James 2:20–26 KJV 1900
20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? 22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? 23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. 24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only. 25 Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way? 26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

James 2:20 KJV 1900
20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?
2ames 2:20
James 2:20 CSB
20 Senseless person! Are you willing to learn that faith without works is useless?
James states that that the idea of works divorced from faith is absolutly sensless. calling the one who believes this a senceless person
This is directed tward the person who claims to have faith but can not show it by works
Works do not save but they prove salvations power

II. Abrahm’s Faith (21-24)

James 2:21–24 KJV 1900
21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? 22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? 23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. 24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.
James here says that Abrham was Justified by works in sacrificing Isiac.

Romans 4:2–3 KJV 1900
2 For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God. 3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.

Paul
He was speeking about Abrahm being made right with God because he had faith, not because of What he did. Abraham’s real faith was proven real by what he did .
Although Abrahm did not actually take Isaac’s life, he was prepared to do so because he had faith in God. His actions proved his faith in God.
Paul was saying he came into a relationship with God by faith, james is saying that the faith relationship Abrahm had with God was proved genuine by his works.
Paul and James had different purposes behing their use of the word “Justify” Thefore Abrahm’s faith was proven genuine by his action. The scripture was fufilled by what he did
When paul speaks of Abrham, he is quoteing which happends before Abrahm is called to sacrifice his son Isaac. It even happends before abrahm and his sons are circumcised. Paul is saying that Abrahm was made right with God not by what he did, but by belief and faith

James
James is saying that Abrahm’s faith is demonstrated, it is proved genuine, his faith is Justified when he actually demonstrates belief and faith in God. by being willing to sacrifice his son. James says his faith was made complete! it was real! it was genuine
Paul and James had different purposes behind their use of the word “Justify” Thefore Abrahm’s faith was proven genuine by his action. The scripture was fufilled by what he did
There is Reason to believe that James’s use of the word Justify is diffrent than paul’s Paul uses it as a leagle term “being declard rightious”
This passage is showing a vindication or proof of Abrahms faith.

James and paul simply come to the issue of faith and works from different standpoints, they do not contradict each other the lesson here is genuine justification wll be folowed by justification by vendication.
This passage is shoing a vindication or proof of Abrahms faith.
This does not change the meaning of Justification (Declared Richous) once saved always saved
James and paul simply come to the issue of fait and works from different standpoints, they do not contradict each other the lessene here is genuine justification wll be folowed by justification by vendication.
James’s use of the word Justify in the sence of vendicate is further seen further in the passage
James 2:22 ESV
22 You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by his works;
James 2:22–23 KJV 1900
22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? 23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.
notice what the text says...Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”—and he was called a friend of God.”
James begins a conclusion by giving a discussion of genuine saving faith.
James 2:24 KJV 1900
24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.
This again is not contridicting justification through faith alone, but rather that true faith will be accompinied by works. Works prove our faith is genuine.

III. Rahab’s Faith (25)

III. Rahab’s Faith (25)
James 2:25 KJV 1900
25 Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?
James here refrences Rahab a hero of the faith, who occupies a place in the faith hall of fame in James here includes her along with Abrahm as an example
Abrahm is the man who God first personally appeared and he is characterized by tremendous faith at crucial points of his life but he was no stranger to lapses of faith. He is the great friend of God

Rahab on the other hand was a prostitute in a pagon socioty. and never had the benifit of a personal apperance of God. Rather She came to faith by hearing of Isriel’s great conquests by God’s power. Rahbs faith was thus justified by her couragous desission flowed out of her justifying faith.

IV. Dead faith (26)

James 2:26 KJV 1900
26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
James concludes with a reminder that just as the body is dead with no spirit, so also is faith usless without works.
THis adds an intrsting aspect, medicine has for years been trying to determine when the point of death is. here it states that point is when the soul leaves the body.
