Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned—(For until the law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come. But the free gift is not like the offense. For if by the one man’s offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many. And the gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned. For the judgment which came from one offense resulted in condemnation, but the free gift which came from many offenses resulted in justification. For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.)
Therefore, as through one man’s offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man’s righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life. For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous.
Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more, so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
The Doctrine of Original Sin
Phil Johnson, session 5
Shepherds Conference 2020
Adam’ sin corrupted the entire hummanity
you are not a sinner because you sin...
you sin because you are a sinner
this passage affirms the unity of the human race
humanity is a single rase
Need the doctrine of original sin to understand all sin and salvation
sin is an expression of an innate rebellion against God
sin is the transgression of God’s law
every non-Christian worldview has a twisted hamartaology
many say it is the environment that causes one to sin...
don’t forget that original sin arrived by those in a perfect environment
- Christ’s righteousness is imputed to us
How can God hold me guilty to sin?...
better how can God hold Christ as payment for sin?
analogy between Adam and Christ
the means by which Adam’s sin comes to us, is the same as how Christs righteousness comes to us
Comparison between Adam and Christ...
both filled a similar type of headship
each stand in a type of headship
-Adam represents those in Adam
-Christ represents those in Christ
- Christ as the Last Adam
Adam was a living picture of Christ
one view is that we are biologic offspring of Adam
- the argument for seminal-headship (also the wrong view)
-why this one sin(eve sinned first)
-we would be piling up guilt and be more guilty with every generation
-quilt must not transfer biologically
-since there is no parallel seminal-headship with Christ, there cannot be payment for physical sin, only spiritual sin
Second view: Representative Headship
Adam was given a test (forbidden fruit in the garden)
-he would have been the best one available to take the test
--he could do anything but eat of that fruit (the easiest test possible)
-Adam acted as our representative head, therefore his sin is our sin
sin and death fall to all because of what Adam did
v 18 - as one act led to the fall of all, one act of mercy brings justification for all
