Psalm 103:1–2 ESV
Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits,
103:1 - Bless (Hebrew baraka - to bless, to kneel; closely related to the Aramaic brek; meaning to Praise (as in NLT “Let all that is within me praise”)
the LORD (YHWH)
and all (Hebrew kol - the whole; everything;) that is within me
Bless His Holy (Hebrew kodesh - apartness - traditional word) Name (Hebrew shem - name, fame; Aramaic - brand/mark
Translation: Kneel before and praise YHWH - with my everything - Kneel before and praise the Name, the Brand or Mark that is Apart or Holy from all Else (including myself)
103:2 - Similar Statement - Building Synthesis with the first phrase of v. 1
Bless the LORD, O my soul (Kneel before and praise YHWH)
“forget (Hebrew shawkach - forget or ignore - fail to pay attention) not all his benefits (Hebrew gâmuwl - benefit, reward, recompense)
Benefits:
Forgives all your iniquity (v. 3)
Heals all your diseases (v. 3)
Redeems your life from the pit (v. 4)
Crowns you with steadfast love and mercy (v. 4)
Satisfies you with good - leading to renewed vigor (v. 5)
Works righteousness and justice for the oppressed (v. 6)
Reveals His ways (v. 7)
He is merciful and gracious (see v. 4) (v. 8)
He is slow to anger and abounds in steadfast love (v. 8)
He does not strive against us forever (v. 9)
His anger (toward those who love him) does not last forever (v. 9)
He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor bring His full retribution for our iniquities (v. 10)
His love is grand beyond scope toward those who fear Him (v. 11)
He removes our transgressions immeasurably far from us (v. 12)
He is a compassionate Father to those who fear him (v. 13)
He recognizes the true weakness of our makeup (v. 14)
His love is everlasting on the families of those who fear, trust in and obey him (v. 17-19)
Reminder - 103:19
He has established His throne (Hebrew kek - seat of honor, seat of rule) above all else, thus He rules over everything
103:20-22 - All of this leads to the Ascension:
The Angels / Messengers (Hebrew malak - to despatch as a deputy; AV translates as “angel” 111 times, “messenger” 98 times, “ambassadors” four times, ) are to Kneel and Praise the LORD
The hosts (Hebrew tsaba - to fight, to muster, assemble for war, wait to go forth) and servants are to Kneel and Praise the LORD
His Word are to Bless the LORD
The hosts (Hebrew tsaba - to fight, to muster, assemble for war, wait to go forth) and servants are to Bless the LORD
The works (Hebrew maasah - needlework, labor, act of the hands) in every place where He rules (see v. 19) are to Kneel and Praise the LORD
I, personally, am to KNEEL AND PRAISE THE LORD
This act of contrition and utterance of praise keeps the FACT that GOD has done very much “for me” - even lately… close at hand so I do not FORGET!!!
