Hebrews Chapter 1
Jesus is greater than the Prophets
Jesus is greater than the Angels
Jesus holds the universe by the power of His word
Hebrews Chapter 2 ]
Because of the work of Christ, we cannot drift away form the massage of salvation.
Christ is made lower than the angels. - Humility is the picture.. For a great purpose:
He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
Purification: a ceremonial cleansing from defilement or uncleanness by the performance of appropriate rites.
purification (ceremonial) n. — a ceremonial cleansing from defilement or uncleanness by the performance of appropriate rites.
But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.
Christ suffers.... So that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone....
Hebrews 2:
Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham.
Jesus had to be fully human. “Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood.”
Jesus death destroys the one who has the power of death (Satan)
And takeaway the fear of death
Think of death as an eternal separation.
Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.
“He had to be made like his brother in every respect” - For The Purpose
To become merciful and faithful High Priest
OT - Purpose of the High Priest
The office of the high priest was hereditary and was traced from Aaron, the brother of Moses, of the Levite tribe (; ).
The high priest had to be “whole” physically (without any physical defects) and holy in his conduct ().
High priest had special garments.
Hebrew people would go to the high priest in order to know the will of God ().
The high priest had to offer a sin offering not only for the sins of the whole congregation, but also for himself ().
Hebrew people would go to the high priest in order to know the will of God ().
The high priest had to offer a sin offering not only for the sins of the whole congregation, but also for himself ().
In the New Testament, we find a reference to the high priest having the gift of prophecy ().
The high priest had to offer a sin offering not only for the sins of the whole congregation, but also for himself ().
The most important duty of the high priest was to conduct the service on the Day of Atonement, the tenth day of the seventh month of every year. Only he was allowed to enter the Most Holy Place behind the veil to stand before God. Having made a sacrifice for himself and for the people, he then brought the blood into the Holy of Holies and sprinkled it on the mercy seat, God’s “throne” (). He did this to make atonement for himself and the people for all their sins committed during the year just ended ().
Jesus has to be human in order to serve as high priest for humanity. - For the purpose:
Propitiation - To make reconciliation
For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.
Tempted: to be put to the test in order to ascertain the nature of someone, including imperfections, faults, or other qualities.
Jesus was tempted to avoid the suffering that ended in his crucifixion and people are tempted to give up their faith to avoid hardships
Tempted: to be put to the test in order to ascertain the nature of someone, including imperfections, faults, or other qualities.
For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.
to be tested v. — to be put to the test in order to ascertain the nature of someone, including imperfections, faults, or other qualities.
1 John
Jesus is tested to prove his faithfulness.....
Tempted: to be put to the test in order to ascertain the nature of someone, including imperfections, faults, or other qualities.
Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God’s house. For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses—as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself.
“Heavenly calling” - Eternal Salvation
“Who was faithful to him who appointed him”
Jesus is greater than Moses
(For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.) Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, but Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son. And we are his house, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.
Hebrews 3:
Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant
Jesus is faithful over God’s house as a Son (heir)
“And we are his house”
you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in Scripture:
“Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone,
a cornerstone chosen and precious,
and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”
For it stands in Scripture:
“Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone,
a cornerstone chosen and precious,
and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”
This is why we have a Faithful high priest...
