their view of the Bible if you've got or anything like that, but just people go to church you ask them. What is the Great Commission 51% of people don't even know so how is the church supposed to grow if half the people who come have no idea what the Great Commission is and the half that do know. They don't know where to find it in the Bible. Matthew 28 18 to 20 is a Great Commission. Jesus sends the disciples into the world what based on his authority go and make disciples of all Nations baptizing to teach him to obey all that. I've commanded you and lo I Am With You Always even to the end of the age. Do you hear how great that promises for Jesus to be with us and he's promised to build his church and he's going to do so through discipleship. So I think it's up to us to make sure that we understand that Hazard Hazard Mission. I think you can understand that it is half. The people are kind of unclear on what discipleship is in the making of disciples white churches can be so ineffective in that. To get the filtration at the the men's meeting last week, but I think it's helpful for us this morning and why that happens see when you watch a game today. Like if you go home this afternoon and you can have if you have the right amount of time between when service stops and prayer meeting to watch the Rams dismantle the Saints you have that time, so, don't worry guys. It's going to happen today. If you watch the the Rams when they win their on their March to the Superbowl this year which will happen. We're just excited for that. But we see two types of people at the beginning to watch the pregame. They're doing all these different things and they always show two shots. They show how the attendees enter the stadium and they show how the athletes enter the stadium. See attendees when they enter the stadium there's not like a lot of purpose in the way. They enter it there. Just kind of walking Meander. You see some of them talking outside some of them on the phone when they get into the stadium. They might spend some time Meandering around the gift shops. They might go to the snack bar. I might do a number of different things. There's no urgency and what they do, there's not really a lot of purpose they can even miss the tip-off and it would be okay if the game's going to go on without them whether they are there or not. They're just showing up as an attendee. What happens when you watch an athlete into the stadium? There is a serjeant focus that they have to get to where they want to go somewhere even have headphones so they don't want to be distracted because they have a mission and purpose in their mind. They studied a game plan. They realize what they want to do. They know that it depended upon them to go out into the court and perform that sold their team can win. Why do you think the Bible compared to Christian Life to an athlete so much? Because the the Bible is not really looking for a lot of attendees to come to church and just to kind of Meandering and just let Church go on around them. If I was talking about athletes coming in and jumping in and when you do that, you're an active part of what a disciple is, but I think you and I need to be on the same page with what that is. Do I want to do right now? I think you got a little intro spot on your outline right there. I'm going to give you a definition of what I think discipleship is and then I want to talk briefly about it. And then over the next 3 weeks. We're going to break this down in we're going to show how this is going to help us. Hopefully is a church stay true to what God has blessed us with that the privilege of making disciples to turn your Bibles to Luke chapter 6 verse for Luke chapter 6 verse 40 good place for us to start just so we can get a idea of the definition of discipleship and what a disciple is and should be aiming at
Luke chapter 6 verse 42 scriptures today as we do that. I hope that you be able to write them down and we will talk about them when you get your small groups. Luke chapter 6 verse 40. I'm going to read it for you. Listen to this a disciple is not above his teacher. But when he is fully trained will be like his teacher. That's why we're going to start to pull our definition of what discipleship is. If you want to write this down you write down. The definition is going to be a lot of us as this is brought to you by the letter s. Okay. This definition is brought to you by the letter s a definition of discipleship is this students striving to be like the Savior who save them? Discipleship is students striving to be like the Savior who save them. And as we break down these six components over the next couple of weeks, you will see how all of them fit into that definition write their students striving to be like the Savior who save them. Now. How did I come to that definition? Look at Luke 6:40, you see the word disciple there and if you've been with us in the study of the Gospel of Mark, you know that we've had that the term disciple in there that comes from the Greek word Matt, they taste which simply means learner. Student pupil that it's somebody who's coming to acquire knowledge, but it's not just me or head now. It's just not just intellectual knowledge. It is knowledge that they're about to make their their business their way of life like an apprentice would go and they would learn a trade from somebody. They're not coming just to say all that's interesting to write that down and then not apply. That's where their livelihood is going to come from. So there is this intellectual components but it is a transformation transformational intellectual component that strives to conform you to something so we get that first part students and we say a plural because discipleship has to happen in community. It could be as simple as one-on-one. It could be one on 6th. It could be a whole group of small group of people coming together in that sense, but it's going to happen in community. So we always want to have it there in the pleural students striving. You see that in the word fully trained right fully trained as a training component to it a very interesting this word for fully trained talks about like a machine that's fully competent to do what its design. Do what's a good way to think about this when the disciple is brought to the the maturity of what they're designed to do. They're going to go out of the going to make more disciples the way that they were made into a disciple can be a process as we talked about. It's a student striving to be like the Savior who save them. Did you catch that phrase when he's fully trained will what will be like his teacher? That's what's going to happen in the Christian Life when you become a Christian which we will talk about that in the moment when you realize your need of God's forgiveness when you realize you can't save yourself when you realize that the wrath of God is righteously on you because you send against him and him alone and you cry out for mercy and Grace and because of the Cross burial and resurrection of Jesus you're accepted in the kingdom of God. Once you're in there the goal of your salvation according to Romans 8 is to be conformed to the image of God son to become like him. And so Jesus is saying any form of discipleship when it's done rightly. You will start to look like the teacher who's investing in you. That's very important for us because we always want to be a me as a church. Not just a gospel that gives some people fire insurance, but that transformational gospel is going to take people and it's going to make them look more like Jesus Christ. Can you think of anything better? Like if you really love the Gospel of Jesus Christ and you know how merciful and gracious he is and the fact that him giving you the Holy Spirit can begin to before you said that when people look at you, they see a likeness and a close image to Jesus Christ. That is an amazing thing that discipleship is going to produce but we never again want to think that it's about us making herself look like Jesus in order for God to save us. That's why the last part of the definition is stress with that double emphasis the Savior who saved them the Savior who saved them if we talked about a savior we need to talk about what we're safe from and that's the wrath of God and that's something that we could not do ourselves. So inherently in this definition, we realize it's never about us it has to be there was a savior and I love this phrase that saved us the definite nature of it. We're talking about something that cannot be taken from you. We're talking about something that when the gospel is received by genuine repentance and Faith. You cannot be snatched out of the father's hand according to John chapter 10. This is a definite salvation that will continue to grow as you move into greater christlikeness. So that's what I say discipleship is and if you look up here on the screen, there are these six components that as I've just study through the gospel of Mark together. I've pulled these out as the ways that we develop these different areas of this definition cuz I'm going to make sure that we have it. So my goal in US looking at this is that if you have believed that this is what discipleship is that this will reaffirm in your heart and your mind that this is the purpose of why we come to church while you gather at small groups while you pray for people while you do any sort of ministry. It's to be there in discipleship. I want to reaffirm that in you And if you've gone astray in any version of discipleship, I hope it realigns you back to what the Bible says it if you become apathetic at any point in this outfit reinvigorate your heart to do what God is calling you to do but something very important puppy needs to be set because after I show you from Mark where I'm getting these things so, you know, it's not me. This is Jesus telling you this is what a disciple is. I then want to go to the Epistles of the New Testament and I want to say this is exactly what the Epistles are telling you to do. And that actually is very difficult because I don't know maybe we could we could maybe have a price up here and if you could raise your hand and tell me how many times a Christian is called a disciple after the book of Acts? After book bags, how many times does a Christian labeled a disciple? Do? You know how many I think it is 0 There is no place where a Christian then after the book of Acts is called a disciple doesn't use that language in his letters very interesting. So if it's the church's mission that Jesus gave to them and ask you 28, then why do we see in this you no dearth of information about what the church should be doing? Why are we missing Christians being called Disciples of two things for you there. To think will hopefully help you. Just because something is called something different does it mean that you're getting a different product explain it to you, but my family is from the Midwest. And I think it's it's scientifically proven that the correct name for the the beverage that is a cold and a bubbly and carbonated is pop right? That's what you call it. When you're from the Midwest you call Pop because that's what science says. You should call this pop. There's a pop sound when you make it. Why would you call it anything else? It's called pop what happens when you come out here wackos and California soda, the soda first time I come from the Midwest and I go to a restaurant I go. Give me a pop. And I like what you want to punch you in the face Poppy and knows what what's going on here at lunch with my friend who's already transplanted out here. He goes out out here. It's called soda. So they're going to pour me this the same products going to be in the cup, but you different context call different things. I think if you take that logic and apply it to the Epistles in the gospels, you're going to see that they're producing the same thing that is very similar language. They just called something different. What is Paul call it Paul calls discipleship presenting people mature in Christ or conforming to the image of Christ or imitating Christ be like the Savior who stays and that's what Paul is going to say, but it's just called something different. You're getting the same product. It's just called something different. But that doesn't suffice for you. You're something very cool as you will read through the Epistles. You won't see like the the Christians called Disciples, but you will watch what Paul does that's called. I had you learn something and uses the verb form of Matthew taste not a tonneau then so like Philippians 4:9 whatever you have heard and seen or learned and receive that word learned is is a verb form of disciple you learn that from me you sat down and I taught you and then you imitate it in me and then pulse is ultimately as I imitate, who as I imitate Christ. So all of this is producing the same thing. It's just it's just called something different. But still that that verb is used by Paul over and over again. Say you learn that from me. So the discipleship process is a learning process student striving together to become more like Jesus Christ. So what then are the components we have the 60s gospel goal Grace group grit and glory for some of you and then spin assure. You should look at those metal components and and think wow we've looked at those before that's how we tried to grow last year in our in our series of of steadfastness and wanting to be like those athlete or self-controlled and the reason why I begin to see that as working is because those are the very things that Jesus instilled in discipleship, but I saw that they were missing two key components the gospel and Glory that bookend this to make sure that this is not something that we ever learn but we're brought in by grace through faith to enter into that. So as we look at discipleship want you turn with me the gospel of Mark when I look at chapter one way to find out what it means. To have the Gospel Drive our discipleship. The gospel driver discipleship. What is Jesus A discipleship is what are the components that we need? And how can we utilize that to stay focused on the mission that we have at hand? Mark chapter 1 verse 14 and 15
This is now after John was arrested. Jesus came into Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God and saying the time is fulfilled the kingdom of God is at hand repent and believe in the gospel. So that is what Jesus says is of primary importance in his ministry. I'm here and what I'm here to do is tell you that the kingdom of God is at hand and sinners who are at war with the kingdom of God can actually be welcomed into the kingdom of God through repentance and Faith. That's what I'm here to Proclaim so much so that if you remember that at the end of that chapter, Jesus is praying and he's begging God to keep him focused and Peter comes verse 36 and says everyone is looking for you and what a Jesus a verse 38. Let us go on to the next town that I may preach. They're also for this is why I came Jesus wasn't there just to put on this miraculous show as we talked about. He doesn't just want people to be in. Awe does what he does. He wants their allegiance to repentance and Faith to come into the kingdom of God to stop the enmity that is separating a holy God and sinful man, and they do so through repentance and faith. And what does he do with the disciples? Look at chapter 3 verse 13 Mark 3 verse 13
And he went up on the mountain and called to him Those whom he desired and they came to him and he appointed 12 for me also named Apostles so that they might be with him and they might send and that he might send them out to preach and have authority to cast out demons. And then he pointed the ones that he said, he's already called back from chapter one where he called those Peter Andrew James and John and he called us becomes Fishers of Men member that's going to be their occupation of used to chase after fish. They're going to chase after the souls of men and that's why I'm calling these 12 disciples because you're going to be with me and I'm going to teach you how to fish for men's souls and you're going to go out then and Proclaim this gospel. That's what I'm giving you this to do. So he gave that to them then chapter 6. Look at this chapter 6 verse I think it's 14 chapter 614.
Matthew Mark chapter 6 verse 14 talking again about the disciples Oh, no, 12612 Mark 6 12. Please give me the massage. She said them out notice. He sends them out in Paris right students together plural students going together to buy to Denver supposed to sit still they went out and proclaimed that people should attend. The role of the disciple is to believe the gospel be saved by grace through faith come into the kingdom of God, and now you've been entrusted with that message to go out and proclaim the gospel that other people should repent in that sense. But what is the essence of the Gospel? What is what is Jesus say it is going on in the gospel. Turn the Mark 10:45 cuz we looked at that briefly little while ago Mark 10. 45
Mark 10:45, what is taking place? When we Proclaim this gospel? What are we saying is happening? Mark 10:45 for even the son of man came not to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many to that. Last phrase is telling you what takes place in the gospel. Jesus is giving his life in order to be a ransom for many and we studied that text. I told you that that calls back to Isaiah 53 verse 12, Isaiah 53 is all about the suffering servant who would come and die and suffer for sins, but they were not sins of his own he suffered for the sins of other people and that's suffering allows those people to come into communion with God allowed to be a relationship between a holy God in an Unholy people. And that's a great news that we have in the Gospel of Jesus Christ this substitution that takes place that Jesus who came and lived a perfect life so that he earned no wages of sin that equal death. He didn't have to die in that sense for his own sins because he had none and so being that perfect substitute. If God can stay righteous by punishing Jesus for our sins. He can rightly then let us come into the kingdom but being wholly judge and a loving father. That's because Jesus did that on the cross. So if we're going to stay focused on discipleship is what we need to do number one on your outline. Keep the gospel primarily primary keep the gospel primary. Do you want discipleship to be the way that Jesus had it the gospel has to be primary. I think it's very clear from everything that he's done. He's coming to proclaim the gospel of God repentance and faith is how you enter through it when you get into the kingdom of God, you're in our disciple to go out and make disciples as an ambassador. The great gospel that is saved you so keep the gospel primary but not what we want to do is say okay, if that's the way that Jesus said, this is discipleship. Is that what Paul was all about that with these new testament Epistles are doing is that how they're telling the church then to design their discipleship and design their programs to make sure that they stay on board with what Jesus is saying I say, yes, and absolutely what I want to do is just give you one to write down and then we're going to go camp in a text. So just write down 1st Corinthians 15 1 211 1st Corinthians 15 1 to 11. And if you know that portion of scripture at all, I think you understand that. This is exactly the heart of the Apostle Paul. Cuz what did he say to the Christmas there I delivered to you what was of first importance that Christ died according to the scriptures that he was buried and that he rose again according to those scriptures and that death burial and Resurrection satisfies the wrath of God and those who put their face in Paul doesn't use the word repentance there, but I think he talks about belief, but you can even see the idea of repentance in there any idea of belief and what it means to respond to the gospel 1st Corinthians 15 1 2 11 the gospels of first importance to Paul in that but I want to camp out in Philippians I do that for a purpose one because again, it shows that the Primacy of the Gospel but to when we started in that tiny little multi-purpose room over there Flippin was the first book that we preached. We appreciate if you want Fuller when I go through every single detail instruction of these parts that we're going to look at in Philippians book in chapter one, you can get the full sermon series back there, but it was so good to watch the Primacy of the Gospel in the book of Philippians it to you earlier. Paul said his ministry was there was you learned from me that that verb for discipleship. So I think it's all the more for idea of finding out what a true disciple is in Philippians 4:9. He said that the Philippians 1 says this is the gospel primary for Paul's Ministry. I told you can check out 1st Corinthians 15, but listen to this and 1st Corinthians, 1:3 I thank my God in all my remembrance of you always and every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer a joy why because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now what a beautiful phrase Paul has such a Unity with the church at Phillipi because they have a partnership in the gospel. That's where we get for Fellowship. Like when people say Fellowship you have fellowship with that person. It's described in the Bible a partnership like going into business with somebody if you if your partner wants to sell Beanie Babies, I don't know why I said Beanie Babies Beanie Babies anymore. Does anybody own a beanie baby? Are you willing to raise your hand? So you all about the future who owns the Beanie Babies will talk afterwards if the rich ones we have some ideas for you expensive one. Theaters and then your partner wants to sell pogs. Remember those things are pogs and Slammers. If you don't know if it's what people who didn't have friends played with like back in the day pogs and Slammers. We had those two things those two things. If one says I'm going to sell Beanie Babies and I want to tell pogs. You can't go together business. Why because you're passionate about two different things. You can't join together in that but Paul in the Church of Philip. I didn't have divided into they had Fellowship in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. That's what brought them together. They're here partnering together because they want to do gospel work because they realize what's been handed down to them from Jesus Christ in this disciple making process is to go proclaim the gospel. Then take a look at what that does to your circumstances in the way that you view them in verse 12 watch it fall where he goes here chapter 1 verse 12. I want you to know brothers that what has happened to me has really serve to advance. The gospel has become known throughout the whole Imperial Guard and to all the rest at my imprisonment is for Christ and most of the brothers. Have you become Confident by my imprisonment are much more bold to speak the word without fear. Do you realize that when the gospel is primary? Not only does it bring this Unity camaraderie this just this passion disfellowshipped to join together in that work, but then it just changes the way you look at everything she over the past months that I've done to this with family members and we're talking I was talking with one of them just on Friday as I was sending this text text and I'm so thankful. It's difficult. Sometimes we don't know why these hard things happened. Why do you go through a difficult time? Sometimes you get an answer? Sometimes you like helping you? Don't get the answer. But what can you always Bank on if you believe in Discipleship you can always think on that whatever is going on. God would want the gospel to advance in that situation and you can always stay even if I don't know why this is going on some how the gospel is going to be a primary and whether my faith is tested and it's made stronger in this or I'm able to preach the gospel to somebody or there's a great Revival that breaks out something is going to advance the gospel because they're called its primary innocence. Hope that it's the passion of you to take a look at all your circumstances good bad, whatever comes and how can this to Danzig also because not only did it happen for Paul who stuck there in prison and you see that throughout the letter the gospels going out to the prison guards at the end of it. He's saying the people in Caesar's household have heard the gospel because I'm in the situation Paul's keeping that primary and what he wants to do speak our self a disciple of Jesus Christ because you believe in the Primacy of the Gospel. What else did you talk about in chapter 1 verse 27? Only let your manner of Life be worthy of the gospel of Christ so that whether I come and see you or an absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit with one mine strike side by side for the face of the Gospel not finding anything by your opponent's this is a clear sign to them of their destruction. But if your salvation and that from God for his be granted to you that for the sake of Christ, you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake and Gage in the same conflict that you saw I had and now here that I still have their do you get the community component in their striping side-by-side? I love that for the faith of the Gospel you're driving side-by-side together so that you were walking together in what Manner a manner worthy of the Gospel becoming like the Savior who saves you Paul is saying the same things with different words here you're going to do that together. What a beautiful phrase Because I get it I've grown up in church. I've been apart of different Ministries that help people accountable and had people hold me accountable and sometimes when you want to talk about somebody's conduct it can get very hard to do that. You can come across as legalistic and come across as being moralistic in that sense. But once we just simply went back to Bible phrases to eliminate that What is instead of saying you know, or are you doing something bad are you doing something that's dishonoured? What you just said is your conduct in a manner worthy of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and just getting back to the standard that Paul has. That's fine. Being a citizen a representative of a state that has put its seal on you like Philip. I had been put on by the Roman government keep on Phillipi should act as if the Roman government is a good government and everything they do is going to shine upon what Rome does we're the same way with the gospel everything we do now shines upon the gospel that we had. We say has saved us store Essex do matter how we obey does matter but not in the census worker earning our Salvation because we said If the Savior who saved us, we just want to make sure that our conduct is worthy of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. So is it primary for Paul? I think you have to say yes. What does the gospel accomplish the same thing that Jesus said it did turn to chapter 3. Philippians book in chapter 3 purses for 211 Keep the gospel primary. What she says put no confidence in the flesh. Why because I have reason to have confidence in the flesh Also if anyone else thinks he has reason or confidence in the flesh is far more circumcised on the 8th day of the people of Israel The Tribe of Benjamin the Hebrews Hebrews after the law a Pharisee s to seal a persecutor of the church as to righteousness under the law blameless, but whatever gain I had I count as loss for the sake of Christ indeed account. Everything is lost because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord for his sake. I've suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish in order that I may gain Christ. Have you found in him not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ the righteousness from God that depends on faith. Does Paul say the gospel accomplish the same thing that Jesus has absolutely because what Paul had before salvation was a list of credentials and good works that he thought established a relationship with God. He thought it was who he was and what he did that made him important blame. Justified in God's eyes. God could justify bringing Paul into the kingdom of God because of who Paul was and what he did. That's what Paul fought his bassist was having a relationship with God, but he soon began to realize that. Got him nowhere. That sounds a lot like the Rich Young Ruler that we talked about it Mark when he came to Jesus. What do I have to have to have eternal life? Keep the Commandments? Why do all those Commandments he have the credentials outside. He did probably those commands probably kept them externally, but God's not just about external obedience. He wants the heart and only the gospel can penetrate to that. Do you think it's a sad reality in the church today that people could think that is their good works that is going to get them into heaven. But good works could never change who you are or the status that you have before your salvation you realize that you're under condemnation because you're a sinner before God Saves you and you have a sinful nature and no amount of Good Works, which you can do as a criminal in God's eyes breaking his law and having a simulation good things can still be done. But none of that changes your status before God, maybe this illustration will help you. I know you guys always want to be kept up with what's going on with Taylor Swift. So sometimes I check on Twitter and stuff like what's going on with you sweat. I want to make sure I know like who she is and what's going on. I'm just kidding. I don't care anything about this.
There was a man who broke into one of Taylor Swift's Beach House issues on vacation broke into there. So the cops were called. So this fan who broke in is a trespasser and breaking and entering so he's 40 criminal in the eyes of the law. The police were called when the alarm went off and they showed up at the house and they showed up to the front door, you know, they saw shoes outside shoes one of these become the house and they find the shooter who broke and entered with no shoes on walking around it said why did you do that? He goes I was taught it was polite to always take your shoes off before you go into someone's innocence applied criminal. Discretion. Is it a is it a flight sing a nice thing a good thing to take your shoes off before you enter someone's home, very kind thing to do. What is a situation that we have with this person doing it and then breaking and entering into the house and trespassing on the property was that kind act do anything to change their status in the Law's eyes? No. That that nice little act that they did would do nothing to it. But imagine just imagine it wasn't just that one good work imagine he broke in and trespassing at all those things but he broke in and he cleaned her entire house and he went on her computer and started a website to get her more followers on Twitter and then he found her tax records did her taxes for it. Did all these good things. Would any of those good works shift his status in the eyes of the law. No. So why do we think that's ever going to happen in the courtroom of God?
Why does somebody think okay. I know I sinned against God but if I do these good work that's going to shift my status. There's no way that that could happen and God still be a just God who looks at a criminal says you did some good. So that's going to eliminate the bad that you've done. You would never accept that if someone broke into your house and stole your stuff, but then they walked an old lady across the street. You would say judge. I don't care about that. Good act. I want you to interact with the law says they broke the law Justice needs to be served and you will look at that law. You would look at that judge as being a very horrible judge if you let him go because you did a couple nice things even though he's broken. The law God is a righteous judge was Psalm 33:5 said he loves righteousness and Justice. God will never compromise on that. after wisdom of the Gospel that he can bring guilty sinners in because the punishment has been paid in the one who never committed any sins to be guilty. So the justice of God is preserved at the mercy of God is passed on that's why the gospel is so amazing and we need to have a primary in all that we do think we saw that in Jesus. I think we see that in Paul. No set the description there verse 6 says as to righteousness under the law. I was blameless literally in the Greek. I became famous because of what I did in the law, but then he says what happens in Salvation is I gained a righteousness that comes from the outside and that's the righteousness of Christ at the credited to my account. So it looks as if I did everything that Jesus ever did and Jesus gets treated as if he did all the wrongs that I ever did not is Amazing Grace and what a gospel needs to be preserved. I told you it's it's 6 G's. It's 6 G's because I find all these and I also this to another wireless world right now. There's 5 G's. I'm hoping to trademark 6 G's before they get to the 6 and then maybe that will make a little money for me on the side like that trademark the 60s and we'll give it all to the church afterwards 60s. First of them is the gospel keep the gospel primary looking at specific. This one is that last aspect of Glory because discipleship is nothing if it doesn't end somewhere glorious. Over the next couple weeks we can talk about some hard things that disciples go through trials tribulations persecutions and is any of that worth it if there's no glory at the end. The gospel is nothing if it just gives us forgiveness and we can enjoy a few more years of not feeling guilty on Earth and then end up what punished in Hell or we just break out into Annihilation. The gospel is nothing then but if it gains you eternal life where you stand in glory and everything that you have ever longed for that has been pure and true that God has put on your heart will be given to you in his presence fullness of joy. That's the gospel. You want to Proclaim. to look at what did Jesus say is important about the end of the Gospel of the glory that we receive go with me to Mark chapter 8 Mark chapter 8
Discipleship if it's not in the glory won't be anything.
Mark chapter 8
Jesus's words in 30 vs. 34 to 38 Mark chapter 8 34 to 38. I'm calling the crowds to him with his disciples. He said to them if anyone would come after me let him deny himself take up his cross and follow me forever would save his life will lose it. But whoever loses his life watch this for my sake and the gospels the gospel primary the Jesus and his disciples ship. Absolutely for what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul for what can a man give in return for his soul for whoever is ashamed of me and my words in the sinful and adulterous generation of him. Will the son of man also be ashamed when he comes watch this in the glory of his father. with the Holy Angels He said to them first chapter 9 verse 1 truly I say to you. There are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God after his come with power. Then we get the Transfiguration and get a glimpse of the glory that there going to be a shirt into when they're taking to be in the kingdom of God when the kingdom of this world becomes a kingdom of our Lord and Jesus the kingdom that were part of Now by grace through faith sets up his shop here on Earth and we enjoy the new heavens and a new Earth. What a glorious place it's going to be. Jesus says you can't be ashamed of him in his gospel for going to partake in that remember chapter 13, we won't have time to make that same argument. You will see the son of man coming and Glory we talked about that the signs of the end time what's going to happen at the end, you know, what's going to be the end when you see the son of man coming in his glory and what's that going to look like in Jesus will say the same thing later on. That ties us back to that passage in Daniel Daniel chapter 7 a dinner chapter 7 is tied to the Great Commission the authority and the end of chapter 7 given to the son of man there. Is the same Authority that's invested into Jesus in The Great Commission. So Jesus who has all authority now send this out to make disciples so that we will get to see that glory and we will long for That Glory might come to get your sweater write this down number to any good disciple and any discipleship is not illegal to keep a gospel primer, but it's going to number too long for the glory of heaven real discipleship going to do that. If not, it's it's fake discipleship. You will give up. If you thought what was that the end wasn't really promise to you.
Because of time does Paul think the same thing. So again, I want to just give you a concert that you can reference later. So you don't think I'm cherry-picking the book of Philippians the right down 1st Corinthians, 15 verses 12258 Paul believe that discipleship is aimed at understanding what God's going to do at the end times in the glory that he's going to bring a transformation that comes 1st Corinthians, 12:15 15 12.50 8 is all about that bass about the work is going to come the Mortal becomes Immortal the perishable becomes imperishable Christ comes enhance the kingdom over to the father at for his honor and glory and because of all that verse 58 is this therefore be steadfast unmovable always abounding in the work of the Lord what the work of discipleship going out making disciples. Special needs 1512 258 return with me to Philippians 3 and see if again this is what Paul would say to the Philippians as he told them. This is what you learn from me all these things. You got to put them into practice. Philippians chapter 3 verses 17 221
Philippians 3:17 21
does this Brothers join and imitating me and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example that you have in us? We'll come back to that for many of whom I've often told you and now tell you with tears walk as enemies of the Cross of Christ. Their end is destruction. Their God is their belly they glory in their shame with their Mind Set On Earthly things, but our citizenship is in heaven and from it. We await a savior the Lord Jesus Christ who will canceling this lowly body to be like his glorious Body by the power that enables even him to subject all things to himself there for my brother's whom I love and long for my joy and Crown stand firm Dustin the Lord my beloved. I want you too long for the glory of Heaven. Yeah, that's going to affect the way that you live right now. Our citizenship is in heaven. Did you notice the contrast that he had with other people though people who walk as enemies of the Cross of Christ? There's some division in the commentators as if these people are are just non-christians or if they were people who were maybe among the the community of the flippy into or not walking as an enemy, they used to profess but now they're walking his enemies of the Cross of Christ. I think it's more that but whatever will you take it Paul still always has a heart for non-believers and he cries with tears in Romans 9 and 10 for them, but I think the people walking as enemies of the Cross of those people who left the gospels race that happened to the galatian church, right you so quickly after I left have abandoned the gospel of grace in your trying to do it by works, but he was talking about earlier on in chapter 3 But he says our citizenship is in heaven is using that same word as walking in a manner worthy. That's the same family group that you would live in such a way that you believe Christ is coming back to transform everything in to give him great honor and glory to be like his glorious body. That's the kingship of Christ the King ship of the Messiah. Don't know how many of you are familiar with things called the sergeant Preston radio show and I remember that happened back in the 1950s, but maybe not many of you were around at that time 1950s any 1955 Sergeant Preston radio show was just an important show is because people used to listen to it. And that's where they used to try to you know, do the most ads that they could for anything is radios real big at the time. So cereal companies were in great competition at this point in time and they wanted to they wanted to get an edge. And so one of them, what was it called Uncle Quaker puffed wheat cereal and Quaker puffed rice cereal said, okay. We're going to come up with a promotion that's going to get people to buy into our cereal. So what they did is they literally sent like one of their lawyers to the Yukon and had him scoped out of land that wasn't owned by anybody and they purchased a plot of land up there in the Yukon and what they did in their packages of cereal with cell little plots of land a square inch big to anyone who bought the cereal. So if you bought the serial you were guaranteed a spot in this land a square inch wide and that, you know, they were talking about that could be gold there that could be all these great things. You just got to buy her sooner. So people were literally going and they were fine like multiple cereal so they could put together a bunch of the Havoc like a plot to go and look at But you know what happened? The people who went and did that didn't take the time to register each individual plot of land and when it came time to pay the property tax didn't pay it. And so they lost rights to the land and everyone had been guaranteed something in the far-off land that was going to be something great to them lost out how devastating that would be. That's not a sin Christianity. We've been given the Holy Spirit as a guarantee. We know Christ is coming back. We await Our Savior who walk this Earth died on the cross rose again 3 days later and he is coming back and we will be in glory with him. That's where we belong to be. I think one of the great ways that we can always make sure the discipleship his name on The Gospel in the glory of Christ is that we do what the Bible says and taking commune with one another so I can have time this morning to take communion and what that does is Justin Memorial. It's a remembrance of what Jesus did for us on the cross. We never look at this. Is it as any sort of selfless act ended in that sense? We are saved by grace through faith. There's no mysterious elements that are going on in these different pieces of bread and grape juice. None of that is that it's just simply remember it's to think about Jesus's body being broken forces blood being spilt in as pulsating feeling is proclaiming the Lord's death until he comes so we're going to have the ushers come forward right now to be going to pass this out and we'll have people play for us. As we take time to reflect on the goodness of God, if you take communion, this is for believers. If you're here is a Christian and you put your faith and trust in Jesus Christ is open to you. If you don't know Jesus just left the elements pass. It's okay. How much is very glad that you're hearing that since you have any questions you can talk to us afterwards, but you guys go ahead passes out.
I was thinking of the parable that Jesus told between the tax collector in the center. Between the braggart and the beggar night was the one who walked away justify the one who begged for God's mercy because they realize that's the only way of Salvation. You never want to BOCES if it's us cuz if we're both students were both sending something false. So what this does is it teaches us that somebody died in our place as the old hymn says in our place condemned he stood so that we could come into the kingdom of God. So I should take the bread and takes a cup do in remembrance of that God's Great salvation.
I'm sure I'll stand with me and we will pray and then will be dismissed to go out and have a great time of Fellowship.
Heavenly father. Thank you so much for the gospel of grace that has saved us. Thank you for the giving of your son for us and God we can come into your presence boldly confidently be a part of your family knowing that the guilt and shame and Punishment of our sin has been taken care of by Jesus Christ God may we be passionate about keeping that primary never making the gospel about our works, but about what Christ did and so God as disciples keep us focused on the mission to go out and proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ helping encouraging one another to do that father. So by Grace father, would you be able to do that? Not just for another 3 years, but as long as you keep us here on this Earth so that the glory of the Gospel is spread in the name of Jesus Christ his praise. We ask all that in your son's wonderful name. Amen.
