Notes
Transcript
1 John 2:15 CSB
Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
2.15 — The setup...
John 3:16 CSB
For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.
Same words for… [oh, and same author, too!]
Love — ἀγαπάω (verb form)
World — κόσμος (noun) [usages: created order (; ; ); of people (; ); system of power/world view (; ; )
What do we do? [What do we need to remember?]
Context is key! [even with a word like anything…; this is why I am not a fan of translations/paraphrases like Amplified]
What is the danger? [if your primary care/love is of the world, then the love of the Father is not in you]
2.16 — The contents...
Further context = “everything in the world” [helps determine definition of world in this passage]
Genesis 3:6 CSB
The woman saw that the tree was good for food and delightful to look at, and that it was desirable for obtaining wisdom. So she took some of its fruit and ate it; she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.
gen 3.
Lust (ἐπιθυμία; craving, desire, longing, yearning) of the Flesh —
“the tree was good for food”; base nature/sinful nature; even good longings given wrong priority/means to satisfy
Lust “ of the Eyes —
“delightful to look at”;
Pride (ἀλαζονεία; false pride, pretentiousness, ) in one’s possessions —
“it was desirable for obtaining wisdom”;
We are not sinful because we sin. We sin because we are sinful.
2.17 — The endurance/duration...
World is passing away… [παράγω: vanishes, leaves; political agendas included]
The one who does the will of God remains forever! [μένω: persists, endures; no matter gender, age, ethnicity, economic status, health…]
