The Meaning of Salvation

In this lesson we are going to cover the subjects of the perfect world, sin, death, the sacrifice, and how to become a new creation through faith in Jesus Christ.
Genesis can be defined as “beginning’ or ‘origin’. The first nine chapters of the book of Genesis gives us a summary of the entire Bible. It starts with the beginning of the universe and God’s perfect creation and continues through the origin of man’s fall, God’s plan of salvation and the renewal of man. The entire story of the Bible can be summed up in these nine chapters.

In this passage we see that God created the heavens and the earth. What does this say about God, who He is and His existence?
Who created the heavens and the earth?
God was before the creation of the universe. He is outside the universe, He is the designer of the universe. It establishes God’s Sovereignty over all he created. He was from the beginning.

After God creates the heaven and the earth we see the Spirit of God moving over the surface of the waters. This would have been the waters of the earth. The ‘earth was formless and void’ is speaking of the earth having no purpose or plan at that time. There are multiple theories of the time and nature of the earth at this time but that is a subject for another time. Notice God’s interaction with the creation of the earth. Notice that darkness was covering the surface of the deep. God extinguishes the darkness by saying “Let there be light” Light will always overcome darkness and darkness can never extinguish the light. Consider a dark room. You can’t see anything, yet once a match is lite, all attention is directed toward the light. This is the power and attractiveness of God. Once man knows the truth, he cannot deny it’s influence.

What does John say about the Light?
God is light and in Him is no darkness. God cannot be be influenced by darkness.
What does John say about fellowship with darkness?
We lie and do not practice the truth
What is the advantage of walking in the Light?
We have fellowship with one another and the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin.
Read Genesis 1:2-2:3
How many times does God say his creation was ‘good’ and how many times does God say his creation was ‘bad’ in these verses?
Seven times God calls his creation ‘good’ . He never called anything about His creation ‘bad’
Notice there is a distinct order of things. God could have created everything in one moment yet He took six days and rested on the seventh. This was for man’s benefit. This is where we get a six day workweek and a day of rest on the seventh.
Mark 2:27–28 NASB95
Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. “So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”
Jesus Christ is Lord of the Sabbath. The Sabbath is the seventh day of the week also known as Saturday. It is a day of rest of rest for man. Since Jesus is ‘Lord of the Sabbath’ this tells us he is the one who gives us rest (see also ). Now in our society many have to work on Saturday. The principle here is one day each week is devoted to rest as far as literally and spiritually, we as believers learn to rest in Jesus who is Lord of the Sabbath.

What does this passage say about man?
God decided to make man in the image of God, likeness of God. This does not make man God. Man was created to rule over God’s creation. God made male and female. Man was created, not evolved.
So we see that all God created was good and perfect. We see that man was created in the image of God and we see that God is the giver of rest.
