Bible Study:

Psalm 119:9 NLT
How can a young person stay pure? By obeying your word.
To you, what does it mean to “stay pure?”
Let’s look at what God says. The 10 Commandments are not just religious rules. They are a list of ways people can have a relationship with God. God is pure, so He needs His people to be pure.

Commandment #1:

Exodus 20:3 NLT
“You must not have any other god but me.
Ex 20:1
The first commandment is to worship God only. Worship involves a lot of things, but one way to worship is to love. Are there things in your life that you love more than God? (Don’t just think about what’d you say, but what do your actions prove?)

Commandment #5”

Exodus 20:12 NLT
“Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the Lord your God is giving you.
Ex
Do you honor your mother and father? Do you treat them with respect? How do you respond to them when they ask you to do something?

Commandment #6

Exodus 20:13 NLT
“You must not murder.
Ex 20
Hopefully, none of you are guilty of this, especially at your age! Or, maybe not...
Look what Jesus said...
Matthew 5:21 ESV
“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’
Matthew 5:21–22 NLT
“You have heard that our ancestors were told, ‘You must not murder. If you commit murder, you are subject to judgment.’ But I say, if you are even angry with someone, you are subject to judgment! If you call someone an idiot, you are in danger of being brought before the court. And if you curse someone, you are in danger of the fires of hell.
Who’s guilty now?
That’s only 3 commandments! Does anyone need help “staying pure?” Well, how do we begin to live pure lives? What does the verse say?
Read another verse that’s written a little later...
Psalm 119:11 NLT
I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
Ps 119:
What does it mean to “hide” God’s word in our heart?
How can we begin to do that?
Go back to verse 9. Is it enough to just “hide” or “know” God’s word? What does it say we need to do?

Homework:

Pick a verse above and “hide” or “memorize” the verse.
Pick one of the “commandments” above and do your best to stay “pure” in this area.
