Christ’s Example in Prayer (v. 1)

The Lord’s habit was to pray. He communed with the Father constantly.
At the beginning of His ministry.
Luke 3:21 ESV
Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heavens were opened,
Luke 3:21–22 NKJV
When all the people were baptized, it came to pass that Jesus also was baptized; and while He prayed, the heaven was opened. And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.”
He would retreat in prayer.
Luke 5:16 NKJV
So He Himself often withdrew into the wilderness and prayed.
He persisted in prayer, and sought the Father before calling his disciples.
Luke 6:12–13 NKJV
Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God. And when it was day, He called His disciples to Himself; and from them He chose twelve whom He also named apostles:
Luke 9:18 NKJV
And it happened, as He was alone praying, that His disciples joined Him, and He asked them, saying, “Who do the crowds say that I am?”
Luke 9:28 NKJV
Now it came to pass, about eight days after these sayings, that He took Peter, John, and James and went up on the mountain to pray.
Jesus’s pattern of prayer led his disciples to ask Him to teach them.
This is the heart of a follower of Christ. We come understanding that we need to be taught by Him. We come recognizing that we do not know how to pray as we ought. We come to the Master of prayer.

The Majesty of God.
Psalm 8:1–2 NKJV
O Lord, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth, Who have set Your glory above the heavens! Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have ordained strength, Because of Your enemies, That You may silence the enemy and the avenger.
The Provision of God
Psalm 65:9–11 NKJV
You visit the earth and water it, You greatly enrich it; The river of God is full of water; You provide their grain, For so You have prepared it. You water its ridges abundantly, You settle its furrows; You make it soft with showers, You bless its growth. You crown the year with Your goodness, And Your paths drip with abundance.
Psalm 65:9-
R - Request (Give us this day)
Philippians 4:6–7 NKJV
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
A - Acknowledge (Forgive us our sins)
and . We must acknowledge our own sin before the Lord, but we also need to forgive others of their sin against us.
Y - Yield (Lead us not into temptation … but deliver us)
Romans 12:1–2 ESV
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Our Expectation in Prayer (vv. 5-13)

The audacity of prayer.
Pray expecting to be heard by your Father.
The parable of the shameless neighbor.
Ask, seek and knock.
Pray expecting to receive from your Father every good gift.
The nature of the Father.
