The two fold ministry of the Holy Spirit on earth

the holy spirit has a work on earth and its two parts:
to lift up the name and ministry of Jesus Christ, the son of God, by leading sinners to repentance
to lift up the name and ministry of Jesus Christ by ministering to the personal spiritual needs of christians and empowering their service
the holy spirit never lifts up nor magnifies himself.
and this is the error of many charismatic fringe groups of “christianity”
these groups openly and directly lift up and magnify the holy spirit in such a way that is mistakenly places christ in a secondary position

ways the Holy Spirit ministers through christians:

its not a simple thing to understand how the holy spirit has influence in the lives of christians...
but i have compiled a few ways that he does… but this is no way an exhaustive list because we shouldn’t and couldn’t put the holy spirit into a box of yes and no
The peace that dwells in them and gives them peace in their heart ( ; )
Romans 8:11 KJV 1900
But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
romans
John 14:27 KJV 1900
Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
the indwelling of the holy spirit or the “filling” of the holy spirit or the “anointing” of the holy spirit
the indwelling is the spirit taking residency in your heart and life and that happens the moment of salvation...
and what comes with that is a peace that can’t be put into words....that doesn’t mean you wont have times of no peace or times of struggle it means you will have the ability to have peace through christ
the Spirit teaches us what they need to know and brings to memory what we need to remember (;)
John 14:26 KJV 1900
But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
this is something that we need to understand here… when we read the bible the holy spirit opens up the meaning of doctrines and things we normally wouldn’t understand
doctrines and truths that man views as foolish but the holy spirit will open our hearts and minds to the truth of them
the lost who don’t have the spirit won’t get the bible the way a believer will
and the holy spirit will also show us truths we need individually in our study of the bible
the holy spirit will also bring to remembrance the truth he has previously shown us
when we are tempted or when we are talking to others about christ he will being to our remembrance what we need as we need it if we are open to his leading
and here it is how do we know its the holy spirit leading us to this or that… thats somehting i can’t explain, but the truth is when you have it and when you see it you know
the Holy Spirit is our source of spiritual power and its what anoints us to do God’s work (; ; )
Acts 1:8 KJV 1900
But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
Matthew 10:19 KJV 1900
But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak.
if we try to do the work of god in the flesh then we will reap poor results or fleshly results...
and people do it all the time… look at this situation or that one and you will see church after church or ministry after minsirty who are failing, or who are not spiritual but instead fleshly
sometimes god wants churches to close… and when they don’t they flounder and suffer and fail when they could have followed after god and just closed
sometimes men decide they can do a work and follow after their flesh and what happens is they either fall into more fleshy things or they fail and blame god
but how do we know whats going on?
without the power of the holy spirit our work will only look good sound good and maybe even feel good, but it wont bring forth spiritual fruit
Romans 8:8–9 KJV 1900
So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
romans

that brings us to the fruits of the Spirit (; ; )

the Indwelling of the Holy Spirit changes us and manifest himself through us in a way that doesn not come natural to us and thats called the Fruit of the Spirit
look god cant use the “real you” because the real you has flaws that makes us useless to god because that flaw takes control of us
by nature we are self centered and desire all the attention and recognition...
by nature we think we are always right and never wrong and we also think very highly of ourselves and honestly more highly than we should
by nature we want power authority ad respect… and these are the reasons why god cannot use us the way we are
he has to change us on the inside before he can use us or before we can glorify god
he changes us through the indwelling of the holy spirit and the manifestations of these changes are called the fruit of the spirit
Galatians 5:22–23 KJV 1900
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

Love:

this love is unconditional, indestructible and cannot fade at all… it means no matter what someone does you love people enough to do what it takes to give them the gospel

joy:

joy isn’t happiness because happiness depends on external circumstances being favorable… but joy has no bases in material things or stuff it all is based on spiritual joy that only comes from the Holy Spirit
Joy comes from knowing God is on the throne and no matter what is going on you’re ok… it rises above circumstances...

Peace:

peace is similar to joy but the two are separate… joy is knowing god is in control and it will be ok; peace is a sense of relief, rest, and security that comes when we know we are saved and we know what the further holds for us

Long suffering:

basically this is a word that means patience or not easily angered

Gentleness:

or being gracious, tenderhearted, kindness adn easy to deal with

Goodness:

it means we have the ability to carry out good works because we have been changed from the inside out
the influence of Goodness isn’t found in materialism or power its the pleasure of being able to do the work of god
Ephesians 2:10 KJV 1900
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

Faith:

it means to be faithful and trustworthy
Proverbs 20:6 KJV 1900
Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: But a faithful man who can find?
provebs 20:6

Temperance:

we don’t slide from one side to another but we are balanced and able to not be extremist on one side or the other
now understand just because someone is saved it doesn’t mean they will have all these qualities all the time.. we will never be perfect but we should have evidences of these qualities in our lives
not only does the holy spirit change us but it goes on to work in our lives other ways
the Holy Spirit gives us our spiritual giftedness ()
1 Corinthians 12:1–11 KJV 1900
Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant. Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led. Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.
1 Corinthians 2:1–11 KJV 1900
And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought: But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory: Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.
the word “severally” tells us that we have all been given more then one gift to use for the glory of god...
most of the christians we meet don’t use their giftedness at all to serve god, but if we are honest are we susing all of our giftedness to serve God?
The Spirit shows the sin in our lives and brings us under conviction ( ; ; )
John 16:8 KJV 1900
And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
this assumes that you have the right spirit towards spiritual changes because most of christianity today wont admit their convicted and wont change if they are convicted
most people today wont see truth because their so stuck in their sin and hard necked about truth they stay away from good preaching or holy spirit conviction and when they encounter it they run quickly back to whats comfortable
Psalm 51:10 KJV 1900
Create in me a clean heart, O God; And renew a right spirit within me.
when we truly want to have a clean heart and a right spirit and ask god ot change us what happens will be heartbreaking to you because the truth of your sin will come to light
and when we are shown the truth of our sin and we repent god works and brings us closer to him, but when we rebell furhter form truth to follow after our sin what we are doing is making our heart harder to truth
Romans 12:1–2 KJV 1900
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
there are 4 outward avenues the spirit uses to convict of sin: preaching, teaching, bible study, and prayer… on occasion circumstances might be used by the holy spirit, but these are the 4 historic ways the holy spirit has used to convict the hearts of men
the Spirit shows God’s “calling” on their life (,)
Acts 13:2–3 KJV 1900
As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.
Acts 12:2 KJV 1900
And he killed James the brother of John with the sword.
Acts 13:2–4 KJV 1900
As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away. So they, being sent forth by the Holy Ghost, departed unto Seleucia; and from thence they sailed to Cyprus.
your pastor can’t tell you the calling of god on your life…
now as a pastor i can see where some people are gifted and i can recommend them to serve god in this capacity or that
but in no situation does another person have the ability to see where god wants you and no one has the ability to tell you where the lord wants you....
in recent year the story of pastoral authority in this one situation has been huge because so many pastors don’t want to lose people or don’t want to have anyone in authority in “their churches”
the Spirit both directs and forbids certain things ()
Acts 16:6–7 KJV 1900
Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia, After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not.
what does that mean: it means when someone is open to the leading of the holy spirit the holy spirit will guide them in what they do
example sometimes i get asked to preach or speak in certain places and i rely on the holy spirt to tell me if i should or not
when i am looking at the church and i am praying for direction for our church i have to rely on the holy spirit for direction
the Spirit make intercession for us ()
Romans 8:26–27 KJV 1900
Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
this was discussed heavily last week...
The Spirit Guides us to truth in all matters ()
John 16:13–15 KJV 1900
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
think however you want but the truth is hidden from the unbeliever because they don’t have the spirit to show them truth
this is why the bible makes sense to the believer
2 Corinthians 4:3 KJV 1900
But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:
its also the holy spirit that shows us the truth that we need a savior because we are sinners
we can’t get saved because we don’t wanna go to hell we can only get saved once we see that we are sinners and we will never see that on our own because our nature tells us we are good because our nature lies to us about us
take that how you want but you wont show you your a sinner we need the working of the holy spirit to show us the truth that we are sinners and need a savior
the Sp
so what is the ministry of the Holy Spirit on earth?
to lift up the name of Christ and bring sinners to repentance
and to life up the name of Christ by ministering to and through believers
